Welcome to Elline DLC Support thread!

In case you don’t know who Elline is, she’s a paintbrush fairy who helps Kirby out in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, a spiritual successor to Kirby: Canvas Curse. Elline has the ability to turn into a paintbrush at will, and she’s the one who makes the Rainbow Ropes that Kirby can roll on. While she does have a supporting role, she’s essentially the most important character in the game, as she is responsible for all of Kirby’s in-game transformations (Tank, Submarine, and Rocket) and is the only reason he can complete his quest.

A Brief History
Elline has been in only one Kirby game: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. There, her best friend, Claycia, was possessed by a being called Dark Crafter, who sought to rob the entire Universe of its color. Dark Crafter, under the guise of Claycia, took over Seventopia, the world which Claycia and Elline had once peacefully co-ruled, and created seven worlds out of the color stolen from Planet Popstar. Dark Crafter’s eyes and ears, the Grab Hands, chased Elline to Popstar and stole the color. They almost captured Elline, but, thankfully, Waddle Dee and Kirby were nearby and chased them off. Elline convinced Kirby and Waddle Dee to help her defeat Claycia and restore the color to the Popstar. Kirby, the Waddle Dee crew and Elline traversed the 7 worlds Dark Crafter had created and ultimately put a stop to his antics.

Why Elline?
Despite the fact that she only appeared in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Elline had a major role in that game, and was in essence the most important character. Elline also has a lot to offer. In my hypothetical moveset I’ve created below, I interpreted her as a character designed to essentially control the match. When used properly, Elline would have the potential to force the opponent to play on her terms and control their movement. If Elline wants them to move out of an area, she would have that potential. If she wants them to switch to defensive or offensive, she would have be able to do that. However, that said, she would have weaker physical attacks than normal and have poorer defenses that most characters, so she would require a skilled player to keep the opponent at bay while racking up damage, and then go in for the kill once she’s racked up enough damage. Of course, her finishers would be few, though she would have at least one decent finisher.

What should give Elline higher priority than other Kirby characters, namely Bandana Dee?
Elline, despite not being one of the “main 4” and only appearing in one Kirby game, still has a lot going for her. Elline was by far the most important character in the one game she appeared in, and was actually the titular Rainbow Paintbrush in the Japanese version, and she can bring a lot stuff to the table in terms of uniqueness. For one thing, Elline is a girl. While I’m sure you’re probably sick of hearing this argument and probably consider it weak, it’s true that Smash is dominated by male characters, and having female presence is never a bad thing. However, besides that, Elline is a very technical character that has tons of potential, at least in my hypothetical moveset. She has a playstyle no Smash character has ever had before, one with a massive emphasis on stage and opponent control. Characters such as Melee Falco and Snake have touched on this before, but no character has had an entire moveset and playstyle dedicated to this concept. And that’s exactly what Elline is! Her entire moveset is about forcing your opponent to move and limiting their space with Rainbow-guided missiles and turrets. She’s a character that can pressure the opponent into decisions and control their movement, but is hindered by a subpar physical game, predictable recovery and light weight. Elline’s entire moveset is built around her Neutral Special, Rainbow Rope, and with it her options are virtually limitless. Now, don’t get me wrong, Bandana Dee is a really cool character, but Elline, in my opinion, has the potential to bring a never before seen playstyle and character to Smash, and one that would appeal to both casual and competitive players with its seeming simplicity. However, as explained above, her ability to pressure opponents and control the stage can make her fun for competitive players to use. Bandana Dee hasn’t shown that kind of potential to me, while Elline immediately jumped out to me as a unique character. Bringing uniqueness to cast is a very important aspect, and no other Kirby character has really showed this kind of potential to me. Additionally, Elline is very new character, which can be good for advertising and promoting Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, which has been shown to influence decisions such as the inclusion of Yoshi’s Wooly World, Roy’s inclusion in Melee, and even Greninja’s or possibly Shulk’s in SSB4. There is no such thing as “too new” in Smash. Finally, she is very unique visually, having a distinctive appearance and being made entirely out of clay. She may possibly use fewer frames per second in order to capture the feel of Claymation, just as Mr. Game & Watch does. This idea was used in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and it was received very positively by critics, so there’s no reason not to do it again!

What about Adeleine? These two are pretty similar, right? Why should Elline get in over her?
Well, they are similar in some regards. Both are very talented artists, but how they use their art is different. Adeleine brings her art to life, whereas Elline merely transfers her art from the canvas to Kirby’s body and then molds him accordingly. That brings up another key difference: Elline has an emphasis on clay art, possibly more than her paint art. Elline’s Rainbow Rope is completely made of clay, and she molds Kirby’s forms out of clay. Due to this key difference, as well as their difference in role and abilities, Elline’s hypothetical moveset that I have created uses very little painted art, and instead revolves around Kirby and the Rainbow Curse’s clay motif. Additionally, Elline and Adeleine obviously have very different appearances. That aside, the proposed moveset for Adeleine on the Adeleine Support thread does propose a similar concept, though not to the same extent. It proposes that Adeleine would be able to control the stage by summoning enemies and sending them off. Now, while this general concept is similar, it is not the same, especially because Adeleine’s playstyle does not revolve around stage control, instead focusing more the “Paint Charge” mechanic. Elline, on the other hand, could be considered a “gimmick” character, of sorts, heavily relying on one aspect of the game and being rather polarized. Because there are no character’s with playstyles remotely similar to either Adeleine’s or Elline’s hypothetical playstyles, they both bring very different things to the table. So different, in fact, that it’s hardly comparable. That said, while Elline lacks the recurring nature Adeleine, Elline, I would say, is more visually striking and unique, especially with her clay appearance. While Adeleine has the advantage of being a recurring and established character, Elline has the advantage of being fresh, new and good for any advertising purposes that Sakurai may have in mind. Please do not misunderstand me here. I am not trying to dis Adeleine or her proposed moveset. I am only trying to provide the best possible argument I can as to why I consider Elline to be the better pick. Once again, this is only my opinion and I am just trying to convince you to share it as respectfully as I can.

Stats-Weight: 79 (Rank: 45)
-Air Speed: 0.825 (Rank: 16)
-Falling Speed: Exact Numbers N/A (Rank: 45)
-Crawl: No
-Wall Jump: Yes
Brief Description: Elline constantly hovers slightly off the ground, though not enough to let any projectiles slip by. She additionally suffers from a smallish shield, which hinders her defense. Relying largely on stage control and pressure, Elline is rather weak up close and has few KO options. Additionally, her recovery, while lengthy, is quite predictable, with its only possible mix-up being her wall jump. Elline has a low weight, being on par with Pikachu, a high air speed on par with the likes of R.O.B., and a falling speed that’s on par with Luigi. She has no crawl and a reasonable crouch that can let smaller projectiles, such as Fox’s Blaster, slip by.
Neutral B-Rainbow Rope-Elline puts her hand out and a ball of pale yellow light appears. By inputting any direction, an identical ball of light appears, which Elline can move. As the second light moves, a rainbow trail is left between it and the first one, just like in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. The trail is set when either a particular length is drawn out, or by pressing B again. The maximum length of the Rainbow is quite long, and it cannot be destroyed by enemies. That said, it cannot damage enemies at all. There can be any amount of these onscreen at once, but they only last for an upward of roughly 10 seconds. They disappear from beginning to end while turning to pale yellows and pinks. Using this move in midair drastically lowers her falling speed and has very small ending lag, allowing it to be used in conjunction with her Up B for recovery. Getting hit while forming the Rainbow Rope causes the Rainbow to crumble and fail to form.

Neutral B (Custom 1)-Fast Rainbow-This version of Rainbow Rope simply makes Elline draw out the Rainbow faster, at about 1.3x the normal rate. However, the Rainbows only last roughly 7 seconds before disappearing.

Neutral B (Custom 2)-Slow Rainbow-This version of the move does not draw out the Rainbow quite as fast, about .7x the regular rate, but the Rainbow lasts longer once formed, at roughly 13 seconds compared to 10.

Over B-Clay Torpedo-Elline pulls out one of Sub Kirby’s pink torpedoes and drops it in front of her. The torpedo travels a small distance forward and does moderate damage and knockback. However, if this torpedo touches a Rainbow, it immediately attaches itself and follows it to the end. Once it reaches the end, it flies forward a small distance before dissipating. This move does not decay in damage based on distance, and does moderate damage and knockback throughout.

Over B (Custom 1)-Speedy Torpedo-This version of the torpedo travels faster than the regular Clay Torpedo, but it does less damage and knockback than normal, going from average-power to low-average power. These torpedoes are green as a visual indicator.

Over B (Custom 2)-Slugger Torpedo-This version of the Clay Torpedo travels slower than normal, but are more powerful, going from average-power for the regular torpedo, to high-average for the Super Torpedo. These torpedoes are yellow as a visual indicator.

Up B-Clay Rocket-Elline quickly morphs into a clay rocket akin to Rocket Kirby. She pauses for a moment before flying in the inputted direction, similar to Fire Fox, though it covers much less distance and has much less start-up. Elline does not damage foes during the brief pause at the beginning. Elline can cancel the rocket during the dash to avoid going into helpless, but she cannot airdodge or use any special move after cancelling. Hitting an enemy in this form does moderate damage and knockback. While normally a mediocre recovery move, if Elline touches a Rainbow at all while she is a rocket, she immediately begins following it somewhat quickly. This allows her to extend her recovery, though it does become predictable. Hitting an enemy while following the Rainbow does moderate damage and knockback, and she immediately exits rocket form upon reaching the end of the Rainbow. Cancelling Clay Rocket while following the Rainbow results in Elline turning back to normal, performing a brief, low-knockback spin with her hands, falling off the Rainbow, and entering her helpless state.

Up B (Custom 1)-Gondola Ride-This version of the move gives next to no recovery distance, and is designed to be used in conjunction with Rainbow. A direction can still be inputted, and Elline will still move in that direction, but the distance is so small that it is barely noticeable. However, instead of morphing into a rocket, if Elline touches a Rainbow, she immediately attaches a Clay Gondola. Touching an opponent does no damage whatsoever, but Elline traverse the Rainbow much faster than before. In addition, once you are attached to the Rainbow, there is no way to let go. Instead, Elline may attack with a low-damage, set-knockback dash by pressing the attack button while she is moving along the Rainbow. This move cannot recover on its own and makes her overall recovery much more predictable, but the major plus side is the ability to get around much faster.

Up B (Custom 2)-Super Rocket-This version of the move makes the rocket Elline turns into cover somewhat more distance on its own, as well as causing it to inflict more damage and knockback. However, Elline traverses any Rainbow she comes into contact with slower, decreasing her overall mobility. Additionally, cancelling this version of the move on the Rainbow simply causes her to spin normally and deal no damage, making this move bad for cancelling up close. As a visual indicator, the body of the rocket goes from pink for the normal rocket, to a vibrant violet for Super Rocket.

Down B-Clay Tank-Elline pulls out a Clay Tank and drops it down in front of her. After being dropped, the tank then proceeds to fire fair-powered clay bullets straight forward in rounds of three periodically, similar to a fusion of the Tank and Sub forms from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. There can be a maximum of three tanks onscreen at once, and each one has a unique color to distinguish it: The first Clay Tank is blue, the second tank is green, and the third tank is yellow. Clay tanks cannot be placed in midair, and will fall straight down when placed in midair. Any enemy who touches the tanks as they fall takes small damage and knockback. The tanks last about 10 seconds, and will crumble away once time runs out. If another tank is placed when three are active, then the move fails. Dropping a tank onto a Rainbow will cause the Clay Tank to mobilize and follow the Rainbow to the end at a somewhat fast rate. Once it reaches the end, it falls off and remains there. However, the tank will immediately fall off the Rainbow if it attempts to climb a hill too steep. The tank will do no damage while and will not fire at all when following the Rainbow; it only fires after landing. Additionally, the Clay Tanks can be destroyed by enemy attacks, and can sustain around 40% before they crumble.

Down B (Custom 1)-All-Terrain Tank-This version of Clay Tank is much more tolerant of elevation, and will follow Rainbow Ropes to their end, regardless of how much the terrain shifts. However, they travel slower than the regular Clay Tank.

Down B (Custom 2)-Anti-Air Tank-These tanks cover a much broader range with their bullets, as they will move their cannon in a fan shape as they fire, and they will additionally fire 5 bullets instead of 3. However, the clay bullets are weaker than the regular Clay Tanks’, and they cover less distance.

Final Smash-Mass Attack-Elline pulls out one of those Magic Duplicators from Purple Fortress and places it in front of her. Anyone who touches the Duplicator takes small damage and small set knockback that puts them in a forced trip position when they land. They stay like this for the remainder of the move’s start-up. Elline then jumps into the Duplicator and it works its magic. However, instead of just making two Ellines, it makes 10. The Duplicator promptly crumbles as the Ellines exit from it. All of the Ellines then jump on the trapped opponent(s) and partially disappear from view in the yellow clay cloud that appears from the ensuing mass attack. Once all of the Ellines have dealt a large amount of damage, they all combine into a single, giant Elline that performs a Star Dash, inflicting massive damage and knockback. Elline then returns to normal size.
Dash Attack-Elline spins in midair, similar to the Dash move from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

Jab-Elline swings her hair like a paintbrush up for the first hit, down for the second hit, and thrusts her head forward for the final hit.

Forward Tilt-Elline swings her hair from the foreground to the background.

Up Tilt-Elline arches her back and hits with her wings.

Down Tilt-Elline spins and hits low with her wings. Like most D-Tilts, it can trip opponents.

Forward Smash-Elline morphs into her paintbrush form and swings herself downward.

Down Smash-Elline morphs into her paintbrush form and does a 360 degree spin, hitting low on both sides.

Up Smash-Elline morphs into her paintbrush form and flips backward, hitting above herself.

Neutral Aerial-Elline spins and hits with her hands.

Forward Aerial-Elline does a head-butt forward.

Back Aerial-Elline thrusts her back out, hitting with her wings.

Down Aerial-Elline thrusts her body downward, hitting with her lower body, as she has no legs.

Up Aerial-Elline leans backward while flailing her arms, hitting above herself.

Clay Rocket Rainbow Cancel-Elline spins and hits with her hands.

Gondola Ride Rainbow Cancel-Elline and the gondola dash forward.

Super Rocket Rainbow Cancel-Elline spins normally, dealing no damage or knockback.
Pummel-Elline hits the opponent with her hair.

Forward Throw-Elline tosses the opponent up, morphs into her paintbrush form, and hits them like a baseball bat.

Back Throw-Elline places the opponent in one of those Clay Gondolas and flips backward in midair multiple times, building up speed. She then abruptly stops spinning and sends them flying.

Up Throw-Elline tosses the opponent up and then uses her hair as a spike and knocks them upward.

Down Throw-Elline tosses the opponent downward and then spins straight down, hitting them multiple times before sending them away, similar to what Kirby did during the Whispy Woods Boss Battles in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.
Get-Up Attack (Back)-Elline morphs into her paintbrush form and hits forward in an arc.

Get-Up Attack (Face)-Elline quickly flies in a very small, tight circle, hitting on both sides of her.

Get-Up Attack (Trip)-Elline gets up while clumsily hitting once in front and once behind her.

Ledge Attack-Elline pulls out a Clay Gondola and flips onto stage, which also flips the Gondola so that it hits in front of her.
Intro Animation-A Rainbow Rope forms and Elline rolls off of it in ball form. She then jumps off a little curve at the end and transforms into her regular shape.

Up Taunt-Her short version of the Kirby Dance. It has an accentuated wink at the end.

Side Taunt-Elline spins around and admires her wings as they glint in the sunlight.

Down Taunt-Elline puts her hands to her mouth and giggles a little.

Victory 1-Elline blows kisses out to the crowd and winks at the camera.

Victory 2-Elline flies in spiral upward and laughs.

Victory 3-Elline performs her full version of the Kirby Dance.

Idle Animation 1-Elline brushes her hair back with her hand.

Idle Animation 2-Elline puts her hand on her forehead and briefly scans the area.
So, if I’ve convinced you of Elline’s uniqueness and validity as a playable character, please feel free to drop a message here or join in on the discussion! If and when Elline garners enough supporters, I’ll start a Supporters’ list at the bottom of this post. Elline needs all the support she can get, and I’d love it if you’d like to hop on my boat and join the fun! Best wishes,
~U-Throw

You know what? I still prefer Adeleine, but anyway, I support.
Painting in Kirby needs to be represented, in any way; painter characters are a very recurring element.
Paint Roller, Ado/Adeleine, Drawcia, Paintra, and now Elline. There are lots of games with this concept inside, and in some of them it takes a major role.

Also, I appreciate very much the fact that you based it on/it was inspired by my moveset proposal!

Now I'll do some spoilers about Rainbow Paintbrush:
I think that Elline has the same ability of making drawings alive/real: at the end of the game, Elline creates throough drawings lots of apples for Kirby; Anyway, I think that Elline needs Claycia in order do make this; Claicia makes the shapes, Elline paints them, it's said in one of her diary's pages.

What I want to say is that, my second supported painter character is not Elline alone, but Claycia & Elline, in a similar way as Rosalina & Luma, or more simply like Duck Hunt Duo. I don't mention this in other threads for spoiler reasons, but that's what I think.

The best characters to represent painting in Kirby are Adeleine and Elline though, I'd be fine with any of them (I prefer Adeleine because I'm more fond to that character and because she's more classic, also I like her shy and calm personality, but I like Elline as well, and her "rainbow" personality lol).

Anyway your moveset is cool.

Let's see if Elline will appear again in future Kirby games; if she becomes recurring, she will be a very likely choice.

Thank you so much for the support! It really means a lot, especially coming from an Adeleine supporter. I thought you and I might be at odds, but I guess not, and that's great. I totally see what you're saying about why your prefer Adeleine, and I understand. I personally prefer Elline because I found her more charming, both visually and personality-wise. Also, I'm a huge fan of Rainbow Curse. However, it's all opinion. I respect your stance on the situation.

I really like your idea for Elline and Claycia as duo. It's very interesting, and it has tons of potential. I never thought about Elline fighting like that, but now that you've brought it up, I think that it'd be awesome! If you ever feel like posting a moveset or discussing this further, just stop by. Additionally, you can sign me up for supporting Adeleine. I support her, and you can expect to see me around the Adeleine support thread more often. I've lurked there before some, but I'll be posting and I'll try to get into the discussion there. See you around!

Thank you! I'll add you.
I don't post often in the Adeleine thread because there is not much activity, and often it happens that I post and nobody else does, so if I want to post again I should do a double post and I don't want to.
I recently made the 8th palette swap of Adeleine that's based on Elline.

When I'll have some time I'll probably do a moveset for them; I have spoiled the game on youtube (Rainbow Curse) because in Europe it comes out at May 8; I'd like to play the game first, in order to learn better what are the most iconic things of the two characters.

If we have a painter rep I prefer Drawcia she fits the role of villain AND female she also looks to have characters based on her like Claycia and her sister Paintra she also had a cameo in the rainbow curse but I dont think Adeliene,Elline,or Drawcia is likely
