I have to be honest, I hate the 3DS version's art style

The 3DS is graphically incapable to be as beautiful as the Wii U version's.
So they took a different direction, and I think it was the best they could've.
But it is as beautiful as the Wii U version, only in a different way. :p

I really, really like what they've done with the 3DS art style. I can't see them doing it much better than they have given the limitations of the hardware. :) I'm curious to see how big a difference it will make to the graphical feel when playing without character borders.

I think that the first 3DS pic you posted has terrible lighting, and that is why it looks so bad. I get where you're coming from, though.

When I look at the 3DS screenshots it just looks messy to me. There are to many overlapping colors. I think the outlines help that though.

Love how you use a very old screenshot of the game. Use some E3 or Direct footage instead. Here are some nice ones:

The 3DS graphics look very nice when you see them in person. Of course, they might look bad when shown as screenshots, but I still like them.

Sorry OP but your thread is a complete joke. Your complaining about the graphics on a handheld and comparing to the home console version.

Remember which smash will be more successful regardless of its 'sub par' art style you speak of.

Did u consider lighting effects? Toon link n link on 3DS pic was taking during dusk...kinda explains the dullness (no brainer). Mario n samus r bright bcuz of the light shining on them (no way!)

Lying about my country.
I'd like it if it wasn't for the outlines.

Thankfully, we can turn them off.

But really, while the Wii U focuses on detail, superior shading, and obviously a higher screen resolution, the 3DS has some pretty sexy colors in comparison.

I think it's just an unfortunate combination of the 3DS' hardware limitations compared to Wii U and still trying to make characters look "realistic" - all in all, everyone'll be moving so fast I think it'll look awesome.

Edit: Also I like the option to add outlines - especially for the competitive scene. It's something that, if not included, would've been something the community would've definitely complained about anyways.

I never liked the concept of a handheld Smash Bros. game in the first place, and I fear SSB4 also being available on the 3DS will split the community ("nope sorry bro, I only play it on 3DS"). I kind of wish the Wii U were much more successful, so there'd be less reliance on the handheld version for sales or no handheld version at all (though, to be fair, a handheld version was planned before the Wii U even came out).

Here's to hoping everyone that buys SSB4 on the 3DS will also buy it on the Wii U, lol.

Well, not everyone has a Wii U nor do they have the needs of getting one.
There will be players who are going to play exclusively on Smash 3DS, and they will say what you just said: "Sorry, I don't play Smash Wii U. Do you have Smash 3DS by any chance?".
Some people have been waiting for a handheld Smash Bros. game, and now it's finally coming. I know you're worried that the two versions will split the community, but this, sadly, is going to happen.

Anyways, back to topic, the 3DS version's art style is good....err, it's as good as the Wii U version's.

Or, people could just not be immature ****s about what version they have if they are stuck with one, and recognise that version choice is really just a matter of which console people have possession of and whether or not they are willing to buy the console the other Smash is on. Because pretty much everyone who has both systems is just gonna buy both games, and get the best of both worlds.

I kinda hate when people take "I only have a 3DS and can't afford/don't really want a Wii U right now so I will only have Smash 3DS for a while", and turn it into "**** YEAH 3DS SMASH PRIDE", and vice versa for people who only own Wii U systems. It's basically taking pride in the fact that you don't have the money to afford something.

If people didn't do that, there would be no split.

I really don't know why there has to be a split either, I'd say if you play on 3DS only good for you, but going to the point of not playing the Wii U version (lets say at a friend's house) even though they are virtually the same game with different features is a little stupid.

Wii U is better for tourneys obviously and online. 3DS is better for being on the go with or without friends, and either is good for being at someone's house (if they don't own a Wii U you play the 3DS version, if they do have a Wii U play that version, and you could even switch between them for more variety)

I'm skipping over most of this topic, BUT...

... It's been my experience that 3DS games look much better in-person than they do in screenshots. Kid Icarus is an excellent example; the game looks terrible in screenshots but beautiful in-person. When you hold a 3DS in your hand, the screen is much smaller and the game is in motion. It makes things look much more vivid and lifelike. It's just the nature of taking screenshots of a handheld game, and it's not very fair to use still images of characters that are more zoomed in than the WiiU counterpart images to criticize the 3DS version's graphics.

There's a reason the people who got to try the 3DS demo were surprised how good the graphics looked.

Obviously because screenshots are always blown up and that makes them bad quality so of course they would look better in person.

I dont like people who do that. For me im only getting the 3ds version its not that i dont like the wii u version it looks beutiful but i just dont have the money i will eventually get a wii u and smash in a couple years when i have the money but right now i have to go with the 3ds version plus i am always on the go and my tv is always being hogged so i would play smash bros 3d more often either way but i would play smash u whenever i got the chance in the future.

I don't mind the 3DS art style, but I do appreciate the ability to change the thickness of the sketchy outline around the characters. I'd probably just keep it one above no outline. It still looks clean, but of course, the Wii U version looks REALLY pretty cause, well, it's on Wii U. Yeah.

Other than the thick outlines, I don't mind the 3DS art style. Heck, I think it looks decent and definitely not something to get your panties in a bunch over.
