As we all know, Sakurai has set up four controller types for Brawl. In his most recent update he goes into detail on the basic default controls being used for the Wii-mote. So here it is:
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017a.gif" alt="Explaining the Wii-mote." align="middle" border="0" height="365" width="340" /></p>
<!--more-->The controls are as follows:
<ul>
<li>The directional pad controls your jump (up), moving left and right respectively, crouching (down) and dropping through platforms (tap down).</li>
<li>Button 1 is for Special Moves (Think of this as where B button moves used to be).</li>
<li>Button 2 is for Standard Attacks (Once again, think of this as where your A button moves used to be).</li>
<li>Grab is with the (-) Button, while the (+) Button goes untouched.</li>
<li>B Button is now your shield.</li>
<li>In order to perform a Smash Attack for your regular attacks, use Buttons 1 and 2 together or for doing Smash Attack with your Special Attacks, like when dealing with Samus’s missiles you press the directions, left or right and 2 together.</li>
</ul>
<strong> And now a more in-depth look…</strong>
<p align="center"><strong>Direction Pad (D-Pad):</strong> <em>Move</em></p>
<p align="center"> <img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017b-l.jpg" alt="Moving Around" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">Press left or right to walk and press up to jump. Press left or right twice to run and press down for a short time to fall through platforms.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Button 2:</strong><strong> </strong><em>Basic (Standard) Moves </em></p>
<p align="center"> <img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017c-l.jpg" alt="Standard Attacks" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center"> Just press Button 2 for a standard attack. Press it while pressing a direction on the D-Pad for a stronger attack. As mentioned above one can perform a Smash Attack for your Basic (Standard) Moves by pressing 1 &amp; 2 together. This seems to me like this might be faster than flicking the control stick on a GameCube controller, similar to C-Stick usage.</p>
<p align="center"> <strong>Button 1:</strong> <em>Special Moves</em></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017d-l.jpg" alt="Burn baby, burn!" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">As before you have four Special moves in the game; neutral, left or right, up, and down.</p>
<p align="center">&nbsp;</p>
<p align="center"><strong>B Button:</strong> <em>Shield</em></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic06_071004a-l.jpg" alt="Shield Samus, Shield!" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">It might take some getting used to, but if you can reach your finger back there, you might just keep yourself from getting pummeled. The same concepts as Melee still apply, press B and down to dodge. Press B (Shield) and 2 (Standard Attack) to grab someone.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017e-l.jpg" alt="Mario manhandling a monkey..." align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">Of course one can just use the (-) Button to Grab, it’s essentially replacing the Z button on the GameCube controller.</p>

<p align="center"><strong>A Button:</strong><em> Taunt</em>
(Need I say more? Sakurai sure didn’t…)
<p align="center">&nbsp;</p>
<p align="center">And as most of us have found out through the videos available online, the Smash Ball is obtained by attacking it. You can’t just grab it like you would any other item.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017f-l.jpg" alt="Smash Ball" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">In order to perform your Final Smash it has been very clearly stated that you are not to hit any other button other than your Special Moves button, Button 1 in Wii-mote’s case, to activate your attack.</p>
<p align="center">&nbsp;</p>
<p align="center">The control scheme is the same on all the control types.</p>
And just a reminder for those in the LA area, October 18 (that’s tomorrow), the E for All (Entertainment For All Expo) in Los Angeles, California will be taking place. Your chance to play Brawl will be available then. It will be available for play with the Wii Remote. Though, based on his comments, one could be led to believe that will be the only option for the demo.
<p align="left">“No need for concern—I bet you can play it quite smoothly and simply…maybe. How about a little mental training before the time comes when you actually control it?”</p>

They still haven't mentioned tilt attacks...

Maybe if you press D-pad and hold it for a bit, then press 2 you can do one?

I wonder if the Classic Controller can also use the Control Pad for movement. The Wii Remote is capable of doing that, plus it can be easier than always having to use the Control Stick to move all the time.

well this scheme helps people with wii motes but no nunchucks/classic controller

To anyone who has a wii at the moment, is the B button easy to press in that position? It doesn't look like it

I wish but I live in the east-side of the U.S.

The Wii-mote controls are interesting. Maybe I'll use that sometime.

It's easy to press to me, but I still think I'm going to stick to the gamecube controller. Playing with a dpad might be interesting and fairly functional but it would take some getting used to.

I would personally swap taunt with the B button. I mean I won't be taunting to often.
That's exactly what I would do.

Double-tapping the arrow pad to dash, though... if you played a fast character like Fox and always did dash combos, that would be so hard to get used to.

Kind of sucks this is the control scheme they will be using at E for all. I think they want us to not be able to test all the advanced techs by giving us an awkward control scheme. Dash dancing will be hella hard with the double tap to test.

well the control scheme looks like something I can deal with but I much rather use the Gamecube controller instead, Gamecube Controller FTW!!!!

The controls look a little... difficult on the wii mote, but I will still try it out anyways just to see what it's like.

...I will probably still play with the GC controller though. XD

Why wouldn't they make shielding the A button...it's much easier to press than B. Who spends that much time taunting anyway?...unless you're Luigi of course!

So will they only have wii motes for E for all? no classics? no BYOC? dang, that sounds like they are trying to keep us from testing the advanced techs

Did anybody not know this already? lol.

B button works fine for shielding. I went and played with a remote ...it's easy to press. In fact, it might be hard to NOT press all the time for some people. It's kind of right where my index finger naturally goes when I hold the controller. If I ever use this control scheme, the only change I might do would be swap A and minus.

What?? How do you plan on rolling/sidestepping/air dodging? Your left thumb can only do so many things at once. lol

this really is the most limited control scheme but i think sakurai is emphasising it because its the basic wii controller...and this game should be fully functional with it. He just wants to shwo that it can be used and used well. obviously the gamecube controller is going to be ideal for most of us since we're so used to it.

for myself this wii remote is going to be somewhat useless.

i;m a peach player....how the hell can i instant float with the wiimote....i can't

so i need a jump button---and also i think most of us would prefer the fluidity of an anolog stick.

i;ve been thinking about how the wiimote and nunchuck combo would work ,and i really think that could be second best.

right now the b and z buttons could go either way in my mind

i would prefer to have my sheild in my right hand at the b trigger which would make sheild grabbing feel sweet, but the z button on the nunchuck might not feel so great as the special attack button----so they could be flipped.

Here's my idea---with the wii buttons on the right = the original gamecube buttons on the left

A=attack
B=sheild or special
Z=sheild or special
DDirection=Jump (would be easy to press because of it;s proximity to the A button)
C=grab/throw/attack like the z button in melee (it;s in an awkward place as usual lol)

Also i was thinking maybe the + (plus button not directional pad) could be used for yor special attack. With the tip of your thumb on the a button the + button is not so hard to press. Tho the - button would be out of the question.

I;m right to assume that all the controllers are going to be customizable yes?

cause then there are really so many things we could do....

ideally we need a configuratoin where all the essentials are easy to reach

i think my idea might work

i'd love to hear other's ideas for the wiimote-nunchuck combo

:)

haha scratch what i said...

this is another maybe better idea for the wiimote/nunchuck combo:

A=attack
- = special
Z =sheild
+= throw/grab/attack like the z button for gamecube
B=jump
Direction Pad= Taunts

haha god there are so many great combinations we could do!

this one feels pretty intuiticve to me...essepecially having the - = special, it;s the same movemenet from A to B on the gamecube controller

+ would also work as jump instead and then make the b trigger = throw/grab/attack

tell me what you guys think

Well, you do realize that the controls will be customizable in the final version, right?

really where did u hear that????:confused:
A video with Nate showing off the Classic Controller, I think is where it was. I believe he said the d-pad on the Classic Controller is taunts.

The Remote by itself won't be all that good, as the buttons are very limited. They did ok with what they had (jump prolly isn't + as I think that's the pause button).

First off... B for shield. Yeah, it's awkward, but where else you gonna put it? If you put it on A, you'll have a hell of a time rolling/spot dodging as your thumb would be for both buttons.

In fact, that's why A is taunt... pretty much every other button you'd want to be able to access while also having your fingers on the d-pad so you can move. That includes grabs. Think of reaching with your right hand for the - button to grab, not your left (running grab).

The 1 and 2 buttons are normal and special attack as they seem to fit together. That's about the only thing I can think of that you could probably swap (special attack with shield) and still keep the control scheme fairly playable.

Shield is too vital to put on - (or +) and as I mentioned, it be hard to roll if it was A. That leaves 1, 2, and B. Kinda depends on your preference there. Also, if you put shield and normal attack right next to each other, you can shield grab just by rolling your finger onto the second button.

The lack of a jump button does suck, though. :( Heck, I'd swap taunt for it.... hmm... then I'd prolly end up putting it on - (which would make running grabs hard) or A (which makes move and jump a tad harder... though depending on DI you might be able to make it work).

Every Wii comes with a Nunchuk... but they prolly made this control scheme for multiplayer, since not everyone buys Nunchuks for all of their extra Remotes. Given what they had to work with, they didn't do half bad. Still awkward to play with, compared to the other types though.
