Press L right before you hit the ground. It just takes practice and time in the lab grinding it out until you get it.

Try L-Cancelling Dairs. It's really easy to tell when you missed it and when you got it.

There's no secret to it, just practice practice practice!

I'm sure that to be 100% certain of your L-cancels, you could change time speeds on training mode.

If you're completely new to L-cancelling, try Link's dair, Bowser's bair, or Ganon's dair to notice the difference.

I think Leffen has gone on record saying that he practiced L-cancelling on a ton of ice climbers - if it's harder than normal in practice, you'll be less likely to mess up when it counts.

If you have a Wii you can try the 20XX pack (I'd link but I'm too new to smashboards). One of the options is to make you flash white when you L-cancel or red when you miss one.

You can also reduce the number of frames that it's possible to L-cancel on. If you get good at it with a 4 frame window, then (in theory) you'll be nearly twice as good with a 7 frame window.

I'm usually fine with my Falco L cancels... except against shields. I definitely need to work on that since shield pressure is apparently Falco's forte.

If you keep practicing soon you won't have to think about l-canceling you'll just do it. Just practice as much as possible

All I can really tell you is to watch your character and keep it in mind. Soon it becomes muscle memory and as soon as your character is about to hit the ground (whether you hit a shield or not) you will know. Good luck!
