when do you think this will release?

neogaf release date leak:

Yeah I wasn't really able to get any new information, sorry smash-bros :(

They did say that the target was a spring release though, which seems to confirm what the NoE dude let slip a few weeks back.

The person I was talking to is also not a "hardcore" gamer, so it's possible the they don't know that Rosalina has been revealed publicly, for example. We mostly talked about Nintendo corporate stuff.
NOE slip:
"For next spring two more big license games are also announced for our TV console with Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros."

nintendo says misquote:

"A Nintendo representative contacted VG247 to inform them of the misquote. We would like to clarify that the speculation about a Spring 2014 launch date for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U was the result of a misquotation in an interview," they said."

sakurai twitter comment:

http://wiiudaily.com/2013/12/smash-bros-release-date/

sakurai's new year resoultion:

"Masahiro Sakurai – Sora12

Key phrase: Completion

Resolution: I resolve to complete development on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and release it in 2014."

http://kotaku.com/more-2014-resolutions-from-japanese-game-developers-1490799636

miiverse:

"The new Super Smash Bros. games are expected to be released sometime in 2014. We're still working on beefing them up even more so please stay tuned."

Balancing interview:
“We’re at a stage where we’d like to release the new title as soon as possible, and offer something more enjoyable than ever.”

Eh, as long as it is in 2014 I'm fine, as a European I'm probably going to have to wait 'till Fall either way. I just want them to take their time and make the best game possibly, the game is obviously still in a state where basic things change as we see sometimes with the daily pictures, so I wouldn't expect it in Spring, especially since Sakurai himself went the way himself to stomp the rumor to the ground.

The release date for this game is a bit tough to estimate I think. We'll just have to wait for official confirmation.

On one hand, Nintendo is known for their consistency in delays and taking a very long time to complete games. Brawl is a prime example, having been thought to release sometime late in 2007 if I'm not mistaken, and ending up released on March 9th, 2008 (US and Canada), and mind you that was delayed again from February 10th, 2008. This weakness of Nintendo makes it very hard for some to believe it is coming in the spring, especially with Mario Kart 8 taking priority at that time.

On the other hand, Nintendo has Namco-Bandai helping out this time around. Larger teams = more and faster productions (most of the time, heh). Nintendo is also arguably racing the clock with their better releases since the first year of the Wii U wasn't exactly spectacular for them. Another factor that could support an earlier release date is that there may be less emphasis on cut-scenes and no stage construction to worry about for a story mode in SSB4 compared to Brawl, which had the SSE. SSE is believed by many to have been one of the more time consuming elements of Brawl for Nintendo to complete. Without it, Nintendo can focus their attention, and probably less energy overall, on balancing characters and thinking about mechanics, which they seem to be well on their way on judging by some of the things Sakurai has been saying and the screenshots we've been getting.

Well, so far we've been seeing a new character, on average, every 24 days.

We're still waiting for Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Ice Climbers, Yoshi, Ness/Lucas, Pokemon rep and Wario, which are all probably going to be shown before launch, as well as any other newcomers we might see. So, we're probably getting another 8-10 more characters before launch.

So, provided the trend of character reveal frequency persists, and provided the 8-10 estimate is correct, it should be released somewhere between August and October.

Obviously, this is all conjecture, but my money's on... September 19th!

I wouldn't rely on updates as a timer or a countdown.

November is the month of heavy hitter titles, at least historically for Nintendo. I would guess the second or third weekend of November.

I don't think a very late spring/summer release is that far fetched as ppl think

- twice as big staff
- no story mode
- game looks done
- seem to be on the stage of beefing up the content
-wii u needs games yesterday

I think the games are going to release earlier than people think.

Last two interviews the OP posted make me believe that, along with many other things.

I think it's time that Nintendo announces a Smash Bros direct or something.

I said it in the other thread, and I still think it's the case. I agree that, from what we know, a spring release (probably late spring, like May) is the most likely outcome. Just think about Nintendo's general line-up; we know of 8 Wii U games in development that are either first party or collaborations with other companies: DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart, Hyrule Warriors, Yarn Yoshi, X, SMT x Fire Emblem, Zelda U, and smash. We know DK Tropical Freeze's release date as a February game, and we know Mario Kart is going to be a spring title. Hyrule Warriors is announced for Q2 in Japan so it could be spring too, but we're wrapping up first half of the year games. We've heard very little about X and even less about Yarn Yoshi or SMT x Fire Emblem; it seems odd to think both would be ready in the first half of this year. We have strong reason to believe that Zelda U will be the big holiday game given that they've already announced they're showing it for the first time at this year's E3 which is of course a summer event.

So where does that leave smash? Well, the first half of the year seems to want for titles more than the second half especially since currently unannounced titles are a lot more likely to be aimed at said second half whereas it would be very out of left field for anything bigger than a Wiiware title to come out in the first half that we don't already know about. Given that state of the Wii U, three major releases in the first half of the year wouldn't really be acceptable, and smash is by far the best candidate to be #4. Smash has been in development for a long time; even as a spring release, it will have had the longest development time of any smash bros title while it doesn't even have a SSE style mode to take up all that extra time. We had the "slip" by the NoE guy, and now we've had the most credible leak yet re-enforce it as targeted at spring. Given Brawl's delay and the backlash this received, Nintendo is likely hesitant to commit to a date until they can be quite sure they can hit it, but there is every reason to believe it's slated for the first half of this year.

There is a story mode, it just won't be like Brawl's.

Even when we do get an actual release date, Japan will likely get all the glory first. Japan got Brawl much sooner than North America, and seeing as Sakurai is a Japan resident, he'll prefer to focus on the Japanese gamers first before any other region; Japan got Kirby Triple Deluxe first after all.

Simply put, while Japan gets to play Smash 4, the other regions will likely still have to stick with playing Mario Kart 8 for another month, if not two months.

Maybe, maybe not. Pokemon is very similar in popularity to Smash Bros, and so X and Y were pushed for a worldwide release. Kirby is popular too, but I don't think triple deluxe matches up to the hype of a new Pokemon or Smash.

Like seriously, the release day of Pokemon X and Y was like "Pokemon Day." Everywhere I looked people were either playing it or going to get it. There were even a lot of cosplayers, including my Gamestop's employees.

I know they had some problems with the worldwide release (like early copies), but I'd only hope they try it again. The game would indefinitely be spoiled/ruined for us if it came out a month earlier in Japan, unless we completely disconnected ourselves from the internet...

My money's on late spring/early summer, so May or June! Nintendo can't drag their feet, the Wii U needs a big hit!

18 October, 2014. It will be the "Pokemon" of this year's launch schedule--before the last minute holiday game, but well after E3.

While a spring release would be a godsend, I see a summer/fall release being more realistic, with the release date being soon after e3 so basically everybody gets hyped.

I think it's pretty safe to say Mario Kart 8 will be out first. Gotta release something to clear the way. :p

I'm expecting it on Summer. I don't think we'll have to wait until winter. Early Fall I'd say is the furthest date. Of course this is only me making a wild guess.

I hope it's not the case this time... still remember the release difference between ntsc and pal... I couldn't wait so I imported the ntsc version and later bought the pal one.

While this was the case with Brawl, we've had games like A Link Between Worlds come to North America before Japan.

With the financial crisis that Nintendo is experiencing, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a release date soon for Smash Bros. in order to boost the Wii U's sales.

Well, Sakurai said it would launch this year, so my guess is December 31, 2014. :troll:
In all seriousness though, I think it will launch sometime around July.

I am thinking that we will get a release date soon. Maybe in the next Direct.

I estimate that we will get SSB4 either in the summer or winter. It depends how the pacing of character reveals and information goes in the next few months. I think that we will get the Wii U version before the 3DS version seeing as how we are getting more pics of the Wii U version than the 3DS version.
