Don't worry, the majority of the people there are really good and would make great team members.
There are also some character restraints for the tourney I forgot to mention (though FMOI mentioned he might not have them if enough people don't want them). He said that everyone must use a different character. That or everyone must use the same character. The details are kinda fuzzy, but they should be somewhere in his thread

I'll try to explain it as best I can.
Everyone makes a team of 4 people and they all fight to reach the top and win.
You can either work together or work against your team, depending on how you are. In the tourney you can switch around your team mates to try and better your chances of someone from your team winning the tourney. The person thats wins the tourney wins Wii points for the entire team.
These are the basic rules, there are more that go more into detail but you'll have to look them up or ask FMOI himself
