It is extremely hard for me to wavedash then instantly downtilt. What mostly happens for me is I will just down smash or dash attack instead.
Also have problems doing tilts in general. Any tips?

When you wavedash, you make your character enter their land fall special animation which lasts 10 frames. Knowing the timing might help

How are you mashing left/right if you're trying to hold the control stick down?

When you wavedash, your controls tick should be pointed downward anyways. You could just turn it so that it's directly down. I think you might be resetting its position to neutral after you wavedash

For tilts in general, try holding a direction only halfway. Do it by moving the stick a bit slowly. Don't worry about the delay at 1st

So after wavedash have the joystick back to neutral? Or just hold it down after wavedashing?

The way I do tilts is by holding the direction I want to do the tilt during the end lag of something else (as an example, holding up after a down throw with Link so I can do an up-tilt right after). It is no different with wave dashes (except 10 frames can feel a little tight). As soon as you have pressed R or L for the air dodge, you can do whatever you want with the stick. Just move it to the direction for the tilt you want while you are sliding.

Try splitting it into using both techniques one at a time. Then slowly join them together so it becomes faster. Knowing the lag time is useful for getting them precisely.

Don't do more than you already need to. WD -> d-tilt you are supposedly already holding down. You don't need to move the stick all the way down, but I would make sure you are more down than side. You are down smashing most likely because you are returning your stick into neutral which you do not have to do. Another example for the sake of examples is shine -> WD. Since shine requires a down input, I would keep the stick downwards instead of going back to neutral before the WD. It is good to practice clean inputs, but also be efficient with it.

Regarding tilts, some have already said, you can practice tilting the stick halfway so you don't trigger a dash or a smash attack. I still press down all the way for d-tilts, though I just don't press A at the same time. If you are in the middle of an action, such as a throw like @ SAUS SAUS said or a jab, you can smash the stick all the way because there will be no action due to you being busy.
