The Super Smash Bros. 3DS International Release Thread

As you may know, the Japanese release of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is set to go on sale September 13th. That is less than three weeks away! It is hard to believe that after such a long time and speculation that we will be able to truly see what's in the 3DS version. All of the characters, stages, items, modes, as well as game play and game mechanics will become public knowledge. With that in mind, the Smash 4 moderating team has been busy preparing for this release. Therefore, we ask that threads pertaining to the Japanese version to not be posted once the Japanese release hits shelves. While this thread will be remained closed for now, it will open a few days prior to the release and will serve as the hub for the Japanese release discussion and will also display information gathered by those who have access to the Japanese release and various news outlets. With that in mind, please do not make any topics pertaining to the Japanese release and come to this thread for all discussion and information.

This thread will be broken down into 6 different sections:

1. Characters: Newcomers and Veterans

With social media, streaming capabilities, and sites like Twitch, it is possible for fans to know the content in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS live. Bearing that in mind, there will be tons of new information and details pouring into the internet; not just Smashboards. We have a dedicated team of members here on the site who will be playing the Japanese version of the game and trying to unlock its secrets and give a little bit more on what is available. The Smashboards staff will also be assisting in updating this thread with up to date information. That being said, if there is some information that we missed here, please let myself or another staff member know. If you have information to share, I stress that you find the source you obtained it from and contact myself or another Staff Member via PM. We will attempt to locate this information in the game. This is to ensure we are not including fake information into the thread. In addition, from now until the release, unsubstantial leaks without any merit will not be included into the content. At this point, we are only including "leaks" from Zipzo who is attending the Full Release Demo Event in Japan. If you will have access to both a Japanese 3DS and the Japanese version, feel free to contact myself or Neo Zero about applying through private message.

Here are the list of members who will have the JPN version of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and will be contributing information to this thread:

If you would like to help out with this thread and have a Japanese 3DS and the Japanese version of SSB3DS, contact me and your admission you will be considered. This does not mean you will be admitted but your admission will be considered. If you wish to contribute second-hand information, that too will be reviewed before included into the OP. Please keep that in mind as we want to include only 100% information and not fake information.

This section will detail all of the information concerning both the newcomers and veterans. As information as found concerning them, please let myself or another staff member know so we can include it with the character section. In addition, there will be links to various discussion threads and the character sub-forum. In the case of yet to revealed veterans/newcomers, it will link to the veteran character thread or that character's support thread until the staff can get an official character sub-category up.

Note: This color denotes it is a default move, this color denotes it is a custom 1 move, and this color denotes a custom 2 move.

Veterans

Veteran's will only show changes within their moveset which includes customizable moves. If it does not include their default move, that means it has remained the same since Brawl and has changed since then. Palette swaps are included but previous taunts. on-screen appearances, and victory poses, unless entirely new, will not be included.

If you think something should be added, either from the full release demo in Japan or the initial Japanese release, let me know

Game Mechanics (New/Changed from Brawl)

Here are a list of confirmed changes from Brawl to Smash 4. These include game mechanics/game play/advanced techs/character stats.

  • Random tripping as been removed.
  • Sizes between characters are more apparent; especially with characters such as Donkey Kong and King Dedede.
  • The game speed is considered to be between Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • Character launch trails emit smoke. It also changes the blast color to that of the player.
  • Easier to see where the attack hits due to a slashing effect. Moves have a more stylized effect as well.
  • A new mechanic has been introduced for edge grabbing. If a player is grabbing an edge, another player can force them out by also grabbing the ledge thus changing the edge hogging strategy. Tether recoveries follow the same mechanic.
  • Swimming returns though certain stages may not use the mechanic.
  • During dashing, it is possible to use a forward tilt or Smash attack by turning immediately in the opposite direction and then executing the attack.
  • During a timed match, Star and Screen KOs will not happen 10 seconds prior to the match finishing.
  • Transformation into other characters will not return thus separating Zelda and Sheik and making Charizard a standalone character.
  • Screen KO's now involve the player hitting the screen and sliding off.
  • Players can pick from a standard stage or a Final Destination stage ( Ω )though it isn't sure if this will apply to all stages.
    • 3D Land
    • Rainbow Road
    • Paper Mario
    • Spirit Train
    • Gerudo Valley
    • Brinstar
    • Yoshi's Island
    • Tortimer Island
    • Corneria
    • Tomodachi Life
    • Living Room
    • Boxing Ring
    • Gaur Plains
    • Pac Maze
    • Wily Castle
    • Battlefield
    • Final Destination
  • Lack of a stale-move negation.
  • Neutral attacks that end in a indefinite number of weak hits no end with a finishing move.
    • Kirby
    • Fox
    • Sheik
    • Captain Falcon
    • Diddy Kong
    • Meta Knight
    • Pit
  • Pummeling has been sped up.
  • Holding the right control stick (C-stick on the GC controller) will now charge up the Smash Attack until released.
  • The ability to act out of hitstun is removed.
  • Revival platforms now have colors based on the remaining time before vanishing (yellow, orange, and then red)
  • Characters with high percentages emit steam.
  • On the 3DS version, players can tap on a characters icon on the bottom screen to place a marker on the character in order to more easily follow movements.
  • Also on the 3DS version, characters can have team colored outlines during Team Battles.
  • Players can adjust the line thickness from none to medium to bold.
  • Characters are now mirrored meaning that when they turn left or right, the front portion of them is always visible.
  • Characters no longer have to use palette swaps to indicate team colors but, rather, use on-screen indicators.
  • Victory screens show the 1st place winner with the 2nd through 4th in boxes; clapping.
  • Stock icons resembles Melee in that the stock icon is the characters head instead of a circle.
  • Characters no longer halt when they reach a ledge but will transition into a fall.
  • Faster shields
  • Near-melee ground speed, near-Brawl air speed.
  • Chain grabs have been removed from the final build.

  • Wall clinging
  • Back ledge grabbing
  • Fast falls

Game Modes

Single Player Modes

The Single player campaign has every modes for players to try out.

  • Classic Mode
    • Classic Mode functions much like it did previously though the player can choose to go down different paths with different fighters or challenges. Prior to starting the campaign, the player can put a certain amount of coins onto the Fiend Scale which will determine the difficulty of the matches. Loading more coins will result in larger and more luxurious rewards upon completion.
      • A roller spins to determine rewards. Rewards in red are customization parts, rewards in green are trophies, and rewards in yellow are gold. The higher the intensity, the more plentiful and rare the rewards. Rewards are given after every match.
  • All-Star Mode
    • Much like in the previous installments, All-Star Mode returns. The player can start the All-Star Mode from the beginning but will not display unlockable characters until they are unlocked. Instead of going by franchises, the character are ordered from personal debut date thus creating a timeline of sorts. Assist Trophies will also figure into All-Star Mode is some shape or form. The Maxim Tomato and Fairy Bottle are confirmed to be healing items int he Rest Area.
  • Stadium
    • Home-Run Contest
      • It functions much like the previous Home-Run Contests but there haven't been any official word on changes from Brawl to Smash 4.
    • Trophy Rush
      • A new game mode that involves breaking boxes to get new trophies. Masahiro Sakurai compared it to the "Coin Launcher" mode in Brawl.
    • Target Blast
      • A new mode that can be considered a combination of the Home-Run Contest and Target Smash. It involves beating on a 10-second timed bomb and then launching it at the target structure. The amount of destruction and targets destroyed depends on the power of the launch and the timed explosion. `layers get two chances of this and an average score is figured between the two scores.
    • Multi-Man Mode
      • Much like in previous Smash installments though the enemies have changed from the Fighting Alloys to the Mii Fighters. Apparently, Mii's in your Mii library will be imported into this mode thus resulting in you fighting the Mii's you created or downloaded.
  • Training
  • Challenges
    • Challenges now have pictures in the display screen to help players. Apparently the Wii U version will have harder challenges than the 3DS. A picture will accompany the Challenge screen to provide hints.
      • Play Target Blast for the first time (Unlocks Xerneas)

Multiplayer Modes

  • Vs. Mode
    • Vs. Mode functions much like in previous installments and allows up to 4 players playing.
  • Smash Run
    • An entirely new mode which pits the player against a whole host of enemies from the various franchises found in Super Smash Bros. and Nintendo. Players can defeat enemies for bonuses and other rewards such as custom parts. Collecting bonuses will increase the players overall abilities and, after 5 minutes, can carry these into a four player match. At times, the rules may change to special matches. Players can stock up prior to Smash Run beginning. Please read more about Smash Run in the Smash Run section.
Other Modes

Here are are some other confirmed modes that will appear on the 3DS version but do not fit into Single or Multiplayer modes:
  • Trophy Shop
    • Players can view available trophies in the Trophy shop and can purchase them with in-game coins either won through solo play or through spectator mode.
  • Trophies
    • A trophy that the player owns will randomly appear when you access The Vault. Players can cycle through various backgrounds
  • Passing By Battle Fray
    • Seen in the Japanese Guide, it is a mode that players attack others with the pointing portion of the circle. Attacking them causes players to fall off the map and earns you gold coins. Thought to be the StreetPass Feature.
  • Album
    • Pictures can be stored here and viewed. Photos with the 3D Depth Slider on will take photos in stereoscopic 3D and photos in 2D are taken with the feature off.
  • Sound Test: Even while in Sleep Mode, the Nintendo 3DS can continue to play the song tracks.
  • Records
  • Wii U
    • Masashiro Sakurai hinted that there will a connective feature between the Wii U and the 3DS versions.
  • The Vault
    • Will contain various goodies and rewards such as trophies.

Online Capabilities

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is confirmed to have online capabilities and shares the same features as the Wii U version.

The Online mode has two options for playing people online:
  1. With Friends: Play against friends that are registered on your Nintendo 3DS. This is accessible via Friend Code in the 3DS.
  2. With Anyone: Play against anyone randomly online. Mii Fighters are unable to brought into this mode though. This also includes move set customization thus making the characters default moveset the only one that can be used.
When battling online, it is possible to report abusive players who...
  • Join but don't fight
  • Relentlessly target a single player
  • Repeatedly self-destructs
  • Frequently drops-out for any reasons
  • Cheats (systems abuse)
  • Falsely or baselessly reports another player
Punishments such as temporary bans will be given to players to break any number of these conditions that is reminiscent of Miiverse's Code of Conduct.

Two modes are available for players to enter into:
  1. For Fun: An online mode targeted towards people enjoying the game in a friendly environment. In this mode, players will fight a four-player match free-for-all with items turned on. All stages are viable except for Final Destination and will be chosen at random by the computer. Only wins will be accumulated and recorded. Team Modes are all also allowed,
  2. For Glory: An online mode targeted towards people who wish for a more competitive experience. In this mode, matches are only played on Final Destination with no items and will primarily consist of 1 vs 1 matches. Both wins and losses will be recorded. Omega versions of stages (FD stages) can also appear as opposed to the traditional Final Destination.
Spectator Mode is confirmed to return which will allow spectators to take bets on who will win the match by observing the following conditions:
  • Match rules
  • win rates
  • odds
  • character being used
  • stage
1st and 2nd place winners will received in-game coins as will those who placed bets on the winner. Instead of a direct payout based on the number of participants, a set payout is determined based on calculations related to the chances of victory. 2nd place winners will receive a prize in a 4 player match.
Global Smash Power is a new feature which functions much like an online global ranking system. The system ranks all players on a numeric scale with the number referencing how many players are considered worse than the ranked player. For example, 100,450 is a better ranking than 100,449 other players. This is considered to be an inverse ranking system with people battling to be the highest number rather than #1. According to Masahiro Sakurai, the Global Smash Power of players will only be influenced by solo play modes and that multiplayer matches will be ignored but he did note there will be some sort of matchmaking during online play. The following modes will affect your Global Smash Power:
  • Home-Run Contest
  • Target Blast

As more information concerning the game mechanics, game modes, techs, and online capabilities are revealed; we will update this post with that information.

Smash Run
Smash Run is an entirely new feature in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and is a 3DS exclusive. Called "Field Smash" in Japanese, Smash Run allows players to jump into an expansive world ruled by enemies and baddies from Nintendo franchises and beyond. As you battle enemies and access secret areas, you can gain various items such as bonuses that increases particular stats or even custom parts for your Mii characters or held items. Players have five minutes to go through the stage; battling enemies and gaining bonuses to better prepare for the match ahead: a 4 way free-for-all with the other three players. Prior to starting, players equip find power ups and items that they found through previous playthroughs or completing challenges. After the five minutes are up, the stats are added tot he characters stat sheet and then enter into the match which is one minute in length. Special matches can also happen instead of a regular match.

List of Power Ups
Here is a list of Power-Ups that we currently know. The power ups has a grade to it that will either increase the stat slightly or increase it greatly.

|Attack|Boosts attack power of normal attacks
|Special|Boosts power of all special moves
|Arms|Increases strength of projectiles, items, and throws
|Defense|More difficult to launch players
No Icon| Timed |The icon is in the shape of a clock. Boosts stats for a small period of time

Prior to starting a match, players are able to include equipable items that they may get while traversing Smash Run previously. The total weight limit is 25 and there are six places to put in bonus upgrades though some characters are able to carry more weight than others. Some of them items that are available are:

For those who are confused, the staff decided it was appropriate to redo the old thread by moving posts over to the Discussion Thread. I should of thought that out better but things are starting to straighten out. To discuss the Japanese release, please visit the Smash 3DS Japanese Information Discussion Thread.

Famitsu scans show the starter color swaps for the starting characters. The OP is updated with these new colors. Check back for some more colors and alt swaps if we find some more in the JPN version!

UPDATE: 12:22 9/22/2014
I updated the item section of the OP with links and descriptions as well as separating them from new to old.

Wario, Ganondorf, Mr. Game and Watch, Bowser Jr., and Jigglypuff also confirmed as playable.

Magicant is a stage for the Mother series.

I will be updating the OP and the character doc tonight hopefully.

Ganomdorf was confirmed to use his sword as his neutral B custom move! Does this mean Ganondorf will be using his sword now?

I can confirm that an American version and a Japanese version can be played together locally.

Edit #1

The starting armor is
Brawn Badge +21, -14,
Protective Badge +21, -14
Agility Badge +21, -14

All of witch still retain the Japanese stats

Edit #2

Challenge # 7 is Hit Sadbag 984 ft rather than the Japanese 300 Meters

Edit #3
