With an improved online structure, the possible return of combos, and Nintendo hosting their first ever Tournament, It's looking good so far that this may finally be a game that can be played on a competitive level, maybe not Melee level but a huge step up from Brawl. Anyone else think so? And are there any pro players out there who are thinking of making a transition to this game or playing along side Melee? I'm certainly going to get serious in this game and even be #1!

I cant cast a vote yet because i'm on the fence. I'm really nervous there are not going to be combos because from what ive seen most character bat enemies away far distances and combine that with no hitstun and what you have is Brawl 2

It is hard to tell at this point, especially since most footage we've seen so far is probably planned gameplay.

If nintendo is willing to host a tournament at E3 of all times it's at least a sign that they're confident that it's a game meant just as much for us and not just for casuals

I've never been competitive with any of the Smash games. I've played with friends who are but I've never competed myself. However it looks like this game is putting a huge focus on the competitive aspect and so far it looks like they've done a great job. It might just be enough to get me to go to competitions with my buddies. I'm going to main Sonic so frickin' hard.

I think it might be. It definitely looks promising.

Poll is flawed and very hard to answer, I'm gonna give it a shot but it might suck like Brawl did.

As long as I can play the game, rather than the matchup, then yes. Brawl sucked because its matches were mostly determined by how many exploits you could use against your opponent. As a (former, I don't play Brawl anymore) Wolf main, I knew this from experience. I played a Wario and wouldn't you know it, I could barely get a hit in without Blaster camping because of Wario's stupid Dthrow chains.

So yeah if chaingrabs, chainthrows, grab release combos and the like aren't present, as well as if camping is kept to a sensible level *looks at Meta Knight*, I can see Smash 4 being a competitive success. Sure it may not end up as big or as hype as Melee, but it would at least have a committed following.

I don't think it will have as big of a competitive scene as Melee has, but I think it'll be bigger than brawls, seeing how it seems to bring back the speed that everyone from melee was looking for in brawl. We'll just haft to wait and see.

...You're really behind on the curve. Anyway, here you go.
I'm ahead of the curve if you think any meaningful hitsun was shown in the Smash Direct. Instead what they confirmed is that this is brawl 2, and characters might have one or two moves that will cause stun which will give characters very very few combo. Most of the game will be stringing together hits till they can set up one of the two or maybe 3 combos that are possible. It will be like ZSS where the only thing she do to hitstun is downsmash and neutral B. You can do one or two combos from this, but you cant air combo u airs like you can in smash 64 or melee and that us what scares me.

Both Brawl and Melee share the same hitstun values (and Smash 4 will most likely do so). If there's just very few combos in Brawl it's not because of hitstun lack, but because of hitstun cancel.

And in the smash direct there's no hitstun cancel (in the gameplay analysis thread is well explained.). So there will be combo potential for sure.

The poll should allow me to vote for exclusive Smash 4 play and to like turtles.

I've been reviewing existing footage we got of the game so far, while air dodging is defiantly making a return, it doesn't seem to function the same way as it did in Brawl.

I'm not the most technically minded so correct me if I'm wrong, but the way hit stun worked in Melee was that as damage increased, the time you where stunned increased proportionally. The higher your percent, the longer you're stunned opening to combos. Brawl was different in that there was always a set number of frames you where actually stunned, which is 13 frames if that's correct, after that no matter what your percentage is or trajectory you could air dodge, allowing players to easily escape any combo strings.
(I'm going off the Smash wiki btw)

Air dodging is making a return but it looks like the hit stun function from melee is returning as well. The result is going to be a game that has a far different combo game than Melee or 64 had, but it'll be there never the less.

@ Toma Toma Yes there is already a thread on this, I hadn't realized it existed till after I made it. Xermo posted a link to it earlier in the discussion for those who want to read on that.
