The Big House 4 Tournament Format
October 4-5, 2014​

The tournament format at The Big House 4 is a bit different than usual, due to our unprecedented turnout and tight two-day schedule. Despite the logistical challenges, we’ve still managed to keep round robin pools in the format for Melee Singles and PM Singles, as well as provide an exciting platform for the final brackets on Sunday. I’ll explain further in this post.

Melee Singles
Phase 1

In: 576 players
Format: Round Robin Pools
64 round robin pools of 8-9 players each. Top 3 players in each pool advance.
Out: 192 players

Phase 2
In: 192 players
Format: Double-Elim Bracket Pools
8 bracket pools of 24 players each, with all first seeds from Phase 1 receiving a first-round bye. Players may be re-seeded from Phase 1. Top 4 players (2 in winners, 2 in losers) in each pool advance.
Out: 32 players (16 in winners, 16 in losers)

Phase 3
In: 32 players (16 in winners, 16 in losers)
Format: Double-Elim Bracket
1 straight bracket of 32 players, with 16 players starting in winners and 16 players starting in losers based on results from Phase 2. Players are not re-seeded from Phase 2. Top 8 players (4 in winners, 4 in losers) advance.
Out: 8 players (4 in winners, 4 in losers)

Phase 4
In: 8 players (4 in winners, 4 in losers)
Format: Double-Elim Bracket
1 straight bracket of 8 players (typically known as the “Top 8″), with 4 players starting in winners and 4 players starting in losers based on results from Phase 3. Players are not re-seeded from Phase 3. Play out until the end of the tournament.
Out: 1 player (winner)

Melee Doubles
Phase 1

In: 128 teams
Format: Double-Elim Bracket Pools
4 bracket pools of 32 teams each. Top 4 teams (2 teams in winners, 2 teams in losers) in each pool advance.
Out: 16 teams (8 in winners, 8 in losers)

Format: Double-Elim Bracket

What should I bring to the tournament?
Photo ID to verify your identity during check-in, and your own GameCube controller.

When is the best time for friendlies?
Friday 9pm-12am, Saturday 7pm-12am, Sunday 9am-7pm. There will be no friendlies Saturday 11am-7pm.

How many setups can I expect at the venue?
There will be at least 72 Melee setups and 40 PM setups for use in tourney, plus more friendly setups in the hallway outside the ballroom.
