It must be stage boss week because we have another stage with a large NPC fighter interfering. At least he's got some good voice lines.

According to Smash Bros., it's Gaur Plain, not Gaur Plains.

Layout
Gaur Plain is quite a large stage, and is unique in that the main fighting area is located on top, rather than on the bottom. The top platforms have a walkoff to either side, with a gap in the middle. The gap does not have grabbable ledges. Underneath are a smattering of smaller platforms and a pillar with a spring. The spring bounces players up to the top level. Some platforms have grabbable ledges while others don't. A good rule of thumb is that a ledge is grabbable if there is no platform nearby or below. With the exception of the pillars, which are completely solid, all platforms can be dropped through from above and jumped through from below.

Worth noting is that even though Gaur Plain is a stage on both the 3DS and Wii U versions, the 3DS version is smaller and is missing the pillars and some of the lowest platforms.

Parts of the terrain can be destroyed by Metal Face. The stage repairs itself soon after he leaves. See below for additional details.

Players 1 and 2 start on the top level in the middle of each side. Players 3 and 4 start next to the gap. The Omega form has a pillar.

Gaur Plain has a stage boss but no other damaging hazards.

Gaur Plain, fully intact. The springs bounce players high enough to land on the top platforms.

Gaur Plain, with the left side destroyed. Metal Face is responsible, the players are incapable of destroying the stage themselves.

Gaur Plain, with the right side destroyed. Here the platform changes properties and is solid from above. Players can still jump through from below.

Day/Night Cycle
Gaur Plain goes through a constant day/night cycle. The stage starts at the beginning of the day, which lasts 50 seconds. Dusk lasts an additional 10 seconds before transitioning to night. Night and dawn likewise last 50 and 10 seconds, respectively.

The day/night cycle is only relevant in the context of Metal Face, who arrives at nightfall and leaves before dawn. It otherwise has no impact on the match.

Metal Face
Metal Face is the stage boss of Gaur Plain. He only appears at night and leaves before dawn. Since night lasts only 50 seconds, he has considerably less HP than Ridley so that players have a chance to kill him before he leaves. Approximately 100 damage is sufficient to kill him. When killed, Metal Face explodes for 17% damage and falls off the bottom of the screen. The explosion does not hurt the person that killed him. Even once he is killed, he can appear again later in the match.

Unlike Ridley, killing Metal Face does not grant a point in time battles.

He can appear on the stage at one of four positions:
  • On the top, straddling the gap.
  • In the middle, with his feet on different platforms.
  • On the left, destroying the stage with a laser before landing on the pillar below.
  • On the right, destroying the stage with a laser before landing on the platform below.

Metal Face on top, straddling the gap.

Metal Face in the middle.

Metal Face on the left after the terrain has been destroyed.

Metal Face on the right after the terrain has been destroyed.

When present, Metal Face can attack in one of three ways: with a laser, his claws, or by charging across the screen. Fortunately for the players, the laser and charge are only used in specific situations and his claws are normally the only threat.

Name|Picture|Notes
Laser|
|Only used when Metal Face first arrives over the left or right side. He sweeps a laser across the upper platform from the outside in, destroying that side's terrain, before coming to rest at the bottom of the stage. The laser is surprisingly large and can hit unwary players nearby. Does 10% damage. Metal Face himself does an additional 10% when landing.
Claw Slash|
|Once Metal Face is standing in position, he swipes at nearby players with his claws for 15% damage each. If no players are nearby, he does not attack. Depending on his position he may swipe once or twice per attack.
Charge|
|When leaving, Metal Face may sometimes charge across the screen. This is announced in advance by a voice clip mentioning a "parting gift" or similar phrase. Does 15% damage. The level Metal Face charges at appears to be based on his location before leaving, instead of aiming at a specific player.
Summary
  • Day/Night cycle governs when Metal Face appears. He only appears at night and leaves before dawn.
  • Metal Face has 100 HP.
  • Metal Face can destroy terrain with his laser, stage repairs itself once he leaves. Laser does 10% damage.
  • Metal Face swipes with his claws at nearby players for 15% damage, can swipe once or twice.
  • Metal Face sometimes charges across the stage when leaving for 15% damage.
  • Metal Face does 10% damage when landing on a player.
  • Metal Face has no attacks to hit players out of claw range once he's standing.

Well, usually when I am reading magazines I have paid for them and allocated time to them so, probably a good thing.

Is this Wii U version only because 3DS Gaur Plain is different :/
Thanks Sakurai for giving us two sorta-different stages with the exact same name

Yes, after a fashion. The 3DS version cuts out the two pillars and some of the very lowest platforms but the rest of the layout is intact. Also it doesn't have Metal Face.

Wii u only yeah, 3ds probably cant handle metal face(wouldnt be surprised if thats the case) and this stage would be a bit big for the 3ds, especially compared to the 3ds stages as a whole.

Another great analysis, lol. This is actually one of my favorite stages, Metal face is not nearly as intrusive as yellow devil or ****ing ridley.
