The Donkey Kong Boards Video and Critique Thread

The primary purpose of this thread is to form a library of current DK matches and to offer critiques for dk matches in general. The old dk video thread can be found at the bottom.

This update included a list of the most important matches that were recorded in 2011 til now. I'm still missing quite a few and plan on subdividing the matches in to Tourney Singles, Tourny Doubles, Money Matches, and Friendlies. All the matches currently listed are tourney and moneymatches only.

I will no longer be able to record matches personally seeing as the software for my recording device was lost.

Welcome to the New New Official Donkey Kong boards video, critique, and replay uploading thread. Have a video you want critiqued? Put it here and Cranky will mock it while other DK mains can critique it. Have a replay you need uploaded? Put it here and Scabe can upload it while Cranky states his opinions on the unnecessary technology we have nowadays. Want to post that awesome vid of your DK showing MK who rightly deserves their name to be initialized? Put it here so everyone can enjoy it (Cranky will probably be on your side in this case).

This thread will have the most current videos up top, followed by all the members of the DK Crew beneath in alphabetical order for easy searching. These videos will also be in chronological order by person. Please post the video in the format of "You (DK) vs. Thebadguy (Badguy's Character)" and then what kind of match it is so I can get it up here as easily as possible.

Get Your Kong Kritiqued!

RATE MY DK

Every couple of days someone comes over here and wants their DK to be critiqued, why spam up our boards?

The player can put their videos here and in the video thread. The difference is that this thread is for discussion, the other is just posting for future people to see.

Critiqued Videos

1. If you want to post multiple videos then please indicate which ones you would like to be most critiqued. When people critique someone they may only look at the first video so keep that in mind.

2. If you can then you should play actually sets with counterpicking and whatnot so we can see what you are really like in a tournament style (Real tournaments are the most preferable of course). Of course just friendlies are perfectly fine also.

3. If you have posted videos in this thread prior to this time that you want to post videos, and want to show or ask for improvement, either quote your old post or indicate it in the new post and state that this is you playing after critique.

4. Mention if you want a real in depth critique or just a couple of tips to help your game.

5. Remember, this is to help you, in no way will it hurt you to post here... nobody will yell at you (well I guess I can't guarentee that).

I don't think I need an extensive critique done but some pointers would be excellent, I am excited to use them when I play my friend again. I played a tournament style friendly with my neighbor, best out of five. I lost the set overall but I think I played well in my first, third, and fourth matches.

Get Your Replays Recorded And Uploaded!

Well you’ve come to the right place! I can record and upload your replays!

How it all works:

Choose a replay that you want uploaded. I’ll only be accepting one replay at a time, so be sure to choose your best match.
Copy the chosen replay on to a SD card from your Wii.
Put the SD card in your computer and locate the .bin file (replay)

File Path For PAL: \private\wii\APP\RSBP\rp
File Path For NTSC: \private\wii\APP\RSBE\rp
Upload the replay to http://www.mediafire.com with your forum name on the folder. Once it's done uploading, click share and post the shortest link to this thread.

That's all you have to do! The rest is up to me.

Once I get your .bin file, I’ll record the replay and upload it to my YouTube channel and post up the DK.
You can then request another replay to be recorded.

Guidelines:

I can’t record Brawl+, Balanced Brawl, Brawl Minus etc. I can only record normal Brawl.

It's useless to come on this thread and ask if someone will record your replays, then wait for a response before sending them. Just post the Link.

I have lots of character textures and stage textures, chances are you’ll love them or hate them. I’ll be recording matches with textures on. I won’t put them on if you ask me to and if it’s a doubles match.

For critiquing purposes choose a replay that shows a close match, or a match of you getting owned.

I’ll only be accepting matches of your DK.

Yeah the first two videos didn't work for me. But they look like they're just examples of what the video's will look like.

After watching that vid... I think I'm in love.

I need help though. I have a vid I want to upload (Pretty recent video) but I've never uploaded anything in my life unless it was a picture I saved too my computer.

But I wanna just let you know, I've not really looked up much on Donkey Kong. I have a hard time understanding a way to put textual instructions into actual game play. I usually learn by watching videos.

Btw, Will just made me fall in love with DK. Makes me wanna practice the things I saw there.

I now realize that you NEED to kill the purples whenever possible, cause they prevent you from gimping and approaching and are just a pain in the ***. But apparently down-b doesn't kill them... does anyone know how to kill them?

Hmm, try sorting it out to date modified then the look for the most recent ones. Or just try putting only the videos you want on your SD card.

In both matches you did really well, the purple Pikmin really did screw you up. I wish I knew what to do against Olimar.

I have a lot of experience with this matchup. So I will give you all the suggestions I can think of =)

First off, I think up b is a pretty good way to kill the pikmin that attach to DK. However, there are times when it is more beneficial for you to jump and up air to get them off of you, since up air covers most of DK's body (at least his torso and head areas) and gets you out of the way of more incoming pikmin that are being tossed. Anything that up air doesn't kill, b-air/n-air will. Up air is usually the best option imo since it's really fast and covers most options. In addition I think up tilt is another good grounded method of killing pikmin, or down smash if you are far away from him.

Also, I saw you tried to go for that up b gimp from the edge but missed the timing =P That works reallllly well against olimar if you hit him out of his double jump with it. Then you drift back onto the stage or regrab the edge depending on when you think he is going to up b. But that is a great tool toward gimping him as well.

Don't be afraid to go mad far off stage against Olimar and throw out a b-air, bc even if you miss he will be forced to recover low, in which case your up b can beat him back to the edge before he can grab it with his up b. Also, it's fairly easy to expect an air dodge or down b super armor, so just waiting for it then b-airing usually works well.

In terms of purple pikmin.... sigh. Those things really are a pain in the ***. In order to prevent most of them from coming out, you're going to have to stay on him. And its really hard to pressure him when the only true ways in are grounded up b and down b.

In terms of getting through and killing the purples, you absolutely need to use fully charged punches as often as possible. In addition to killing the purples, it beats Olimar's grabs. Yes, Olimar cannot grab armor the punch, if he grabs you while it hits him, the grab auto breaks!

Also, in general a good approach if you can get in close to Olimar- down tilts on his shield. It's hard to get in that close, but if you can, spam those d tilts!! Olimar's grab out of shield is too slow to prevent the tilts from hitting his shield/eventually poking through.

Keep asking and I'll keep putting forth what I know. =)

If you are at low percent and olimar has to grab the ledge while recovering (or mid percent on his last stock), just stay on the ledge and let him hit you. Could have won you game 1. The stage spike won't kill you and it prevents him from grabbing the ledge (in mid percent case he dies first).
