How to deal with a short hopper?

I main Mario, and didn't know where else to put this. I met a guy online today, and all he would do was short hop then follow it up with a bair, nair, or fair. I found almost no way to avoid it. I tried to shield when he did them, then punish it with a grab, but I always got pushed back, and he would roll away. Please help!

Space your own B-airs, look for U-tilts, U-smash, crouch and then whiff punish depending on character, it all depends on the situation.

And if I forgot to say it, try throwing out a couple fireballs.

Work on some OoS options. UpB and Up Smash come to mind.
