I had this idea while I was assembling a picture of my roster with Paint. It was really tedious and taking too long to just make one. And of course, it was even more tedious to edit a picture after having saved it, by needing to place all of the separate icons side by side without leaving any space between them, and re-sizing the roster's picture everytime. So here we are now.

I have some experience in software programming, so I've used my skills to create a program in which anyone can create several rosters quite rapidly and intuitively. With the SSB Roster Maker, you can also save your rosters as image files on your computer, with the same quality as you would obtain in Paint or any other image editors.

Here is what you must do to start using the Roster Maker right now:
  1. Download the program's archive from the link below.
  2. Extract the archive in a directory of your choice on your computer. (You can use 7-Zip to manipulate archives.)
  3. Start the software by double clicking on the file named "SSB Roster Maker.exe" or the file "SSB_Roster_Maker.jar", the latter also being the file Mac or Linux users must use.
Here is a link to download the Super Smash Bros. Roster Maker (version 11.0).

For users who already have a previous version of the Roster Maker and want to keep their data of custom rosters they created and custom characters they added, you must do the following steps :
  1. Extract the archive of the version 11.0 somewhere on your computer.
  2. Replace the file named "rosterMaker.dat" located in the "utils" folder with your old one.
  3. (Optional step) Copy the custom icons you want to keep to the new "icons" folder. If you don't remember which custom icons you added, you can always sort the files in the directory by date. (The last icon file added to the version 10.0 was: "William B.J. Blazkowicz.png "). I recommend not to overwrite existing icons when moving/copying.
  4. (Optional step) Copy or move your roster images from your old "rosters" folder to the new one.
  5. Start up the software by double clicking on the "exe" or "jar" file.
  6. Press the following three keys on your keyboard at the same time: CTRL + SHIFT + =. A confirmation window should appear.
  7. Click "Yes" to perform the update. (The update might take a couple of minutes).
  8. If everything goes well, enjoy the new version! (Otherwise you can message me.)

You might want to know that the program is made in Java, so there could potentially be some problems depending on the version you currently have. You will need at least the version 8 of Java to use the Roster Maker. Here is a link to the Java download page in case you need it.

Here is a screen capture of the program's interface (in version 11.0):

And here is an example of an image produced by saving the file of your roster with colored borders (by clicking on the "Save image" button):

And without colored borders:

I then saved this roster by pressing the "Custom rosters" button and then selecting the save option, and closed the Roster Maker.

Later on, I decided to make a few changes to my roster, so I simply started the Roster Maker again, and then by pressing the "Custom rosters" button again, selecting the roster I saved and loading it, my previously saved roster was uploaded onto the grid.

You can even use (and create!) your own character icons to use in the Roster Maker to create a roster with all the characters you want! So if there is a character that you want to use that isn't present in the Roster Maker, you can make an icon for it yourself using the "Create an icon" function, or you can simply make a request in this thread.

I also want to mention that while I did make a lot of the character icons, there are several other people who contributed to them. The full list of credits can be found in the "About" window.

All instructions are included in a file called "Instructions", which is located in the "utils" folder within the archive of the Roster Maker.

List of the main new features in version 11.0:
  • Added a button named "Ultimate" to the main window. As its name implies, it will load the character roster for the game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Only the confirmed characters as of the release of this version of the Roster Maker are present in it by default. However, this roster can be modified as you desire and saved in the database.
  • Added a new attribute named "role" to all characters. This will display the main role a character has attained in current and past games. Some possibilities include: "Playable Character", "Assist Trophy", "Stage", "Item" and more. This attribute can be modified in the window for editing a character's attributes.
  • Added a drop-down list component below the list of characters. This will add the possibility to sort the characters by roles.
  • Modified the status attribute of all characters so they now have four possible states: "Confirmed", "Unconfirmed", "Disconfirmed" and "None". Also updated all things referencing the status.
  • Added the "Assist Trophies Ultimate" roster to the list of custom rosters. It can be accessed by clicking the "Custom rosters" button.
  • Added the "Poké Ball Pokémon Ultimate" roster to the list of custom rosters. It can be accessed by clicking the "Custom rosters" button.
  • Added the "Stages Ultimate" roster to the list of custom rosters. It can be accessed by clicking the "Custom rosters" button.
  • Added a button named "Clean" in the Settings window. This can be used to perform a cleanup that will delete broken characters, for which no icons can be found.
  • Modified the options when saving an image of a roster so you can now choose to save it with black borders.
  • 165 new icons added.
  • Rosters update.
  • Various bug fixes.
List of the main new features in version 10.0:
  • You can now create your own icons with the "Create an icon" function! This option is located in the "File" menu and can be also be accessed by pressing "F2". It's quite simple to use, but for detailed instructions, please look at the "Instructions" file. Some quick tips:
    • It works best when you use images with transparent backgrounds. (You can use something like Paint.NET to remove the background).
    • After selecting an image, you will get better results if you draw a perfect square on the image. The color of the drawn rectangle will change slightly when width and height are the exact same. You can also look at the two counters at the bottom left that display the current dimensions.
    • There are two text fields you must write in next:
      • The first field is used to display the name you want on the icon. I recommend writing it in all caps, unless the name you want doesn't fit in. Some letters like the "C" and the "E" use less space when written in lower case. (For advanced users, you can even take a look inside the "\utils\app_icons\letters\" folder to add or edit the characters used!)
      • The other field is used to enter the full character name. It's the one that will be used and saved in the software, and what you will see in the list of characters. To add a new icon to an already existing character, simply enter its exact name in that field and when you go to the next window, it will load the associated character info. (The name you enter in that field is also used for the file name it creates in the "\icons\" folder).
  • 875 new icons added.
  • Rosters update.
  • Added the series: "Splatoon".
  • Added a new button named "Open roster images folder" to the "File" menu. This will simply open the location of the saved roster images on your computer for rapid access.
  • Various bug fixes.
For a complete list of all the changes, see the "Changelog" file located in the "utils" folder, included within the archive.

The popularity of the characters was partially based according to Shorts's various polls.

Note: If you want to post your roster images on forums, blogs and other places on the web, you must first upload them using media hosting websites such as https://imgur.com/ or http://photobucket.com/ .Or if the forum supports it, directly upload the image in the post.

Have suggestions for features or options you would like to see in the Roster Maker, report bugs or simply leave feedback? Or maybe you have some icons of your own that you would like me to add in future versions? Just mention them in a post in this thread, or contact me by another way, and I'll consider them!

You can also use this thread to post or link to icons you've made for the Roster Maker. If it looks decent enough, I might add the icon in a future version.

Here are the templates that you can use:

Here are some links to download more icons: (If you want me to add a link to icons you've made, just send me the link and I'll add your name here with the link in question).

Sw00t. Downloaded.
You didn't have the version 5.0? I uploaded it some time ago. I will try to finish the version 6.0 by the time we get some info in the next Nintendo Direct.

I think having a thread for the Roster Maker instead of only a blog will make it easier for people to stay up to date with the new versions.

There shouldn't be any problem with it, but it seems a lot of people are getting a warning of some sort. Make sure you click on the right "Download" button though, which is the green one that simply says "Download (12.26 MB)", and not on some ads. But if something should happen, please tell me immediately.

Awesome. Can't wait to waste hours on this.

One bug report, Ganondorf's icon should be of his Smash Brawl self.

Lol wait I already have this...
Yeah, this isn't a new version. The next one should have tons of new icons though.

Well, this isn't really a bug, but I can always change it. However there are some bugs related to the franchises that will be fixed in the next version.

It's easy to pick the characters but it's hard to make an aesthetically pleasing layout.

What do you mean? I added functions to insert and remove lines or columns, and another to insert and remove a single square. There are also sort options, which will be improved in the next version. But if you have any other idea that could improve the experience, just mention it, and I'll see what I can do. I'm always open to implement suggestions from the users.

I meant it's just a bit difficult to make a neat square and keep all the characters in the same series together. More a problem with me than the program.

When will you release version 6 and how many icons will be in it?
I plan on releasing it soon after the next Nintendo Direct. I haven't counted how many new icons there'll be, but something like a hundred and over.

Ah fine then, I guess I misunderstood what you were saying.

Nice, at this point though you should wait the reveal trailer. Maybe they'll announce some character you haven't already put in the roster maker, you'd never know lol

One (well 3) thing you could add in the next version, the captains from Pikmin 3 now their names have been revealed.

Yeah, depending on the info that is revealed, I'll add some things to the Roster Maker.

I'll try to add them, although they have no official artwork yet, it might be difficult. Nabbit and the new Mewtwo form will definitely be there though.

Well, this isn't really the place to show and discuss rosters, there are other threads for that, but anyway. But I must say the way you arranged it is kinda weird.

YAY! Thank you.
No problem. :)

I was looking at the very first version I did a little more than a year ago, and I was surprised by how very little there was. There was only about 300 icons and barely any advanced functions. It has evolved a lot since then, and now the next version is going to have over a thousand characters to choose from.

Hey Jakor, when you release the 6.0 version, will it include the 3-D pictures of Mega Man (the ones OnyxOblivion made)? I've been waiting for a long time for that.

Well, I'm not entirely sure which icons you're talking about, so if you could link them to me it would be a good start. ;)

Wow, that was fast. You only want the Mega Man icon? You know there is a way to add whatever icons you want to the Roster Maker. Just put them in the "images" folder and then use the "Add new character icons" function from the menu bar. But if you still want me to add it by default for whatever reason, then I have no problem with that.
Didn't know how to do that to be honest. I'll see if that works out.

Just want to tell everyone that the next version is coming along nicely. I think some of the new features are going to be particularly useful. ;)

If I may make a suggestion, could you have a Mewtwo and his new form as one character like Zelda/Sheik. It'd be very helpful.

You mean like having the two characters in the same pic? Yeah, I can add that. I'll also add one with just simply his alternate form.

I would just like to thank and commend you for all the work you've put into this program, Jakor. As a long-time user since the 1.0 edition, I've been continually pleased with each subsequent update, and I really appreciate how much time it saves me in making/editing my roster. Looking forward to the next version.

Thank you! I guess it also helps that I enjoy doing it. Only thing I don't like to be honest is adding lots of icons and having to search for some information for them. I understand it's not perfect though, as the program has been getting more complex, the number of bugs or problems has been increasing a bit, and people with lower screen resolutions seem to not being able to use it to its fullest. There's also the fact that I don't really know how to make an automatic updater for it, so it can be a bit of a pain having to constantly re-downloading it and with people needing to redo their rosters each time. :ohwell: But these are all things that I'm looking into.

And of course, I wouldn't have been able to do all of the icons on my own, so I must give special thanks to anyone who contributed to making icons for the Roster Maker, even though some haven't made it in. Oasis_S is especially awesome, as he was the one who did all the original icons that were in the versions 1 and 2, and did many others for the later versions too. He was the one who kinda inspired me to do this program. And I now have big thanks to give to Gibdo Knight, as he recently just made hundreds of icons for the Roster Maker and updated a lot of the old ones, as you will be able to see for yourself as they are now being fully integrated in the version 6.0.

Yes. I too would like to thank you Jakor. You work very hard and produce amazing results. I hope you stay around for a long time. :D
Thank you also! And I hope so too, but as long as I have access to a computer and the Internet I guess I'll continue to make it up to date and keep the users informed. I'm also aware that the hype for making rosters will kind of die down slowly as more characters are revealed for SSB4 to the time where the game is released.

Just want to mention that I will most likely release the version 6.0 tomorrow. I planned on releasing it today but I had a really busy day, so I unfortunately couldn't get some things done. However, I've made most of the last minute changes tuesday evening relating to the information we got out of the trailer in the Nintendo Direct. Here's hoping you're looking forward to it!

Don't worry, I'm not rushing it. ;) As for the icons, there'll be about 600 new ones, and most of the old icons have been updated to have a blue background, thanks to all the hard work Gibdo Knight put in them. :)

Functionality wise, there will be a couple of improvements and of course new things.
