Smash Bros is an awesome game, it's brought together people from around the world in tournaments created and awesome community and brings all the characters we love so they can duke it out. But we've been missing one thing that a lot of other games have, speed runners. The speed running community for this game is extremely small. only about 10 people per Smash game even try and run it. there's no competition right now. So here's my idea, Smash Running. Taking Smash Bros up to speed.
I have started this thread so if you decide to start running this game you can post your time below and I will add you to the charts.

Links:

If you would like to send your times to Speedrun.com than here is a link.

And here is a link to the 3ds thread if you would like to start running that game
I will start recording times that people send me and will create a new leader-boards right here on smash boards. Please use the formatting directions and just reply to this thread if you have any questions.

UPDATE:
I will be making a Project M, Brawl, and Melee in the future. I'm sorry I don't have a lot of time right now (and it take forever to write these) but I will be getting to them. Thanks for the cooperation, and happy Smashing. :)

I just don't think this game really lends itself to "speed runs" because there is not a set format to go through. So you can't really compare your time to anyone elses, because no one else had the same layout to go through; you get different matches every time you play.

For example, in Classic, you might get to play a bunch of 1v1s on ideal maps and easily KO opponents within seconds, but in another run you will wind up having to play a couple of big free for alls which will take much longer (Rounds 3 and 5 don't let you pick, but they are never the same either).

Also the items make it arbitrary as well. If a golden hammer spawns right away, you can grab that and clear a huge 8-person FFA much easier than if a Mr. Saturn spawns instead. Or worse, if a good item spawns on the other side of the map and a CPU picks it up, then sometimes you can't do anything except wait it out until that item is used up (whether it be a hammer, assist trophy, pokemon, etc.). And that certainly ruins a potential speed run.

All star is the same - you can't pick the level, so it's just random luck whether or not you get a stage where you can easily KO people on or a stage where it is difficult to get quick KOs.

Smash Tour is even more arbitrary because it completely depends on how many times the CPU players run into each other on the map, or how many fighters everyone picks up for the end battle. It doesn't matter how good you are, you aren't going to get a good time if they start a battle every 2-3 turns.

That's kinda the fun in it, RNG (random number generator) based games are always fun to watch and play because you'll never know what will happen. Maybe you'll get the best run of your life and the one right after could be your worst. Speed running has had tons of RNG based games take off and have huge communities. I was hoping we could do the same for Smash Bros. ITs finding the quickest strategy to kill an opponent and changing your strategy mid-run to accommodate for items/stage.

I personally run Mario kart 7 but I love smash bros and wanted to show the community a new way to play. Maybe not, I do have small competitions with my friends to see who can get the best time in one day.

It may be luck based but it isn't impossible to run, That's just my opinion anyway I agree with people playing the game the way they see fit. Anyway happy Smashing :)

Any examples of RNG games besides Mario Kart? I think the fun of watching speed runs is seeing all the crazy eploits/glitches/secrets that they use to finish games like Zelda and Mario in record time. Speed running Classic might just be being good at the game? All-Star makes more sense but still kinda just fighting CPUs really well.

well every game essentially has RNG but a few that I can think of are Rogue Legacy, any Pokemon game (the Pokemon can have any number of stats and abilities), Binding of Issac, Super Monkey Ball has quite a bit of RNG in it, and Fire Emblem.

Pretty much any game where you have some percent chance of something different happening is has RNG in it, they key is to adapt to it and use it to your advantage or know when it's coming and make sure it doesn't happen. It just depends on the game/ Also in a way any speed run is just being good at the game, even if it is using glitches to beat the game. Technically I could use pacman and make the CPU fall through the stage quickly and that would be considered a glitch run. Smash Bros is not an exception.
