I Got 64 Problems But A Flaoc Ain't One
#2: The Maddening

(Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/244938389023701/)

Well, well, well... What have we here, boys and girls? Last time, at A&C World, we ran an experimental tournament... an experiment gone extremely right. A revival of sorts, the first of a local series, an event to smash down the barriers of mismatched controllers, an event to gauge interest for an assumedly small community that was truly anything but. 3 events, 9 hours, fierce competition, the start of something amazing...

Smash 64, if our numbers stay as good as they did at our launch, will attempt to join the ranks of Melee, Brawl, and Project M with Saturday tournaments, longer hours, monthly events, and bigger payouts.

It's time to step up our game. It's time to up the ante. It's time to put on a Maddening show.

Information
Who: You!
What: SMASH 64!
Where: A&C World, 702A Spadina Ave (west side of Spadina, south of Bloor St)
http://acgamesonline.com/world/
When: Saturday June 28, 2014 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Why: 27 entrants at our first event. That was awesome. And we hope to do even better. Here's 2 months to plan ahead, set the date aside, bust out your controllers and practice up.
How: by giving us your money again

Venue fee: $5
Smash 64 Singles: $10 (60-30-10 payout)
Smash 64 Doubles: $5 per person ($10 per team) (60-30-10 payout)
Side Event: $2 per person (Winner Takes All)

Schedule (TENTATIVE)
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Registration + Friendlies (DO NOT BE LATE!)
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM All Events Begin
3:00 PM - 3:45 PM Scheduled Lunch Break (DQ-free grace period)
3:45 PM - 10:00 PM All Events Continue

This schedule WILL CHANGE if we get more than 32 entrants, in which case we will be doing ROUND ROBIN POOLS for singles, as well as an AMATEUR BRACKET.

Setup Info
We will have:
  • multiple N64 setups (NTSC console + cart)
  • two USB-to-N64 adapters for USB-powered controllers
    • two Raphnet Gamecube-to-USB adapters (works laglessly with the USB-to-N64 device)
    • two Raphnet Classic-Controller-to-USB adapters (works laglessly with the USB-to-N64 device)

Netplay keyboard warriors and VC recruits are encouraged to come out! No matter how you like to play, we got you covered.

Please bring cartridges. CRT TVs and N64s are provided by the venue (is that awesome or what, am i right?).

Current count:
-2 full N64 setups

Gameplay Rules
~~~~~~~~PLEASE VOTE ON YOUR PREFERRED STAGELIST!~~~~~~~~
Due to overwhelming popular demand, Hyrule Castle is returning! It will be a counterpick at this tournament.
Basic rules:
  • Starter: Dream Land
  • Counterpicks: Kongo Jungle, Peach's Castle, Hyrule Castle
  • 5 stock
  • No Items
  • Double Elimination, Best of 3 (WF, LF, and GF all Best of 5)
  • Gentleman's Rule is in effect: Any other stage may be used if both players agree to it.
  • Loser picks next stage
  • If a player pauses mid-match, the opponent has the right to force the pauser to forfeit a stock or restart the match with a one-stock difference.
  • Players may request that Dark DK, Dark Samus, and Dark Captain Falcon not be used on Kongo Jungle, but must do so before any damage is dealt that game.
  • Two players who require the USB adapters for their controller may NOT team with each other in doubles, unless they are the only USB users in the bracket. This is because there are only two adapters in total, and if 3 USB users end up needing to be in the same match, we'd be screwed.
    • It would cost me $500 to build 2 more adapters to make this rule obsolete... i am accepting donations ;)
Side Event - Super Sudden Death:
  • Brawl
  • Double Elimination, best of 3
  • Random Character (with ZSS inclusion code enabled)
  • All items OFF, NONE
  • Apex 2013 stage list and striking procedure
  • Super Sudden Death mode
  • 8 Stocks, no time limit
Other Rules
  • Players should take no longer than 10 minutes to report to their match when announced. If you leave the venue during bracket time you risk being DQed, and we really don't want to do that! (Exception: No player will be DQed for lateness during the scheduled lunch break.)
  • If you like, feel free to leave us your mobile number and pidgezero_one will text you if you're up for a set and we cannot find you.
  • IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE TO REGISTRATION, PLEASE TEXT ME AT 416 520 0548. I not going to run registration as late as last time, but we get that sometimes **** happens and if you let us know ahead of time I can put you in the bracket.
  • Match priority: 64 > Side event > MMs = Friendlies
  • Please try to bring your own controllers as extras are not guaranteed. If you use a controller other than a N64 controller, gamecube controller, classic controller, or keyboard, you are responsible for bringing any needed devices to make your controller compatible with USB.
Stream Info
We will have one stream setup which will be broadcast to http://www.twitch.tv/acgamesonline
Smash 64 is the main event
and will be the focus of the stream. Side events will be streamed only if there are matches remaining and 64 Grand Finals is over.
Food
Lick's, Smoke's, Subway, Pizza Pizza, Greg's Ice Cream, hot dogs, swiss chalet, noodle bowl, to name a few
(Food map coming soon... maybe i will actually do it this time)
---------
Our side events are unorthodox rulesets from other smash games, to encourage more adventurous Melee and Brawl players to attend and hopefully expand the offline 64 community.
What if I don't happen to have an N64 controller, and the person I'm playing against wins the Rock-Paper-Scissors. Sorry, new to all of this.
This was not a problem at the last tournament because all of our contestants agreed to accommodate people with different controllers when faced with the decision, but in that case the opponent would decide what setup to use and both players would have to use controllers compatible with that setup. (Spare n64 controllers are available)
I don't expect this to be an issue but it's mostly there to cover our bases :)
Ahh thank you! That's good to know, should I bring my own adapter for PC as well then.
It's not a bad idea - what kind of controller do you use? If you use N64 or Gamecube, we'll be supplying some, but bringing your own is always encouraged.
I use a Gamecube controller, it just helps me to use one controller for the whole series so I can set the buttons accordingly. That way I still kinda of play with a similar config throughout the games.
Cool, well I usually bring an adapter that works with Armen's laptop, but it's best to bring your own too. Never hurts to have a bunch :) I think we will have one other GC user coming as well.
Also! I do plan on building two of these, as well as procuring two Raphnet adapters each for gamecube and wiimote: http://smashboards.com/threads/n64-usb-adapter-3-0.345733/
However I do not think I'll have them done before june 28th, but if I can get these working then we will never have a setup dispute to worry about in the future :)
Modified Apex 2014 seems to be most popular so far.
Tomorrow I begin procuring materials to build adapters so we can all play on N64s.
I think there's a decent chance I attend and bring a friend (possibly two).
we could also bring a console/cart, maybe a console/cart each if needed.
lastly, I would prefer if hyrule were legal, even if it was a counterpick stage.
So the overwhelming majority voted to add Hyrule as a counterpick, looks like that'll be the ruleset.
ALSO BIG NEWS!!! THE USB ADAPTERS WILL BE DONE IN TIME!!! Keyboard and GCC users, you guys can now play on a console!
Due to overwhelming popular demand, Hyrule Castle is returning as a legal stage!
At this tournament, Hyrule is available as a counterpick.
I'm in Asia on an internship for the next 5 months so I can't make this or any other events for the next little while. But I'm looking forward to watching the streams and I expect a Flaoc #7 when I come back. I still want my revenge on you @ B Link B Link :p
special announcement:
THE USB ADAPTERS ARE WORKING!
This means that all matches will be played on a nintendo 64.
Shoutouts to Karajan for walking me through the process. And shoutouts to MasterDalK for making us a stream layout.
hey guys!
So a bit of a hype announcement and change of plans: Ottawa is coming to this tournament! But they are having some unexpected car troubles. Registration will be running later than planned to make sure they can get in on the bracket too.
See you soon!
Will be attending!
Can't wait to meet all of you :)
Likewise! :)
