The 16th outing of Chicago's now LEGENDARY monthly series was an average tournament by many metrics, but it was special in one way; it was the last monthly held at EXP Gaming's current address before they move to the new venue. Some coming Wavedash Wednesdays will still feature those bright blue walls on the webcams, but our time at 6441 North Ave. in Oak Park, IL, is nearing it's end.

This month, there were no outstanding challengers to Kels' Melee throne. Neither Dart, nor Frootloop, nor Darkatma made their respective trips to take on The Man, The Myth. Instead, it was up to the usual suspects to continue their efforts to dethrone the long reigning EXPosure Melee champion.

Amid this, however, the prodigal son of EXP Gaming made his return to Chicago from school in Socal. Many eyes were on Captain Faceroll to see how he would fare after months spent training amongst the likes of Lil Fumi, Kira, Connor the Kid & other Socal players.

While most of the Melee bracket proceeded with little upsets to the status quo, Faceroll quickly made his way to Winner's Semis with upset wins over Bieber & Sago (who self-admittedly has historically had trouble handling Shiek). Scythe was also knocked into losers early as well by Kirkq, and as a result went on to eliminate ORLY at an uncharacteristically early 9th place.

Vro finally dealt with Faceroll, setting up the typical Vro / Kels Winner's Finals. The set proved insanely close, coming all the way down to last stock in game 5 on Stadium... where Vro promptly killed himself, giving Kels a free ride to GF.

In Loser's Quarters, Bieber got his revenge over Faceroll, and Oro?! defeated Sago, setting up another Shiek (Oro?!) vs Puff in Loser's Semis. Bieber showed that his loss to Faceroll was a flub, forcing Oro?! off Shiek and onto Marth where he made the 2 game comeback and got his shot against Vro in LFs.

Vro, with his eyes set on Kels, promptly 3-0d Oro?! in LFs. In Grand Finals we were treated to a sandbagging Kels who tried to prove something(I'm not sure what) by playing the first 3 games with Falcon before switching to Fox to try to bring the set back. Vro dispatched the Fox as well, taking it 3-1 and forcing a second set. In set two, however, Kels specially developed Anti-MarthShiek came into play and neither Vro's Marth nor his Falcon were up to the task. Kels 3-0 Vro.

Project M, in contrast to Melee, brought some serious shakeups to it's top 32 bracket.

On the Winner's side of Project M, the Winter break brought 2 Chicago Ness players back to EXP Gaming- Delicious Octorok and the rarely seen Aki. Octorok, despite an unusually poor bracket performance, gave us one of the most entertaining sets of the day in Pools against Ten's Fox that featured a 4 stock comeback in game 3. Aki was the story of the day, though. Utilizing some very clever and efficient edgeguarding, Aki was able to upset former EXPosure PM finalists Scythe and ORLY on his way to a WSF berth.

Elsewhere in bracket, Ellis was able to upset 3rd seed Kirkq in the 2nd round of Winner's, and DLA (after MONTHS of narrowly losing in 3.02) 2-0d Kels in Winner's Quarters.

Both of these upsets undoubtedly helped Oro?! and Sago en route to Winner's Finals; Oro?! would've had to play Scythe, who has historically given him trouble, and Sago's Luigi would have potentially run into an unorthodox matchup against Kirkq's ROB.

In Winner's Finals, Oro?! couldn't find an answer for Sago's Luigi, seemingly becoming frustrated by a few errors in game 2 and getting fairly cleanly 3-0d on both ZSS and Marth. This set up Sago for his first EXPosure PM Grand Finals coming from Winner's side.

Kirkq, after getting knocked all the way into Loser's round one, made an incredible run through the bracket, eliminating a laundry list of heavy hitters before their usual time; Octorok, Arty, Scythe, Faceroll, DLA, Kels and Oro?! ALL fell victim to the Notorious R.O.B. on his way to Grand Finals. Read that list of names again, it's insane. 3 of those guys have EXPosure PM titles under their belts, and the rest of them have all placed top 8 in PM more than once with the exception of Octorok.

In Grand Finals, though, the dream of the ultimate Loser's bracket run was dashed by Sago in stylish fashion, ending the set 3-1 with a sick zero-to-death combo.
