I should look into getting our local events into smashboards rankings. It wouldn't likely catapult any of us into this (maybe Shaky?), but it would be nice for our players to be a bit less invisible.

Okay, rewrote the description. Hopefully covers everything better.

I think if Texas got their act together, Shaky is a degree 2 by virtue of TGC1 beating Denti and Fliphop http://challonge.com/TGC1singles/standings http://smashboards.com/threads/official-tgc-event-1-209-entrants-houston-tx.393025/

Cool idea! I'll try and make a case for myself. Here are my set records against every currently listed player that I have played against:

  • vs Mr. R (0-1)
  • vs SnowballBob33 (1-0) Video
  • vs Logic (1-1) Video 1 , Video 2
  • vs Boss (2-1)
  • vs Seagull (2-2) Video
  • vs AcidtoneX58 (1-0) Video
  • vs Pink Fresh (1-1)
  • vs Junebug (1-0)
So out of all of the players that I have played against that are currently listed in this thread, I have:
  • A winning record against 4 players
  • A losing record against 1 player
  • An even record with 3 players
I think that should qualify me! But I can't be butthurt either way, this list is a lot more selective than the last one which I definitely like.

I suppose I'll go on to 3rd degree Japanese Players.
Kirihara[キリハラ]:rosalina: Ranked 9th on the Umebura point rankings, placing 6th at Umebura 13. Knocked aMSa out of winners and eliminated Nietono in losers at Umebura 13.

The next two are based on results of Super Sumabato, a tournament held the 5th of April.
Edge[エッジ]:4diddy: Winner of Super Sumabato, 2nd place at Sumabato 2. Defeated Choco at Super Sumabato.
Saiya[サイヤ]:4falcon: 2nd place at Super Sumabato. Defeated Choco at Super Sumabato.

I still haven't gone through with iteration #1 yet. I'm expecting a bit of clarity from the Texans soon-ish and won't be looking at third degrees yet. However, this is all perfectly valid for the near future.

Degree 1
Megafox (:4fox:) Victories over Fliphop (39th) Trela (78th) Denti (27th) ALSM (33rd)

(These are all in terms of 1st or 2nd degree people)
Beat ALSM first, Trela second, Denti third, fliphop 4th
(http://smashboards.com/rankings/the-road-to-tgc-2.3714/event)

Beat Trela first, then Denti twice
(http://smashboards.com/rankings/otaku-cafe-april-monthly-wii-u-singles.5480/event)

Beat Trela first, Denti second, then Shaky in GF set 2.
http://challonge.com/TGC1singles

Degree 2

Trela (:4robinf:) - Victories over Fliphop (39th) and Megafox (66th) at SAM 1 (not 100% sure if he might've used MK or charizard against either of em but doubt it honestly)

Victories over Fliphop (39th) at TGC 1
(temporary Links until added in ranking) http://challonge.com/TGC1singles
http://smashboards.com/threads/official-tgc-event-1-209-entrants-houston-tx.393025/

Espy (:4littlemac:/:4sonic:) - Victories over Denti (27th) with Little Mac in 2 games and Sonic 1 & ALSM (33rd) with Little Mac all 3 games and Trela (78th) with Sonic
(http://smashboards.com/rankings/otaku-cafe-wii-u-singles.4534/event)

A lot of TX results still waiting approval or simply to be submitted (if they ever do), especially our biggest one TGC 1. So some players except the ones already in first degree will most likely be higher.
Also some of the results might be wrong in the form of not finding more tournaments they might've won against more people.

In terms of scenes with more possible degree 2 people, don't think Austin has anyone yet taking even 2nd degree worthy names in TX, Houston prolly has Whispy Diddy, Karna an upcoming sheik, Gnes Shulk, BC for villager/Diddy.
Dojo Pika/Sheik in San Angelo I believe, K Prime SA, Dallas Dakpo Luigi for results I haven't dug up enough while for my city, K prime is I think 1-2 or 1-3 against Espy.

Oh right, I forgot about avoid but I also didn't remember if he was Houston or Dallas.

Grimturtle/Razer would most likely be 2nd degree, but haven't checked his wins yet. I imagine he has a few against anyone that isn't diddy kong most likely.

I'll be updating the list sometime tomorrow (1 week in), with the following suggestions.
If any additions come in that fulfill the requirements (post #2) they'll be added as well.

NA Diddy/Sheik are free for people to put suggestions forward (they likely do have to be noted/degree 1s though), but it may be a little too early still.

Shaky also met M2K in Grand Finals coming from Losers, and he reset the bracket against M2K. If you're counting sets as well you could use that.

I'll make a case for Lil' Mac main @Alphicans.

At Apex, he eliminated 35th ranker @Zex [1]. He was eliminated by 15th place k9.
During the Worldwide Smash Tournament, he eliminated 7th place 6wx [1], as well as the player who eliminated Mr.R [2].

Having won sets versus two players in the first degree exclusively with his Little Mac, as well as participated in two major tournaments using Little Mac as his main again, he should certainly be in the notable Little Mac player list. He seems to be the only top level Little Mac main, as both MVD and Espy seem to use Mac as a secondary.

I'm not all sure what to do with tgc1, if this doesn't get added you can be sure future tgc's and possibly bigger events hosted in houston won't be added. SA will do them all the time tho cause Nike is the best TO.

I understand players have reservations about lag, but I don't see why they can't be used as supporting evidence. The results from online tournaments are shown to approximate the results of in-person tournaments (the tourney in question a fair example of that itself). Bottom line is that better players will tend to rise to the top regardless.

In addition, there are a number of players who are not located in areas with players in the top 60. Alphicans, for example, is listed as living in Alberta, Canada - a few thousand miles away from the nearest top 60 player. It is perhaps not so easy for those players to show international results except in online tourneys or at travel-worthy events such as Apex. However, he does indeed have a victory at Apex (despite what appears to be a round one default, possibly due to the Apex troubles?) over a top player at Apex, and online evidence supporting that this was not a fluke occurrence.

Isn't this exactly the sort of situation that 'degrees of separation' policy is intended to support? Players who do not get to play many top 60 players are given positions based on both their direct victories and their vicarious ones? I personally do not feel that 'X beat Y in a serious online tourney finals match' should be any less valid than 'X beat Z, and Z beat Y, so maybe X could beat Y'. In fact, the other way around seems more likely - a direct match of any sort should be a better indicator than an indirect one.

He qualified already, I wasn't denying him. I was just noting that we wouldn't take into consideration online events, it is a separate ranking on this website at the very least.
But you're telling me that he didn't actually play the set with him? I'll ask Zex about it, if they didn't actually play and it was a forfeit it's... precarious. If no one in the region or close to your region is towards the top 60 is it because your tournaments aren't uploaded enough?

No, I'm sorry, probably added extraneous info there. The match with Zex was fine. Alphicans forfeited the first match in that pool on the first day of Apex against another player entirely. This is actually completely non-relevant to his performance, except that I was trying to drum up support by saying that he had a loss starting Apex. As a result, he fought Zex with a loss under his belt already for entry into the most stacked pool of the tourney, the one with Zero, False, K9, Player-1, Zucco, K9, and Max Ketchum among others. It was the most lopsided pool in general, which is sad for many good players (such as Zex himself!)

As for the region thing, some regions just have smaller tourney scenes. You can't expect a single isolated Canadian city to have a scene like New York, SoCal, Texas or Chicago, with many top level players. Sheer population wise, New York metropolitan has almost as many people in it as all of Canada, after all. I'm just saying that in situations where a player has only a single major tournament appearance, there shouldn't be any reason that online tournaments can't be used as supporting evidence for their abilities! There are also regions like NorCal that don't report on Smashboards frequently at all, despite being fairly large.

You probably shouldn't use "Rayquaza", "Ubers", and "Borderline", because any Pokemon player that knows what those terms are referring to will think that they signify the strength of the character rather than their usage, and obviously this isn't supposed to be an actual tier list. Just stick to OU, UU, RU and NU. Maybe make up another one if you want.

And that's apart of the system's goals to change. Top 60 right now was a magic number that seemed to cover multiple regions relatively well. Mexico, Australia and perhaps West Coast/Centre Canada don't have any distinctive links right now, but most other areas do. Texas were not uploading most of their results to the rankings before this and they also felt they wouldn't be able to break "other bigger regions" too. Either way, Alphicans does become a 2nd degree link for the region now, it's a start.
At this stage (sub-5 players for a character), stuff like the online result means little. I could see it being some sort of argumentative point if the character were contentious but they would still be holding a lot less weight than in-person tournaments and otherwise the separation requirements still must exist.

You probably shouldn't use "Rayquaza", "Ubers", and "Borderline", because any Pokemon player that knows what those terms are referring to will think that they signify the strength of the character rather than their usage, and obviously this isn't supposed to be an actual tier list. The distinction would be the word "use" rather than "power". It's really just a representation of the first post. It just so happened those titles fit in the current things well. Also this is slight homage to the Brawl character rankings list which used those terms as well (and at some stages MK was put into Rayquaza tier or whatever, lol).

Not the thread to discuss that, probably! But yeah, there were a few pools that were super stacked, especially round two pools, and tons of pools that were pretty bare in the first round. Seeding is tough this soon past a release, just not that many tourneys to go off and tourney organizers have limited exposure/expertise.

He's commonly tagged as ALSM. He's the one person under Palutena right now :p
Actually, I am more known as AeroLink, ever since my super active Project M days. I was ALSM (abbreviation for AeroLink the SoulMaster for those who don't know) in Brawl (which I am now realizing a lot of the players from South Texas still see me as that lol), but I would appreciate it if you would change it to AeroLink, who I am most known as. That way you won't get confused comments from other people.

What makes ZeRo so good? Commentators and competitors say that he is a tier of his own; like brawl ice climbers.

Because he hasn't lost a tournament since november. He actually hasn't lost a set since november and rarely loses games.

no ****......seriously...... you honestly don't think I knew this or something of the sort.....its kinda silly how i need to spell out every word so people would understand. My question is: Why does he dominate every tournament he goes to? He consistently places very high and I wonder why nobody else has even rivaled him.

@ busken busken , chill. A simple misunderstanding doesn't require that.

Okay,
ZeRo has told me he's put tens of hours minimum into every character in the game. This was the entirety of pre-WiiU, but that guy was spending 18-20 hours a day streaming and playing non-stop. This guy already had a very very very high level understanding of smash fundamentals and was able to see and apply things through practice in a way that allowed him to be dominant. Out of any other top player in Smash4 now, I'm not sure any other has put that much game-wide work as he has. This would mean on average he's less likely to be janked by something, he will be anticipating more and with his godlike reaction speed that snowballs in terms of player dominance. Nairo has obviously put a great deal of work with a lot of characters too and you can see why that's good for him when he's capable of beating top Sheiks with Zelda.

Let me reiterate also his godlike reaction speed. He makes other top players known for godlike reaction speed feel awful, it's a very common complaint I hear from them when talking about their matches with ZeRo.

He has a great work ethic, great fundamentals, great reaction speed and is smart. He's never felt limited to requiring "good opponents" or whatever to practice with, he went from top 32 in Brawl at Apex to top 5 the next year secluded from his scene in Chile (banned because he was too good, I'm not joking) and having passable wifi although at that stage little top players respected so he was still mostly secluded.

To top it all off, his mindset is to win, and he'll use the best option to win knowing how strong that is.

Also I got the official rankings list updated (like, just now), probably quite a few things to look at/change.
But for one, Megafox is now 24th, from like 66th. GimR now will classify as a degree 1 G&W, which will be interesting due to how many degree 2s that opens up haha. AverageJoe, Espy, Tweek also join degree 1.

So, GimR's basically James J. Braddock or Micky "Irish" Ward? Cool, he's a gatekeeper or stepping stone for everyone. No offense, GimR; I love your 9 Judge shenanigans and your Falco. :p

If I remember correctly, that would mean Mik! would be a 2nd degree Ness since he beat GimR before, along with Ash23 for Bowser - gets bodied here while using Falco first then Mr. G&W -, and would Brolylegs count against GimR's Falco? I'm sorry GimR. :smash:

Rankings seem awkward kinda, Megafox is more of 20th/21st, unless the system is "this person has more points or barely less points than you in X amount of brackets compared to your Y so they're better for having a lot of points in less tournaments"
Another example, I'm 118 with 320 with 11 brackets and tied for someone in my city with 340 in 12 brackets

I've beaten boss before and am 2-1 with GIMR.

Don't think I have any notable wins other than those though.

Surprised Kenny isn't a notable for pikachu. Could've sworn he's beaten boss, logic, and gimr before.

Patch johns, I haven't updated the "to update" post, but I think one of my most important factors is the changes in the official top 60, and when I get a second opportunity I'll get to the recent posts.

Q - Should it count for a victory over someone listed if they weren't using their "main"? In this case GIMR's probably taken a majority of his points through G&W. But broly beat his Falco? It's also just at the edge of the 3 month limit.

And DunnoBro, can you provide tournaments these happened at? I wub records. If you can grab the extra info for both kenny and yourself your admittance should be fine :p

Rain mains :4sheik:now apparently, as announced on his Twitter. Sheik was previously his secondary. M2K said that Rain was beating his Diddy more than 2/3 of the time, and Rain used Sheik in finals of Umebura 14, so I think it's safe to add to the list.

Also, Japanese player rankings were updated to reflect results from Umebura 14 and Super Sumabato.
Top 10 is as follows:
#1 Rain :4diddy::4sheik: 32699.18 points. 1st at Umebura 14, 13, and 11. 4th at Umebura 12.
#2 Choco [ちょこ] :4zss: 13331.24 points. Top 12 at Umebura 14, 3rd at Super Sumabato, 2nd at Umebura 13, Top 12 at Umebura 12, 2nd at Umebura 11.
#3 DtN|Nietono [DtN|にえとの] :4sheik:9064.62 points. Top 8 at Umebura 13, 1st at Umebura 12, Top 16 at Umebura 11.
#4 Edge [エッジ] :4diddy:9061.75 points. 1st at Super Sumabato.
#5 Earth [あーす] :4pit:(:4fox:) 8017.96 points. 2nd at Umebura 14, Top 8 at Super Sumabato.
