Layout
Flat Zone X is a transforming stage and, as per usual for transforming stages, lacks a consistent layout. The floor, walkoffs, and small overall size, however, are constant. The stage takes place inside an LCD Game & Watch game, and the blast lines are barely more than a roll's distance away from the edge of the screen.

Characters here get flattened into 2D projections, although the effect is not visually obvious unless the game is paused and players rotate the camera around. In terms of gameplay, this keeps all hitboxes and hurtboxes on a single plane, even when a character would normally animate into the foreground or background.

Players 1 and 2 start near the edges of the screen on the floor while Players 3 and 4 start closer to the middle. The Omega form floats over a void.

Flat Zone X has a number of stage hazards and other dynamic features.

Game & Watch
Each transformation on Flat Zone X lasts approximately 25-30 seconds. Transitions are signalled 5 seconds in advance by an LCD Game & Watch character (not Mr. Game & Watch himself) somewhere in the corner or near the edge ringing a bell and making a beeping noise. Except for the tea kettle, which has no hands to ring a bell with, but still makes the same noise. Each transformation is from an actual Game & Watch game.

The stage always begins in the Fire form, which is also the only one without damaging hazards. After transitioning to a different form, the stage switches back to Fire before moving on. There are a total of 4 forms in addition to Fire: Chef, Lion, Oil Panic, and Helmet. As with other stages that have similar transformation patterns, the stage will give each form a turn each in a cycle of 4. (Fire can be considered the "neutral form" for this stage and thus is not counted.) This means every 4th transformation can be predicted with 100% accuracy.

Name|Picture|Notes
Fire|
|Balconies on left side are standard platforms. Platforms in middle are usually, but not always, accompanied by a Manhole Game & Watch character, which fills in a single gap at a time but moves around randomly and without warning. Occasionally, the middle platforms vanish and are replaced by a pair of Fire Game & Watch characters that hold a trampoline between them. The trampoline is springy. The firemen move between 3 distinct locations, marked by the red lines on the ground.
Chef|
|Manhole Game & Watch character has not been observed in this specific game. Food falls down from the sky from 4 distinct locations while the Chef moves around to try and flip it back up. Food causes 8% damage on contact and then vanishes. Food stops being dangerous if it touches the ground. Chef can be attacked and has approximately 50 HP. If killed, the stage immediately transitions back to Fire without further warning.
Lion|
|Lion tamers move up and down between the 3 levels. Their chairs do 12% damage with horizontal knockback. Players on the ground can be easily ping-ponged back and forth. Roof of cage is solid from above.
Oil Panic|
|Human Game & Watch characters retaliate when struck by any attack for 13% damage. The man retaliates instantly while the woman pauses before leaping up slightly.
Helmet|
|This specific form is from the original Flat Zone stage in Melee. House roof on right side is a standard platform. (It also pulls from a lot more than just Helmet, featuring elements from Manhole and Oil Panic as well, but who's counting.) The Manhole Game & Watch character moves around as usual. Tools fall from the sky and do 10% damage, then vanish on hit or when they land on the ground. Another Game & Watch character emerges from either door and spills a barrel of oil on the ground, turning that section slippery.
Summary
  • Stage spends 25-30 seconds in each form.
  • Fire counts as the stage's default or "neutral" form, all other forms transition to and from Fire.
  • Food in Chef does 8% damage.
  • Chef himself has 50 HP and can be killed, causes instant transition back to Fire.
  • Lion tamer chairs do 12% damage, horizontal knockback.
  • People in Oil Panic counterattack for 13% when hit.
  • Falling tools in Helmet do 10%.
  • Oil slick in Helmet makes ground slippery.
  • Manhole character may or may not appear but fills in platform gaps at random.
