How to deal with spam

Introduction
We all hate spammers (unless you are one) because they use the same move over and over again and it's embarrassing and annoying. Most of us always feel ashamed by losing to spam because we tried and the spammers don't. But there are many simple ways to deal with spam. I will talk about spam from Smash 64 to Sm4sh.

Fox lasers
The reason some people use Fox's lasers to spam is because you can rapidly shoot them and it's basically quick damage if you constantly get hit by it. But it's weakness is that it has no hitstun. Reflecting is not a good option for this kind of spam since the lasers are fast and some lasers will still hit you. Here are some ways to deal with this kind of spam:
  • Crouching: Certain characters can crouch under Fox's lasers due to their crouching animation having a small hitbox going right under Fox's lasers. Kirby, Wii Fit Trainer, Jigglypuff, and Mr. Game & Watch can crouch under these lasers. But what if you main characters that can't crouch under the lasers? There are other ways listed below.
  • Charging to Fox: If your character you main is fast (such as Sheik, Sonic, Captain Falcon, etc.) you could try to run to him and attempt to attack him since his lasers do no hitstun. You may take some damage but it does stop Fox's from spamming for a while.
  • Absorbing: If you main Ness or Lucas your down B can absord Fox's lasers because the lasers are energy projectiles and Ness and Lucas's down B can heal them if they absorb any energy projectiles. This makes Fox's lasers less effective.
  • Standing still as Link/ToonLink/Young Link: If you main Link or Toon Link you can stand still and block these projectiles. (This doesn't work very well in Melee and I do not know if it works on Smash 64 since I don't have Smash 64)
Falco lasers
Falco's lasers are like Fox's lasers except they shoot slower. do more damage, and cause hitstun. Reflecting is also a bad option since you may still get hit by these lasers even if you od reflect. All of the options that work with Fox's lasers work but there is also another option that can also work with Falco's Lasers but not Fox's lasers:
  • Power Shielding: Power Shielding is blocking a projectile with our shield in the first few frames and makes the move do no shield damage. This does not work with Fos'x lasers but does work with Falco's lasers because Fox's lasers can fire rapidly and Falco's lasers don't fire rapidly.
ZZS lasers
ZSS (Zero Suit Samus) spammers use their lasers to stun you mainly to do a combo on you or to kill you with a strong move if you're at a high percent. All of the options I previously mentioned work but there are 3 other options that work:
  • Reflecting: Various characters have moves that can reflect projectiles (such as Mario's Cape, Ness's Forward Smash, etc.)
  • Staying away from a distance: You could also be far away from ZSS since the lasers cannot travel as far as Fox's and Falco's lasers even if it's fully charged.
  • Pocket: Villager's Pocket can take a projectile and use it against them. However if you do not use the projectile you just pocket for 30 seconds you will not be able to use it and will be able to use Pocket for another projectile.
PK Fire
Ness/Lucas spammers will always use PK Fire to try to beat you. You can try to stay away from Ness or Lucas to not get hit by the PK Fire. You can get in midair to attack from above to at least do some damage to him. Reflecting, Absorbing, Villager's Pocket, and other options will work against these kind of spammers as well.
Duck Hunt
Duck Hunt is the most annoying type of spammer in the Super Smash Bros. games. But there are some ways to deal with his spam:
  • Trick Shot: You can use Duck Hunt's Trick Shot against him by knocking the can to him.
  • Clay Shooting: While the Clay Frisbee can go over you, crouching is not a good idea since Duck Hunt can summon shots around the Clay Frisbee that will still hit you if you crouch. But once it lands on the ground, it will no longer move. But don't go near it even if it is on the ground because he can still summon gun shots around the Frisbee. The only way to avoid the Clay Frisbee is to not go near it.
  • Wild Gunman: Wild Gunmen can't shoot too far and you can just get out of the area the bullet will hit you by jumoing (and maybe crouching).
Samus
Samus is also another common spammer normally using Charge Shot and her missles. Every option I've mentioned (except for staying out of the way) work's effectively against these spammers. If Samus attempts to charge her Charge Shot then try to go after her (and try not to get hit) to either prevent her from charging her attack or to hit her so that she has to start over charging her Charge Shot. If she dodge rolls (which will happen 99% of the time) then predict where she will roll and attack. Shielding is not a good option against a fully charged Charge Shot since it does massive shield damage (unless you Power Shield). Also a fully charged Charge Shot cannot be ducked under no matter how low your character can crouch due to the fully charged Charge Shot covering the ground. Samus has 2 types of missiles: The normal ones which are red and go after you for a short period and the super missiles which are green and go in a straight direction. The normal missiles can be shielded or/and pocketed. The super missiles can be avoided by shielding, reflecting, pocketing, and simply jumping over it.
Link/Toon Link
Another common spammer. These spammers us their 3 projectiles to try to win. You could try to jump over the projectiles (I do it all the time. Probably works better with Kirby and Jigglypuff since they have 5 jumps while over characters have 2 - 3 jumps). Reflecting may work against them.
Sonic
Sonic spammers are known to be annoying due to Sonic's speed and normally use Side and Down B a lot. Some attacks can beat Sonic's Side and Down B such as Kirby's inhale and Bowser Jr.'s Clown Kart Dash.
Megaman
Megaman if FULL of projectiles. Heck, even his Forward Smash is a projectile. But Megaman spammers will use jab, Neutral B, and Side B a lot. Reflecting works well with Megaman's Side and Neutral B but not jab.
Mewtwo's Shadow Ball and Lucario's Aura Sphere
Mewtwo and Lucario also have a projectile that can be charged like Samus's Charge Shot. Spammers who use these characters will attempt to use these moves a lot. So basically you deal with these spammers the same way you deal with Samus's charge Shot.
Fireballs (and Megavitamin)
Some people might play as Mario, Luigi, or Dr. Mario to spam Neutral B at you. All of the options I've previously mentioned will work but staying out of the way so the projectile won't hit you will stop them from spamming it.
Villager
Villager spammers use Fairs (forward air), Bairs (back air), and Side B a lot. Villager's Fair and Bair is hard to deal with and the best way to deal with them is airdodging and shielding. Side B can be reflected, jumped over, shielded, and any other method I've mentioned previously.
Kirby
There are 3 types of Kirby Spammers:
  • Up B spammers
  • Stoners (the ones who spam Down B. They aren't really called stoners I just like calling these kind of spammers that)
  • Side B spammers
Up B spammers are easy to deal with. Just dodge roll behind them and attack.

Down B spammers (call them stoners if you want) are a little harder to deal with. They go as high as they can and try to go above you and use down B to either break your shield or do damage. If they do use Down B at you either attack them after they get out of their stone form or grab them if they stay still on their stone form.

Side B spammers depend on the game. In Brawl and Melee (there were no Side Specials in Smash 64) Kirby swings his hammer and it isn't chargeable. Shield or dodge roll right when you see Kirby in his Side B animation (when he's about to swing his hammer). In Sm4sh his Side B is chargeable. The Sm4sh Side B Kirby spammers charge their hammers and wait until they get close enough. Since Kirby is much slower while charging you can jump over Kirby to attack from above (most likely Kirby will release the attack just to try to shield. If that happens, either you hit him successfully or he blocks it with a shield.)

Little Mac
Little Mac spammers usually spam smash attacks and side B. Some Little Mac spammers and dumb and don't know that Little Mac's side B can lead to an SD (self-destruct) near the ledge since it leaves Little Mac helpless. If you notice the Little Mac player uses Side B a lot go near to the edge to make him fell to his death (it doesn't matter if you shield or get hit he still will fall off the edge). Little Macs who spam Smash Attacks are harder to deal with since they're fast and have super armor during the attack animation. Try not to get to close to Little Mac when he tries to use Smash Attacks.
Pikachu
Pikachu spammers will either use Thunder or Thunder Jolt. Thunder spammers are used often because it has high knockback (and in Brawl it has invincibility frames.) Stay away from Pikachu when he uses Thunder. Pikachu can be punished if he uses Thunder but it may lead to you getting hurt as well. Thunder Jolt is also spammed a lot mainly because it's a projectile. You can jump of it, reflect it, pocket it, or use any method I've mentioned previously againt it.
Ike
Ike spammers use Side B. All you have to do is shield once he releases his side B (since it is chargeable) and punish after you block it with your shield. A projectile may disrupt the attack when he charges it or releases the attack.
Pit/Dark Pit
Pit's/Dark Pit's Side B is strong and is why people use it to spam with. Projectiles do not work against it since it can reflect projectiles. The best way to deal with it is to block and then punish it with a smash attack.
Wario's Bike
Some Wario players spam Wario's Bike to run over you and deal some damage. You can attempt to attack Wario when he's on his bike which forces him to fall off of his bike. Wario can jump off of his bike to prevent himself from getting hit (either way this stops the spam for a while.)

There may be more types of spammers I haven't mentioned due to either I've never encountered these spammers of I simply forgot about them. Notify me if I forgot to add a type of spammer to deal with.

R.O.B.
The bane of all humanity, was forgotton...
#Meta Knight not counted
A friend of mine does Wario and R.O.B. *we play SSBB, as we quit SSB4* and his R.O.B. is vicious, as he will set up the Camp Fire and start spamming the Lazer and the Top (Gyro) from the other side of the stage until you are in killing percets, he will then Nair you and instantly kill you. This is particularly annoying because R.O.B. 's lazer and top charge much faster, are far more powerful, and travel further in Brawl (the same goes for the Nair).

Apart from R.O.B.'s absence, it is a Good guide over all, everything was proporly explained, focused, and well written in detail. It also covers almost every kind of spam, which is appreciated.
mmmmm i think you are missing ROB, you have to deal with the gyro and lasers spam, sometimes it's pretty hard to approach
I need help with Lucina and Marth spamming. My 2 sisters, Both respectivly main these characters. But the kirby and Wario spamming part REALY helped.
