Ruleset for Melee Singles & Doubles and PM Singles:
Double Elimination Style
  • All sets are best of 3 matches except Winner's/Loser's Finals, Semis, and Grand Final sets which are best of 5.
  • 4 stock, 8:00-minute timer
  • Items OFF
  • Friendly Fire ON for doubles
  • Ties after the time limit are determined by stocks, then by percentage.
  • Wobbling is legal.
  • Stalling with Jigglypuff's infinite sleep or Peach's Wall Bomber are NOT banned.
  • Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in forfeiture of the match for the player that initiated the action.
  • Dave's Modified Rule: You cannot counterpick a stage you already won on in a set unless agreed upon by the opponent.
  • Player's Choice Clause: You may play by a rule outside of this ruleset if your opponent agrees to it as long as it does not deliberately delay the tournament process. In the event of a disagreement, house rules stand.
  • Choosing a character: In the event neither contestant wants to pick their character first, do a double-blind pick using either a neutral 3rd party or a piece of paper.
Stage strike: from the neutral (noncounterpick) stages for the first match of the set in "1221" fashion:
  1. RPS (rock paper scissors) for first stage ban.
  2. First player strikes one stage.
  3. Second player strikes the next two stages.
  4. First player strikes one stage.

  4. Loser chooses character
General Gameplay Rules:
  • BYOC (Bring your own controller): Players are expected to bring their own controller and be prepared for every tournament set.
  • Pause can be requested off and that request cannot be denied. If one pauses mid-match, the person who initiated the pause loses their current stock. If the pause causes the opponent to lose their stock (Such as interfering with recovery), the person who initiated the pause loses two stocks.
  • DQ Rule: Arriving too late for a match will result in a DQ. Player(s) will have 5 minutes to show up after their match is called before a loss of the first match. 5 more minutes results in a loss of the set. For doubles, both players on a team need to be present in order to play.
  • No game hacks are permitted for tournament matches. You may use them for friendlies but please revert to regular melee or PM 3.5 for tournament matches
Coaching:
Coaching is not allowed. This means that once you sit down to play your set, you should not be talking to anyone else in before or during matches. This includes discussions of what stage to pick or ban and habits of the other player to watch for and punish. We feel this will help maintain the competitive nature of Smash. For obvious reasons, this is difficult to enforce, but please respect these rules.

General Info and Venue Rules:
The venue is in the basement of Lopata House, which is located in the village of Washington University's main campus. Lopata House is at the intersection of Forest Park Parkway and N Big Bend Blvd, but access to the building is only available from Snow Way Drive off of N Big Bend Blvd.

Getting into Lopata:
The building may require swipe access to get into which only students will have. If the doors are locked, there will be a phone number you can call to get let into the building. You can also try to follow someone else into the building too.

Parking:
All of the yellow parking lots on WashU's campus are free to everyone on Saturdays and Sundays. This means that you can park in any of the parking lots on Snow Way Drive in the Village. The closer to N Big Bend Blvd, the closer you will be to the venue so feel free to turn into the first lot you get to. The first lot is up a small, followed by an additional parking structure with a lot more spaces in it. If both of those are full, there is an additional parking lot a little further down Snow Way Drive, but if that fills up should be able to park in the dominoes parking lot that is near by.

Food/Pizza:
We will be ordering in pizza for dinner so if you would like to be part of that order, you may pay when you check in. You must decide when you check in since you can only join the pizza order when you check in. If you do not wish to pay for pizza, there is a Wash U dinning hall (the village) literally 1 minute walking distance from the venue. You can pay with cash or credit card there if you are not a student and are not on the meal plan. The food at Wash U is very good (I think we are ranked top 5 college food in the USA?) so I recommend it. Please return to the venue when the lunch or dinner break is over.

Venue Fee:
Please remember that if you bring a full set up you will have the $5 venue fee waived! We will also need extension cords/power strips so please also bring those if you can and you may also get a discount!
