Put me down as a possibility. I'm not sure I'll be available tomorrow, play wise. Otherwise, disregard this.

I want to come to next sundays tournament, and I know I will be free, so sign me up. I have been wanting to go to a tournament for a while but i live in Sudbury Ontario, not a gaming place... so I have signed up here to see what the competative players are like, I just hope I can handle my own against you guys. I have only played computers really...

It's really just a matter of attendance. Could be the time of year and summer may bring more activity. What I think I'll do for now is finish off this season and not worry about attendance, so basically we'll do the tourney on the date it's meant to be done even if there's only like 4 people.

Once this season is over it should be close to summer time and we can start the new secondary character gimmick that may attract more attendance as well. It'll add some more flavor anyways, I think nothing but Ike dittos every two weeks is starting to get stale for the long-time participants.

Good point, so will it be some peoples secondary vs. other guys Ike, or will you both be Ike or secondary (my secondaries are Falco and Marth... not sure if that means much though) and I will be there. How does this work anyway, I have only once been to a tournament and it was in person?

Massive necrobump of great justice. Please read.

Okay so here's the deal. It's the first day of a new month getting closer to summer, most (if not all) people who attend university are finished with exams by now, and it has been so long since I did anything about these bi-weeklies that my last post here is done in my old font color and Nidoking sign-off.

We had some cool ideas for these at the time (incorporating secondary characters, I had just started recording much more statistics, etc...) but for whatever reason I procrastinated this for such a long time that it got out of hand and I didn't think it was worth trying again.

However...

Recently our activity in the Ike boards is not bad but it is limited to a select few members and conversation has been mainly about Fire Emblem and other games. Not necessarily a bad thing, since it is in the social thread, but I'd like us to be thinking more about the character in the specific game we all started posting here to discuss.

The point: I want to start up the bi-weeklies again, but obviously I can't do it on my own.

My reasons for wanting to start the bi-weeklies again are threefold:

1. The heightened sense of community it provided. Regardless of how annoying WiFi can be at times, it was mainly about playing smash with the people we've gotten to know through the forum for months or even years and having it be both enjoyable and moderately competitive at the same time. And we all know it was a fun time to hang out in the XAT. The bi-weeklies brought us all together at least every two weeks, brought in new members who would likely not have otherwise ever posted here, and in my opinion it was beneficial for both experienced and inexperienced players in different ways.

2. Activity in other areas of the board could use a boost. We need to finish the guide for example. The video critique thread could use more videos to critique, although there was a spark there a little while back it's been generally inactive for a long time. Almost two years ago now, it was the momentum from these bi-weeklies that spurred us to start and work on the guide, so maybe they can help us to finally finish it.

3. I need something to do that's constructive now that school is out for four months, and we need something to do as a community aside from just off-topic conversing. Maybe it's just me but I feel like we've sort of lost touch with the fact that we all originally started posting in this board because we enjoyed playing smash as Ike (probably, guess I can't really speak for everyone there).

I just realized those reason are all very similar, but that's not a bad thing.

Anyways, here is my plan for how this is going to go down:

- You guys post your thoughts and opinions on restarting the bi-weeklies here; if there is an overwhelmingly negative response I guess I'll drop the idea and we'll go back to doing nothing but chatting about other video games.
- If many of you like the idea of starting these up again, we have to decide as a group whether it's worth continuing the current Season 3 after more than a year, or scrapping it and starting a fresh Season 3, potentially with the new idea for secondary characters incorporated.
- I will set a date for the first new tournament (likely two weeks from now, but maybe this weekend if there is enough interest immediately) and send out a friendly PM to anyone and everyone who has ever participated in a bi-weekly linking them to this thread as well as the XAT.

The bi-weeklies would still be Sunday at the same time, because that worked very well for most people before and I see no reason why that will have changed now. If it has changed considerably, obviously a new day and time can be agreed upon.

I will still be running the bi-weeklies and keeping track of stats and everything on my own (unless anyone wants to volunteer to help with that stuff, I'm not opposed to that at all), and we can either stick with the PR panel we currently have or vote on a new one if the activity level of the current panelists will be an issue.

Anyways, other things can wait until I get some input from you guys. I've asked Xiivi to remove the poll from the thread so I can set one up with a simple Yes or No for restarting the bi-weeklies, so feel free to wait for that to provide your response if you want.

Question: Would you like to see the bi-weeklies start up again? Poll is up!

Go for it. I basically just put that option in for if you're on the fence or have conditions you'd like to be met if we start it up again or something. As for hating WiFi, it would obviously just be once every two weeks, plus there's always the option to stop playing early (or abstain from playing entirely) and just hang out in the XAT.

We could make it much more tolerable by all purchasing USB ethernet adapters instead of wireless, lol.

Yah that's actually the main reason I've been feeling so guilty about this for a long time. I stopped running the tournaments just shortly after we had a lot of newcomers start participating.

Yes I want these back just for the sake of hanging out (and lulzy doubles after).
And that's the perfect attitude to have for these. The actual tournaments are mainly for fun and to give newer players some experience while allowing the veteran players to critique them by playing them rather than just watching videos. The power rankings and stats are to keep it competitive so players are still motivated to give it their all even though it's WiFi. The overall goal of the bi-weeklies in general is to strengthen the Ike boards community as a whole.

Doubles afterwards were always a blast too, lol.

Well i rarely got to do the doubles afterwards just because of timezones, But i would be up for playing again if only to socialise
Although everyone discovered when we did it, I thoroughly despise the ditto matchup (probably why everyone at apex thought i was free before we actually played the yoshi's)
Vote is yes, I would like to see this happen again

Hopefully you won't have to put up with the ditto as much as before, if we go though with the idea for mixing in secondaries. Here is my post on that from back then:

How about this:

- First match of any set played is an Ike ditto by rule.
- The winner of match 1 must change to a secondary character.
- The loser of match 1 can choose to remain as Ike or switch to a secondary character.
- If the loser of match 1 wins match 2, they must play as a secondary character for match 3 and the loser can play as Ike or a secondary character.
- Optional rule: You cannot play as the same secondary character twice in a set.

It seems like a lot but it'd actually be pretty simple. Here are some example sets:

Match 1: :ike: (Nysyarc) vs :ike: (Nyke) on Battlefield Nysyarc wins!
Match 2: :dk2: (Nysyarc) vs :ike: (Nyke) on Delfino Nyke wins!
Match 3: :ike: (Nysyarc) vs :ganondorf: (Nyke) on Frigate Orpheon Nysyarc wins!

Example number two with optional rule:

Match 1: :ike: (Nysyarc) vs :ike: (Nyke) on Final Destination
lol, as if
Nyke wins!
Match 2: :dk2: (Nysyarc) vs :ganondorf: (Nyke) on Norfair Nysyarc wins!
Match 3: :falcon: (Nysyarc) vs :falco: (Nyke) on Smashville Nyke wins!

Discuss.

:248:
I think it would work quite well and add more flavor to the bi-weeklies.

Edit: I just realized that the stage list will probably need a bit of an overhaul, lol. I'd still like it to be as liberal as possible but I'll take out all the stages that are definitely not legal in any real tournaments (Port Town wtf).

I'm fine with the bi-weeklies returning, given I've voiced for it every Summer. I don't come back home until the 20th, so I won't be up for doing weeklies that following weekend.

Also, I'm gonna go on a limb here and say the reason for NOT posting Ike related topics in the social thread is because the lack of tournament/fest attendance. When you aren't going to these, you lose touch with Smash, and you don't care as much. However, if you are going, then you naturally say you went to said place, and it leads to smash related convos.

True enough, and I'm hoping that the bi-weeklies will inspire people to get out to local tourneys more often. There are a lot of ways that they could help with that in theory. Plus obviously they'll spark more conversation about smash on their own.

Plus, it can be used as a way to highlight certain bad habits that people might have and they can improve from that, particularly if its the ike ditto (for example, i used to like using jab3 on shield, biweeklies quickly taught me that was not a good idea)

For the purpose of keeping stats and potentially incorporating records involving secondary characters, you'll have to let me know what character(s) other than Ike you used in a given set when you report the win/loss. That said, there should be no limit to how many different secondaries you can use over the course of a tournament, as long as I'm aware of each one.

I will probably implement, at least at first, the rule that you can't use the same secondary twice in one set. You always have the option of using Ike for your counter-pick after you lose, but you can also choose to play as a secondary.

As for Meta Knight... that's something we can discuss. Obviously we're all Ike mains, we all (should) hate the bat and especially on WiFi. Do we really need to officially state in the rules that he's banned or should it just be a gentleman's clause where if both players agree to it then one of them can choose MK? Or should he just be straight-up legal since Unity is disbanded and stuff?

Well, MK is fully legal here and (almost) everywhere else in europe. I reckon it should be gentlemens clause, I highly doubt any of us would be a pain in the arse about it

So when would these be played? I would really like to participate but i live in Sweden but the time zones would probably be a real pain.

Well, assuming we stick to the old system, the tournaments would each be held on a Sunday at 3:00 pm EST. Your time that would be 9:00 pm.

Now, we could try moving the time back an hour, starting at 2:00 pm EST. That would be 11:00 am for people on the west coast of NA but that's not actually too bad at all and if we're going to have quite a few people from Europe participating I definitely don't want to cater just to NA.
