Some people are just never satisfied despite what Sakurai does for us. I personally think he's going to be a nice addition to the cast despite being "another swordsman".

To me, cloud looks like a faster ike if Ike was also little mac. He's got so many tools and all of which look functionally different to his meta game than Ike's or Marth's. A projectile, a cancelable combo up b, a shulk enhancement like mode. But oh, he has a sword. Immedietly uninspired and exactly like Meta-Ike-Marth-Shulk-etc.

It's more of a tradition now to complain about too many swordsmen without rational reasoning at this point. I find it silly that people are calling him a cross copy between Shulk and Ike when he literally shares THREE moves with them, and two of them have completely different properties (the supposed "Ike fair" meteors people and the "Shulk nair" goes the complete opposite way(lol)). His Limit Break alone should be enough to differentiate him as a character, but people love to nitpick.

Ppl get mad with Cloud because "muh character didn't get in, this is completely **** and i h8 everything", but that's another topic.

Swordsmen tend to look the same to peasants because... well, they all use the sword, and their moveset is focused about that sword. A normal fighter can easily look really different althought they use the same parts of the body (:4zss::4sheik::4bowser::4falcon::4fox:), so they don't complain. But when they see :4marth:,:4robinm:,:4link:,:4shulk:,:4cloud:... "hurr durr that guy is using a sword, and the other guy too, this game is garbage"

I guess it's just easy to stereotype that "All characters using similar weapons will play the same".

Most of the people who complain about it hardly know anything about the characters in question though, nor do they care very much. They just automatically assume it's the case.

"Yet another swordfighter" is just a weak justification, really. In some cases it's because someone's favourite character has a "unique" fighting style, and we should totally have that character in the game instead of some generic sword-user, (for diversity's sake of course....) Honestly, thinking for a second that Meta Knight plays the same as Link, just because they both have swords, is a sure sign of madness.

The only reason we even have a perceived surplus of swordfighters is because of Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem is a fantasy RPG, so you can bet there will be a lot of swords. Plus, the most recognizable characters in FE are probably the lords (main characters), and main characters in a fantasy RPG that don't wield a legendary sword are the exception, not the rule. Also, Lucina was a "wasted character slot", even though she's basically an alt costume with a different sword and voice. And Roy (another FE clone) was added as DLC, even though plenty of people want Wolf back for the same reasons.

If you think about it, wouldn't it make sense to have a lot of sword-users in a mascot fighting game, if a lot of video-games involve swords?

It's because there are already 9 Sword fighters, I'm counting Mii Swordfighter, 11 counting Pit and Dark Pit because their melee attacks look like swords. 12 if you want to count Ganondorf (I'm not). Out of those characters, 3 play very similar, two play similar, 2 others play similar, and the rest are clos-ish. Most of them have a counter. It's not as much as you think but to some people it's like half the roster is a swordfighter. But overall it's because of the clone characters, Marth, Roy, Lucina being the biggest and Ike isn't much of a jump from that.

Nah that is quite literally this topic. Anyone who ever complains "oh look another anime swordfighter" is angry that their waifu and/or Waluigi didn't make it in over an actually relevant character.

It's because there are already 9 Sword fighters
So less than 1/10 of the roster is a swordsman.

Most of them have a counter.
Yeah that bugs me, too. Strangely enough, though, the counter is relevant to them. Real head scratcher, right?

I'll ignore the Marth/Roy thing because I know people base clones on how they look/how their moves look and not how they play (for some reason), but I am not about to let that Ike thing slide. If you honestly believe that Ike isn't a flying leap from Marth or Roy, perhaps you should pick up Ike. Tell me how that turns out for you.

Excuse me sir, first off you ignored some stuff in my post and secondly I meant more in the kinds of moves they do, not in how they play.

Ike does pretty good with his dancing blade knockoff, shield breaker, and feared fair to dair string that carried him in melee but has since been removed, huh?

We got swordfighters, fighters, magic based fighter, and shooters

Sure we got like 11 swordfighters. But Shulk, Link/Toon Link, Ike, Meta Knight, Robin, and Cloud are much different than any other swordfighters in the game.

In the end, people would still complain of having too many similar characters being confirmed despite not researching their movesets.

The biggest problem is not that they're all swordsmen, it's that a lot of them have very similar styles.
We have tons of swordsmen but the only one who is a more traditional swordsman (with a sword and shield) is Link, and half of his attacks don't even use his sword. Then you look at characters like Marth, Ike, Roy, Lucina, and Shulk and you'll find that despite the radical differences in their movesets, they all play the same way. Heck, if you look at all five of their FAirs, you'll see that they all look near identical.

So I can see why people get mad when another swordfighter is released.
However, they do still all have different movesets and are good characters, and I will take characters with good disjoints as opposed to characters without them in a game like this any day.
And unless you're Meta Knight, if you have a sword, you always have good disjoints.

I do kind of want to see them mix it up some, though. They have a few very reasonable fighters that weild weapons that aren''t swords (major examples being Reyn, Fiora, Shovel Knight, and any physical non swordfighter from Fire Emblem.) And I'd like to see them get more love.
I'd also love to see another hammer fighter as that weapon in particular gets some massive disjoints.

But like I said, I'm not comparing how they play but by how similar the moves look. If you want to use Ike's awesome melee combos so bad like it's the greatest thing ever then just play melee instead of randomly inserting them in a conversation that has nothing to do with Melee.

Ike's. Moves. Bear. No. Similarities. To. Marth's.

Reyn kind of uses a giant sword arm thing. Fiora uses two swords. I think it's safe to say that the only characters who get to be playable in Smash from Fire Emblem are the ones who you get game over when they die, and my apologies to Hector, that means only Ephraim is a viable character who doesn't use a sword.

I hear the talk but I don't see the proof to back it up. All I see is a picture of Link you made in MS Paint.
Alright, tell me. Which moves, other than the counter, does Ike share with Marth? Which ones?

People just hate swords because they want more guns. They're cowards, I tell you, they don't have the balls to fight up close.

On a serious note I don't think the swords are a problem since most of their users have unique traits. The only really glaringly similar characters are Marth/Lucina and Link/Toon Link. I don't count Pit and Dark Pit because they don't have swords. Those aren't swords. They're a different type of weapon and shouldn't just be clumped in with the rest.

His neural b is a charging move that can't be stored and actually shares a little more in common with Roy than Marth. The other moves are legitimately different. Although both Marth and Ike's up B rise super fast, Ike just waits a bit before joining. Off the topic of specials, his fsmash is a slower version of Marth's, dsmash is also just a slower version as well, possibly others as well but I don't know the moves off the top of my head.

So rising fast means a move is similar? Mario rises pretty fast with his up-b, is he similar to Marth too? Stop reaching.

Just because one move is similar doesn't mean that the character is the same. I said Ike is kinda like Marth in terms of moves and you are all acting like I think they are the same person.

Gameplay is the most important though. Ike is not Marth, is not Metaknight, Is not Shulk. Everyone who isn't a direct clone has their own gameplay style that lots of players love. If there was no distinct difference between Metaknight and Ike I'd be right on board on the anti-swordsman campaign. But Ike it a large heavy hiter, Marth is momentum controller, Meta-knight is a methodical speed demon, Shulk has his Sweet multi-form gimmick and Cloud Is a mixture of a lot of character's best qualities with all his moves being visual references.

Well I'm glad you agree Ike isn't all that similar to Marth then.
That's not what I said at all and you know it. Marth and Ike share multiple moves that have similar range (respectively), have similar animations, and both are from the same game universe so yeah I think Ike is somewhat a copy of Marth but in the same way Ganondorf is a copy of Captain Falcon.

People say Falco and Fox are clones but when you go into gameplay they are very different. When people talk of clones they talk about the look of the move not how it's used.

Marth doesn't apply to this thread. He actually wields a dagger that is enchanted with an illusion spell to make the blade seem longer than it is.

So does little Mac. So does Ness/Lucas. So does Diddy. Guess they're all Marth clones too.

Man, guess that means game&watch was secretly a marth clone. I knew fire was created from dolphin slash.

Wow how could I be so wrong. Thank you Xermo for opening my eyes. I see now that all characters are clones of Marth. No wonder why everyone complains about too many sword characters. They are the same as Marth. Mario? Marth with a fireball. Luigi? Marth with a green fireball. Donkey Kong? Marth wearing a tie. It's all so clear now. They need to make a character that has no ties to Marth what-so-ever.

I'm going to quit posting here because clearly I'm not enlightened enough to understand the complexities that go into the different Marth clones that this game has. I just thought Ike's moves just looked like Marth's but slower with a different side b but no I've never played Ike ever and I have no clue what I'm talking about. Besides this got way off topic and y'all are terrible at generalization.

The reaching to find similarity is real here, Mr. fantastic got nothing on you guys.
By that logic :4jigglypuff:,:4mario:,:4luigi:,:4fox:,:4drmario:,and :4falco: are similar just because they have a similar Dair
:4mario:,:4luigi:,:4drmario: and :4wario2: have the same back throw. :4greninja:,:4mewtwo:,:4samus: and:4robinm: and charge shot Neutral B
:4sheik:,:4zelda:,:4palutena: similar up B and :4sonic:,:4pacman:and:4megaman: have similar upB

And there are many more like this. Every character move set isn't going to be 100% original, there's going to be some move that some other fighter before them have in some way.

Seriously, how did this ever become a big deal? I saw a meme earlier; "Want your character DLC'd into smash? Give them a sword lolz" I don't get it. Aren't there like 13 or so characters with swords in this game? that's like a third of the cast right? That's not too many. This idea of too many characters with swords is just too random for me to reconcile.

A huge emphasis I've noticed, has been put on swordsmen for this game. With the exception of Meta Knight, the rest all have counter or counter-like moves. Ike, Marth, and Lucina all share the same counter attack. Supposedly as I've read, Cloud will play similar to Shulk (kinda reminds me of Shulk, just the Monodo Sword and beach boy charm are absent) with a final smash like Ike's.

It really reminds me of a debate I once had, regarding Link and Toon Link, and Mario and Dr. Mario. You can make minor differences in how they play, and call them completely different characters, but Smashers aren't stupid Nintendo. So Dr. Mario throws pills and Mario throws fireballs, or Dr. Mario runs a bit slower than Mario, do those facts really warrant completely different spots on the roster? Hardly. The reason some people are so outraged over Cloud's addition is because, I think they were looking for something more original.

Someone modeled differently, and didn't benefit a competitor (Sony). I think they were expecting Issac, King K. Rool, or Wolf. Thus the reason why so many were flabbergasted after the recent Direct presentation. I'm just a bit miffed because Sakarai added the character simply for its popularity in Japan (similar to how Sonic got added in Brawl) without looking at any other demographic. Maybe he did, I don't know, bu given the track record of adding characters whom are popular in the franchises home country.

Shulk also comes to mind (I never really saw anyone go gaga over Xenoblade when it was released for the Wii) and rumor has it Xenoblade was extremely popular in Japan so.....

K. Rool is lame, Wolf isn't new, and Issac is another sword-wielder so that's not gonna change anything.

Cloud may have similarities to others, but it doesn't take much to realize he's his own character.

And just because you haven't seen does not mean it wasn't wanted. Sonic may have been re-added (Sega originally declined early on in Brawl's development) into Brawl due to a Japanese ballot, but it's not like there wasn't support for him in the west. There were so many fake trailers before he was officially announced, and I remember the internet booming when he was.

Cloud is nearly the same.
