People are afraid of what they do not know. Therefor anything random they will shunt away. All example given against item uses the same logic, the fact that with items on some how there will be a handicap.. randomness doesn't mean handicap, heck do you even know what your opponent is gonna do...

When you play co-op does it requires two player every stage? Like the stage where Pit falls down from the sky I don't see how they could include another character.. but it'd be lame if they didn't, it wouldn't be Co-Op : / Does anyone know?
