Do Tiers Matter?

Tiers matter, but not for casual matches or your locals. They only truly matter at big tournaments like Evo where you want as many advantages as possible. However, I think lower tiers are better for the player in the long-run. If you play a low/mid tier instead of high/top tier, you'll be forced to play better and master that character along with the game. Thus, playing lower tiers forces you to become a better player.

I will probably be an example of this later on. I used to use Sheik all the time, and won without trying too hard. Now I use my other main, Marth, much more often and am slowly becoming a better player because I have to. My end goal is to become the best Marth player where I live, and eventually the best Marth in general.

My advice is always choose the character you love first in a set of matches, but switch to any higher tier character you practice if you're not doing so hot against your opponent. Unless your opponent is so good character choice doesn't matter for you, in which case just use the match for practice with ANY character.

In the end, tiers are what characters have the least disadvantages. They don't matter if you're skilled enough to get past them, but they're always good to keep in mind.
