Hey has anybody here who has been playing the game have any experience with the classic controller? How does it feel? Does it work well? Advantages disadvantages etc?

I searched for a similar topic and couldn't find anything so don't flame me if this has already been done.

Thanks in advance to those who can provide info!

Yes i would also like to know. I've only played smash on the 64 which was just purely leisure and would like to play at a competitive level and hopefully participate in some local tournaments. I'm just contemplating on whether to get an old gamecube control or if i should go in with the new and get a classic control(ironicly).

Hey, I don't have any hands-on experience with Brawl, but one thing I have already ordered is THIS

T-Wireless NW

I got mine from

PC Connection

it has a classic controller layout but has grips and rumble. It is a hybrid between classic controller and a gamecube controller. It has customizable buttons too. One thing that this has over the wave bird is that it has rumble. I am definitely going to use it for brawl.

Good luck with your information!

I doubt there's anything to say, it'll be functionally the same as a Gamecube controller and whether or not you think it's more comfortable is gonna be up to you.

I used it a lot at eforall (first time using it at all). It's not as comfortable but as far as practicality goes it should work just as good as a GCN controller. If you want a normal controller but can't get your hands on a GCN one I'd go with this.

doesn't it though? ;)

honestly though I make a rule to pretty much NEVER buy third part pads but I really was swayed by this one, it's something I've been waiting Nintendo to do for awhile. wireless + rumble, and also the 4 button layout makes it good for Virtual Console play also over the gamecube pad's dominant 'A' button design.

Still love the GC pad but wavebirds are like impossible to find these days and I <3 wireless.

don't they not allow 3rd party controllers in tournaments, since people may put on turbo

oh, and has anyone played with Wiimote and Nunchuk?

confirmed. Sending supplies.
I'm only concerned with the analog sticks on the CC. They stick out a little too much (compare to the GCN controller; you'll see what I mean), and they seem to slide a bit easier than the GCN stick. I'm wondering how that'll affect gameplay. Are there any impressions out there?

Yeah that was also something that I was worried about. I'd like to use the classic controller because I don't really wanna fork out 80 Aussie dollars for a new wavebird.

probably, is there even an advantage to that? plus it'd be pretty obvious.

In any case, that is fine, I'll just use it for personal enjoyment and convenience, I'm already using them for playing through the DKC games with my bro on the VC

Bump. Does anybody have any impressions of the classic controller yet?

There must be somebody out there...

Another question! Rumours have been spread stating that it is not possible to shorthop with the classic controller. Are these true? Can anyone confirm/deconfirm these?

Also, does the right analogue stick function as a c stick?

Honestly guys, any impressions would be greatly appreciated.

People fear change which is where all the *****ing about Brawl and sticking to the GC controller comes from.

I'll be using Wiimote & Nunchuk.

Well personally i'll give all the styles a whirl(EXCEPT Wiimote tilted, I hate the feel of it)

But GC is just trusted, and easy to pick up.

I think the classic controller will take some getting used to. I used it at E for All and absolutely sucked with it. But other people seemed to do fine, so it was probably just me.

I use my classic controller interchangeably with my Cube controller.

When playing Smash, the CC feels a lot like the the cube controller, plus shielding is much easier because you don't have the analogue shoulders to click down. But of course, I remapped the controls slightly:
Standard Attacks -> A to B
Specials -> B to Y
Jump -> Y to A

The defaults on the CC I found really uncomfortable, but changing the buttons like that it basically feels like a cube one. In all honesty, I'd rate the Classic Controller = Cube Controller in usability.

Wiimote only is surprisingly good, but it's not as responsive as a CC/Cube controller. It's handy if you just want to quickly do something or play a quick match. I played some SSE on this at the least. :p

The control setup I found the hardest to use was the Wiimote + Nunchuck. Both Shield and Jump are mapped to the nunchuck's C and Z buttons by default and I found it incredibly awkward to use both buttons at the same time and there's just not enough quickly accessible buttons on the Wiimote nunchuck style to remap them over there. I can see this being great if you get used to it (More fingers for different buttons), but after many years of smash it's weird to get used to.

I used the Classic Controller for Guilty Gear Accent Core before I picked up my joystick, and it felt perfectly fine. GG has more precise timing, so I'd assume it'd be 100% ok to use with a "dexterously" simpler game like Smash.

That some really useful information, thanks! I get the impression a Classic Controller is better because its easier to shield? Or does GC make up for it in some other way?

Most of my GC controllers are a bit rough or broken now so i plan on buying more controllers and im unsure which to use. Ill get to test GC controller when my friend gets his imported brawl so that also will help me decide.

Like I said, I'm using them both interchangeably now.

It's really down to preference and practicality. If you've got a couple of Wiimotes and no cube controllers, the CC is practical anyhow.

Thanks for all your info!

Can you dispell the rumour regarding the CC's inability to shorthop?

I also asked before if the right analog stick was the CC equivelant of the C stick, is it?
On that note, the analog sticks on the GCC and CC are said to play differently. How do they feel comparatively?

Thanks in advance

ok, well I got them a few days ago and have been playing melee with them.

First thing is, they are SMALL, so if you have big meaty man hands, stay away, but small is not always bad, but it can get crowded.

secondly, they take 3 triple AAAs, now they have not died on me and I've had them on pretty much all the time because me and my friends have been playing a lot and the batteries are doing fine. Still, it's more of a hassle than a having a corded controller, or one with a charger pack. Still, no more hassle than a wavebird, and the battery life is supposed to be long, and has been so far.

it has rumble, which is nice, and has the shoulder buttons stacked like a PS or XBOX controller instead of in the awkward way the classic controller does it.

the back shoulder buttons are still analogue, but it doesn't matter for brawl.

the buttoms can be mapped to different buttons, but again, that doesn't matter in brawl as the game lets you do that itself.

overall, it functions well, and even though I've only had it for a short while, I can already tell that it is a solidly built controller, not like the majority of 3rd party pads, and feels tight and sturdy.

there is nice ergonomic shape but it isn't too thick.

the only real thing is that it is SMALL, other than that, it works great, and I'm going to continue to use it. Of course it prolly won't be allowed in tourneys, but it's good, and has a nice white blue color scheme like the wii, with the blue being grips that aren't too busy or cheap looking, but just nice.

overall I might still have to recommend a regular gamecube pad for the average smash player, but these are working just dandy for me.

final score

7/10

I've never been a huge fan of the GC controller for Smash (though it works pretty good for other games I think it's just horrible for Smash). I brought my classic controller and played with it almost exclusively (for over six hours). At first the joystick and throws/shielding felt a little awkward but after not too long I liked using it WAY more than a GC controller and had no problems. It was fantastic. If you have a more detailed question regarding it I can help. I loved the N64 controller so a lot of people might not agree with me but I don't really care. It's wireless, more reliable than a WaveBird, and you can save your custom controller configuration/name to the Wiimote.

Sure. As for short hopping...I use the buttons (I think most people do) and don't recall having a problem short hopping though I was mainly focusing on trying out all of the new character's moves...I really don't see why it wouldn't work with it. The Dojo explains you just release the button quickly and I swear I was short hopping plenty but I don't remember explicitly testing it or having a problem of any kind.

I'm a Smash 64 player that didn't like Melee (I love Brawl) so I'm don't use the c-stick (since it didn't exist). Wait a minute...I just remembered the Dojo:

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/images/various14/various14_071126e-l.jpg

You can see in that picture it labels the right stick as "Smash" so yes, I can say 100% sure it must act like a c-stick, and I did screw up the screen where you move it about during character/stage selection with the stick (which the c-stick did in Melee).

The GC and CC analog sticks are definitely different, and I found after a short adjustment period that I preferred the CC sticks.

For my controls I changed them up a bit though, I turned tap jumps off, and changed Y to special, B to standard attacks, and A to jump (it makes it resemble an N64 controller as close as possible).

Classic Controller really works well. I think the two best setups for Brawl are GC with Y mapped to Special, and CC with X Special, Y Grab, A Jump, and B Attack.

Thanks so much for all your info/time!

I think I'll grab a CC and a corded GCC and see which I prefer after a while. Sideways wiimote is definitely out of the question for me rofl.

This is a hard one for me. I love this Wavebird I just got, but I think shielding, quick smashing, and taunting would be easier with the CC. I really can't decide. The analog stick also seems more responsive.

I play Smash64 with an Xbox 360 controller, and it works great. You'll probably end up liking that.

Is the thrustmaster a good quality controller? Because I know that madcatz and pelican always sucked for gamecube because they were horrible quality.
