Sigurd and Eliwood for DLC Support Thread - Raise Your Lances!

"Knights respect honour and justice, and what you've done isn't just. I've returned to restore Grannvale's reputation!"
-Sigurd

I haven’t forgotten. I’ll never forget. It was my mistake that killed (spoiler). Because of that… I will fight. I will not run away and hide in sorrow… I’m going to put an end to all of this!
-Eliwood

This is a thread for anyone who supports the idea of Eliwood and Sigurd being featured in future Smash or Fire Emblem content. Discussion on any of these topics or these characters and supporting them are welcome here. If there is anything you feel the thread is missing that you'd like to contribute, please post it below and I will consider adding it to the original thread. Thank you for taking the time to check out this thread. :grin:

We only have three months to go until the ballot ends, but let's give them all we got! I have more plans than simply Sm4sh inclusion, which I plan to expand on after the ballot. Stay tuned for more! We know our chances are slim, but please refrain from outright saying "they won't be in" with complete confidence and refrain from bashing us for who we support. We are well aware of our odds and who we support, and we intend to succeed in at least one of our goals.

Goals:
  • Experience Sigurd and Eliwood playable on one slot/character in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, or see them represented as Mii Costumes, Assist Trophies, Stage Bosses, Alternate Costumes for Marth/Roy/Ike, or even plain old trophies!
  • See Sigurd and Eliwood gain Fire Emblem: Fates DLC, after being left out in favor of their sons in Fire Emblem: Awakening.
  • See Eliwood playably represented in Project M in one form or another, be it a fighter, alternate costume, or even palette on Roy, since Sigurd already has representation through Marth's alternate costume and palettes.
Pros of Sigurd+Eliwood in Sm4sh:
  • Series representation between Marth and Roy would be directly tied up.
  • Jugdral, the only multi-game continent in the Fire Emblem series without a fighter, would be represented.
  • The likelihood of finally seeing Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and other Japan-only titles officially localized would increase massively.
  • Advance Wars, fellow classic GBA strategy series, could see publicity from Eliwood's inclusion and bundles/sales alongside the GBA Fire Emblems.
  • Iconic heroes to Strategy RPG's as a whole for both Japan and overseas gamers would be featured in Smash, and many more would love these fighters and branch into their games.
  • Incredibly unique fighters who would bring many new things to both Super Smash Bros. and Fire Emblem, they are among the absolute most unique choices for Fire Emblem representation.
  • New Amiibo content for Codename: S.T.E.A.M, Fire Emblem: Fates, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, and potentially Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. This would include new designs of these characters, remixes of their soundtracks, seeing these characters in more titles, and more content in general for these titles.
  • Classic Fire Emblem representation, many veterans dislike how few newcomers to the series are willing to play older titles, and this would fix a good portion of that by giving more incentive to visit older titles.
How to Achieve/Support Us!:
Smashboards:
  • Keep this thread bumped and as active as possible. Tag anyone who may be interested, and link this thread to them. Regular discussion on these characters, Fire Emblem, Smash, etc. will help most.
Sm4sh:
  • Use the Fighter Ballot at https://cp.nintendo.co.jp/us/ to request Sigurd and Eliwood together on the same character slot as DLC. The deadline is October 3rd. Here is an example vote:
I ask that you please word votes as your own, and please express your own interest and sentiments on seeing Sigurd and Eliwood playable together. Add interest on seeing them in Fates after being left out in Awakening or a future Smash title as well! Anything can change!
  • Play with the Sigurd palette on Ike (blue) and the Eliwood palette on Roy (blue cape, cyan shoulderpads, red and gold headband).
  • Play online with the tags "Sigurd4DLC", "Sigurd FE", "Eliwood FE", "KnightLord", "Eli+Sig FE", or anything similar.
  • Use Miiverse to request the playability of Sigurd and Eliwood together as one Knight Lord fighter. Feel free to use any information needed from this thread. In the main community, you want to aim for color drawings with the Paint feature, try to recruit artists willing to help us by drawing these characters together. In the "Support _____!" communities, use black-and-white fighter cheer drawings for Marth, Roy, Ike, Robin, and/or Lucina involving Sigurd and Eliwood together as Knight Lords.

Contact Nintendo directly here. The site allows you to contact Nintendo through a support ticket process, however, there is a max character limit for what you want to write. Instead, I recommend contacting NoA via email through this support address: nintendo@noa.nintendo.com
- Namco Bandai: support@namcobandaigames.com (website, customer support)
- Intelligent Systems: webmaster@intsys.co.jp (website)

If you decide to e-mail Intelligent Systems, be sure to mention that you would like to see Eliwood and Sigurd as Fates DLC, and possibly Levin/Lewyn, Hector, Sothe, and other possible picks you'd like to see!

Calling Nintendo of America: (425)-882-2040 and Namco Bandai: (408)-235-2000

Letters: Sending a physical letter shows commitment and thought -- it's probably one of the best ways to get through to people. Brief structure ideas:

1) Greeting/Introduction (who are you and what are you going to be talking about?)
2) Body (why do you support Sigurd+Eliwood, why do their absences from Awakening's redesigns and Smash DLC have a negative effect on you, what they can bring, etc., and anything else you think is important)
3) Closing/last words (be sure to leave a polite and good impression)
4) Signature (or anonymously signed if you prefer)
5) Postscript ("P.S." at the end of the letter. Usually applies to pen & ink written letters. If you forgot something/have something else to say that may be a little off topic [usually applies to e-mails], here's your chance)

I also suggest including pictures of all of your Fire Emblem merchandise, pictures of handmade Fire Emblem goods like crafts and baked goods, drawings of Sigurd and Eliwood together as Knight Lords, gifts like pins/buttons and crafts of these characters, etc. in your physical mail.

***Don't forget to buy international stamps if you're sending mail outside your country!***

Project M:

We would like to see Eliwood represented in one form or another, as a new fighter, alternate costume, or palette. Since he exists in the game as a sticker, adding him as a fighter would work according to their guidelines on adding fighters and how they must have pre-existing content in the game.
This thread features a lot of moveset potential for Project M and Eliwood, so I feel he'd be the perfect debut newcomer for the mod with a lot of work already set aside for him here.

***Please remember to be polite and courteous when reaching out. There's nothing wrong with trying to make a strong, loud impression, however, we should also make a good impression***

Closing:

Sigurd and Eliwood will need all the support they can get, especially with slim odds. If they don't become playable in the end, that's alright. It shows interest for them to gain new designs in Fire Emblem: Fates, their playability in future Smash titles, localization of Holy War, Thracia, and even other titles, and playability in Project M. Please don't be shy to spread the movement around -- tell your friends, family, and everyone else in between. Most of us are viewing this thread on some sort of device with wifi... why not spend 5 min tweeting your support for these guys, or writing an email? It doesn't hurt to at least try.

Introduction:
Welcome. To start this off, I will explain the basic premise of why this thread supports both Sigurd and Eliwood. First of all, they are two of the only three Knight Lords in the series, outside of Sigurd's son, Seliph. Due to sharing the same class and enough similarities, Sigurd and Eliwood would be two characters on one moveset or slot, essentially. That is the goal this thread pushes for. Second, while each has many merits of their own as a potential fighter for Smash, working as a duo would greatly increase their range of strengths and niches, as each has many things the other does not in terms of series representation, potential reveal material via trailers and screenshots, and types of fans each characters attracts. Third, they meet many fan criteria. During my days of being a staunch supporter of Roy for DLC over five years to the finish line, I noticed several points detractors used against Roy.

"Why not vote for someone unique, like a lance or axe user?"
"Just another swordfighter."
"Roy is just a third Marth, vote for _____ instead."
"Roy is the worst lord!"

It's sad that I had to deal with all of this, because Roy was the best choice for Fire Emblem in terms of series representation with the roles and niches he filled, popularity, veteran status, relevancy, and potentially bringing a game overseas that has an existing cliffhanger on Virtual Console to lead the way for more localizations.
Oh well, be careful what you wish for. No backing down with your "6th rep" arguments now :chuckle:
Why did I go on that tangent? Because Sigurd and Eliwood together would tackle these issues. With a primarily lance-based moveset and mount, a Knight Lord would bring many new things to Smash while being proper representation of Fire Emblem mechanics, far from a typical swordsman. For those obsessed with statistics over personality, Sigurd is widely considered the strongest lord there is, how could you go wrong? Eliwood himself doesn't slack, he commonly places well on user tier lists, and despite his flaws in his own mode, he has incredible potential and viability on Hector's modes that can take advantage of a lot of mileage. Despite some complaints about him, I believe he is one of the better lords of the series stat-wise. Eliwood has his own gameplay niche, similar to a King in Chess. He doesn't start as the best, but he realizes his potential later in the game and truly shines. This alone appeals to many, primarily Japanese players, who also like Roy for being a high-potential, incredibly powerful unit later on. Ironically, Sigurd's incredible base resources and continued potential throughout the first generation appeals to primarily Western fans, when his continent is Japan-only, while Eliwood appeals to Japanese fans despite being in an overseas game. Sigurd is like a Queen in chess, being among your best units from the beginning to end of his tale. With Rook Roy, the Male and Female Robins as the Bishop, and Lucina and Marth as Knights, only Eliwood and Sigurd can complete the board; the rest of the roster are pawns in comparison to them.

Finally, Sakurai's famous four criteria come to mind. This is the most important case in arguing Sigurd and Eliwood as a duo for fighter DLC.

Sakurai's "Four Criteria" for Sigurd and Eliwood:
1. The character's inclusion must make people want to play the game.

Both Sigurd and Eliwood's games are easily-accessible and cheap.
Sigurd's game, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, is 926 yen, tax included, for Wii U owners in Japan on Virtual Console. Sigurd in Smash could mean localization of Genealogy to increase potential players.
Eliwood's game, Fire Emblem, referred to commonly as FE7 because it lacks its own unique title in English, is priced at roughly $7.99 across the world.

Players will fall in love with the unique mechanics of these characters, which I will describe under "Moveset" in this thread with my own moveset. Choosing when and when not to use your mount, being careful enough to not let your mount reach 0 HP, choosing the right weapons for combat, and learning proper control of the map with such a unique character are akin to Fire Emblem's mechanics to a tee. Any player who clicks with these characters or at least enjoys them are highly likely to love the games they are from, which are cheap and easily-accessible. Not only will these players love the games these characters are specifically from, they will love their series. With Awakening's release and popularity, the early speculation, sales, and hype for Fates, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem coming, and more Fire Emblem games reaching the Wii U Virtual Console, the series is highly accessible and there has never been a better time to be a fan of the series. Sigurd and Eliwood go above and beyond on this criteria.

Final Grade: A+

2. The character must be unique.

Addition of a mount with its own hitpoints, a new weapon type bringing all of its unique attributes to its highest potential due to the leverage of a mount, a unit who succeeds more on their mount rather than off their mount is entirely unique compared to other strengths and weaknesses in Smash, magic swords are largely unused and tapped into, and no character has a Final Smash where they equip a stronger physical weapon to let loose with it. On top of that, Smash has few handicap or joke characters, and the Knight Lords are unique in how they handle that: You can choose to stay unmounted for each stock, by hopping off your mount at any given stock during invincibility from the respawn platform. Unlike Olimar, your condition to become a handicap character is less of a hassle, and you have access to more attacks than Olimar. This would also be a first for any swordsman.

Final Grade: A+

3. The character must fit into the style of Super Smash Bros.

Since Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001, Fire Emblem characters have been a perfect fit for Smash, with Marth being incredibly iconic to the series. Other Fire Emblem characters offer their own twists and quirks that strongly contrast with Marth, even Lucina and Roy do. In a game where all fighters can ride and fight on top of Gogoat, Wario parades around the battlefield on his bike, Dedede is carried into battle by several Waddle-Dees, a duck uses a dog as a mount and summons projectiles out of nowhere, a villager rides on rockets he pulls out of nowhere and has random prone conditions from it, and where hydrant water servers as convenient transportation, why would a plain old horse be out of the question? It is not difficult to envision a game where a knight rides a horse, especially in one as quirky as Super Smash Bros.

Final Grade: A+

4. They must contribute to the game balance.

This means that the character must have their own strengths and weaknesses, and both areas where they excel and struggle. Sigurd and Eliwood are perfect for this. They can poke away enemies with their lances, throw javelins or use short-range magic bursts with a magic sword, and cover a few blind spots with short sword arcs, but not all. This allows them excellent zoning potential, but their blindspots are more exaggerated than other zoning characters, and they have trouble dealing with a foe once that foe starts playing around in their blindspots, like characters with good mobility and combo potential. They are strong when mounted, but must rely on the Silver Sword when dismounted, lacking mobility or excellent unmounted progress that would compare to Marth, Roy, Robin, Ike, and Lucina. They have to endure this until their mounts recover. When characters with strong crouch abilities such as Kirby or Game & Watch use their low crouch, it is difficult for the Knight Lord to play around, while they challenge aerial approaches well and condition foes with their projectiles and poking tools. With their balance of strengths and weaknesses, the Knight Lords would enhance and enrich the balance of Smash.

Final Grade: A+

Overall, Sigurd and Eliwood fit all of Sakurai's criteria for Super Smash Bros. perfectly. Not only do they meet these criteria, they go above and beyond, with many factors that will make people love them and their games while strongly enriching the series.

Moveset

Background:
Mount:
The basic premise is that you start each stock on your horse, or mount. Similar to Bowser Jr.'s clown car, it has a hurtbox which functions differently from the fighter's body. Your fighter takes reduced damage when the horse is damaged, but it has its own HP, displayed similarly to Little Mac's KO Punch meter. If your horse falls to zero hitpoints, your fighter suffers what is essentially a "Shield Break" off of their horse, where they are left prone for several seconds for a powerful punish. This is similar to being heavily punished for letting a unit's hitpoints drop to zero in Fire Emblem, especially in Sigurd and Eliwood's games. Because of this, you want to watch your horse's hitpoints and dismount when they are near 0. When your mount is dismissed, they regen hitpoints over time, while you fight in a weaker, unmounted state. Once you are comfy with the level of HP your horse has, you can choose to mount again and enjoy the power of mounted combat.

Weaponry:
Steel Lance, Silver Sword, Wind Sword, Javelin, Armorslayer (Armor Cutter/Rapier), Legendary Blade (Tyrfing/Durandal)

Each of these weapons are iconic and/or easy to obtain with great mileage on both characters.

Steel Lance:
Utility: A powerful, long-reach lance that serves as an effective zoning tool. Its only weakness is that it leaves a large blind spot open above it, with some lag after each poke.
Reasoning:
Sigurd: His starting inventory includes an Iron Lance, and the Steel Lance is an upgrade of that. It is easy to pass a Steel Lance to Sigurd, and his signature weapon in Awakening, Sigurd's Lance, is a high-power lance with 1 range as well. The Steel Lance is one of the few lances he can wield, and among his best. A common strategy is to let him use the Steel Lance while Finn uses the Brave Lance, with it being Finn's best weapon and the best item he can carry to the second generation.
Eliwood: After promotion, he starts the Knight Lord class with a D-rank in lances. Steel lances are a powerful weapon for him, giving a nice oomph in power as well as doubling his experience gained in lances. They are easily-obtainable, and a great choice for Eliwood.

Silver Sword:
Utility: It covers blind spots and arcs around Sigurd and Eliwood, but with short reach. When unmounted, it is their primary weapon.
Reasoning:
Sigurd: It is given to him as a gift from Alvis in Holy War's prologue, and is easily his best weapon until Tyrfing.
Eliwood: A proper Eliwood who is ready for promotion will easily reach A in swords long before it to wield this weapon. At 8 weight, it's very cozy for our 9 CON hero. A solid weapon overall that befits him.

Wind Sword:
Utility: It launches mid-range wind blades when used, and has a 1-2-3 order of blades if used multiple times.
Reasoning: For both heroes, it's a rare weapon with weird, obscure requirements to obtain. However, it's one of the better (and few) magic swords each can use, with wind magic largely untapped in terms of potential for Smash.

Javelin:
Utility: A staple weapon to Fire Emblem as a whole, it is a weaker lance that allows attacks from both a short range and long range. Since grabbing on a horse would be difficult, a chain could be attached specifically to any javelins that grab or are used as tethers.
Reasoning: Why anyone wouldn't give a javelin ASAP to either of these characters is beyond me.

Armorslayer:
Utility: Fierce downward slashes push foes away and deal great damage to their shields.
Sigurd: By visiting a village in Chapter 2, you gain access to this weapon that tears through armor.
Sigurd(Bonus): Rapiers exist in Jugdral, via Thracia 776. Throwing one on Sigurd to match Eliwood eliwoodn't be a stretch.
Eliwood: His personal rapier, a starting weapon only he can wield in his game, deals extra damage to armored units. In addition, it seems to be featured in Awakening as "Eliwood's Blade," similar to "Sigurd's Lance."

Legendary Blade:
Utility: An unmatched blade brought in to finish wars, equipped during the Final Smash.
Reasoning: For both heroes, it is obtained in their final chapter, an ultimate weapon to end their struggles. Fitting for a "Final Smash."
Each has a different weapon. Sigurd wields the Tyrfing, with visual similarities to Falchion. Eliwood wields the Durandal, a massive, unique blade of its own. Both blades are fairly large. Eliwood has a lot of life and power in his Durandal animations, with newfound flashiness, which would work very well as the main inspiration for the attack animations within this Final Smash.

In my moveset, I have included random .gifs of similar animations. They are not meant to be 100% accurate attachments to their moves, rather an afterthought and ideas on cool ways to reference other characters of the Fire Emblem series, since the character would rely on being a large amount of fanservice for the series overall and ways to capture its charm from its animations for new players.

Mounted Moveset:
MOUNTED:

Specials:

:GCB:: Javelin Toss:
Launch a Javelin forwards. You can hold B to charge up the javelin, and adjust analog either up or down to aim, then let go to release. The more it's charged, the more power and range it will possess. You can shield to store your javelin charge, or press left or right to do the same and roll.

:GCL::GCB:: Knight Charge:
Charge forward with your Steel Lance and trusty steed, then end with a powerful poke! This is essentially a movement tool that keeps a hitbox in front of you, but it forces you to dash attack in a sense. You can smash the input to increase speed and power!

:GCU::GCB:: To Victory!:
Launch upwards diagonally with your Steel Lance extended as a recovery, goring anything in your path. Not the fastest recovery, but it hits hard.

:GCD::GCB:: Dismount:
Dismiss your horse, allowing it time to recover HP on the sidelines while you attempt to fend off your foes in a weaker state. This is where the unmounted moveset later comes in.

Smashes:

:GCCL:: Lance Thrust:
A powerful, yet laggy lunge with the Steel Lance. Deals a lot of damage and shield damage, but its blindspots and lag balance it out. Can be angled with :GCCDL::GCCUL:, too.

:GCCD:: Cyclone Slice:
Sigurd/Eliwood duck a bit to deliver a heavy slash below their horse, traveling in a forward direction, with the Wind Sword. While the slash boasts little range, it hits the hardest. From the blade, a larger, more powerful wind blade launches. You can continue to press A to deliver a second and third slash, each increasing in power. Alternatively, if the second slash lands, you can press A to have Sigurd/Eliwood raise their blade and trap them in a finishing flurry of blades.
:GCCD: (Alternative) Sweeping Spear:
The horse leaps up slightly, and Sigurd/Eliwood spins the Steel Lance underneath the horse, drawing it back to idle position as the horse lands.

:GCCU:: Silver Lining:
Slash in a powerful, wide arc with the Silver Sword above Sigurd/Eliwood. It's basically the usual swordsman utilt in smash form.

Jab/Tilts:

:GCA:: Lance Jab:
The Steel Lance is quickly slashed downwards a bit, smacking anything in its path.

:GCL::GCA:: Lance Poke:
A quick Steel Lance stab, being an in-between of the jab and side smash. Similarly to the side smash, it can be angled with :GCDL::GCA: and :GCUL:.

:GCU::GCA:: Lance Twirl:
Simply a Steel Lance lance twirl from idle position that covers anything above Sigurd/Eliwood quickly.
(specifically, the beginning)

:GCD::GCA:: Wind Whisk:
Sigurd/Eliwood duck a bit to slash below their horse with the Wind Sword, in a forward direction. It's a short, weak slash that sends out a small wind blade, with little startup and lag. Can easily be spammed.

Aerials:

:GCA:: Handoff Spin:
Siugurd/Eliwood spin their lance around them, alternating hands, to cover all around them.
(the beginning swings in particular)

:GCL::GCA:: Aerial Armor Break:
Due to the awkward aerial approach of a horse, and how shields generally beat aerial approaches, Eliwood/Sigurd attempt to play around it by delivering a strong downwards slash with the Armorslayer/Rapier that specializes in shield damage.

:GCR::GCA:: Backhand Lance:
A reverse lunge with the Steel Lance that trades the shield damage and frontal arc of forward air for sheer poke range. This gives the player a lot of incentive to learn RAR (reverse aerial rush) and more room to play around the horse's potentially clunky aerial mobility. It can be angled like a tilt/smash, too, making it even more technical.

:GCU::GCA:: Ascending Spinning Spear:
Imagine Pit/Dark Pit's up air, but with more range with the Steel Lance at the cost of more endlag.

:GCD::GCA:: Abyss Toss:
Throw a Javelin downwards into the abyss as a projectile. If the tip/point connects, it spikes.

Dash Attack:
Lunge forward with the Steel Lance while dashing.

Throws:

**NOTE**: Because it's difficult to grab while on a mount, their grab involves launching a javelin on a chain, pulling in any foes caught as a tether grab. This can be used to latch onto ledges. However, there's just a normal grab and no tether when unmounted.

Tether example:

:GCL:: Sigurd/Eliwood kick a foe to a sitting position from their horse, then launch them away with a Steel Lance lunge.
:GCR:: Sigurd/Eliwood slash through their foe with the Wind Sword, which detonates into a wind explosion that sends the foe backwards.
:GCU:: Sigurd/Eliwood slash their foe away to the skies with their Silver Sword.
:GCD:: Sigurd/Eliwood throw their foe under the horse, then the horse stomps them to pop them up for a combo.

Taunts:
:GCU:: The Knight Lord raises their currently equipped weapon to the air; it shines from its tip, no matter the weapon.
:GCL::GCR:: Sigurd/Eliwood stoops down a bit to pet their horse, which lets out a neigh.
:GCD:: Sigurd/Eliwood's horse kicks at the ground, similar to how Eliwood's horse does before attacks.

Dismounted Moveset:
DISMOUNTED:

Specials:

:GCB:: Tempest Blade:
Sigurd/Eliwood raise the Wind Sword above them, launching forward a moderately-fast wall of wind. Hold B to charge this blade. The more it's charged, the more power and range it will possess. You can shield to store your wind charge, or press left or right to do the same and roll. Your wind and javelin charges are separate charges, by the way.

:GCL::GCB:: Pursuit/Continue:
Charge forward with the Silver Sword. If you connect with a foe or shield, automatically unleash an unforgiving flurry of blows, with a powerful finishing blow. If you miss, you're left prone for quite a while. This functions as a command grab.

:GCU::GCB:: Leaping Blade:
Slash in a wide arc while leaping upwards with the Silver Sword.

:GCD::GCB:: Dismount:
Mount your horse from the sidelines, stopping its HP regen to utilize its power.

Smashes:

:GCCL:: Sword Thrust:
A powerful, yet laggy lunge with the Armorslayer/Rapier. Deals a lot of damage and shield damage, but its lack of an arc and lag balance it out. Can be angled with :GCCDL::GCCUL:, too.

:GCCD:: Cyclone Slice:
Sigurd/Eliwood slash downwards to deliver a heavy slash below them, traveling in a forward direction, with the Wind Sword.
:GCCD: (Alternative) Sweeping Sword:
Sigurd/Eliwood stab with the Silver Sword once on each side.

:GCCU:: Silver Lining:
Slash in a powerful, wide arc with the Silver Sword above Sigurd/Eliwood. It's basically the usual swordsman utilt in smash form.

Jab/Tilts:

:GCA:: Sword Slash:
The Silver Sword is quickly slashed downwards a bit, slashing anything in its path.

:GCL::GCA:: Sword Poke:
A quick Silver Sword stab, being an in-between of the jab and side smash. Similarly to the side smash, it can be angled with :GCDL::GCA: and :GCUL:.

:GCU::GCA:: Sword Twirl:
A weaker slash upwards than up smash that covers Sigurd/Eliwood from above. Similar to Marth and Toon Link's.

:GCD::GCA:: Wind Whisk:
Sigurd/Eliwood duck a bit to slash below their horse with the Wind Sword, in a forward direction. It's a short, weak slash that sends out a small wind blade, with little startup and lag. Can easily be spammed.

Aerials:

:GCA:: Handoff Spin:
Siugurd/Eliwood spin their sword to cover all around them.

:GCL::GCA:: Aerial Armorbreak:
Eliwood/Sigurd deliver a strong downwards slash with the Armorslayer/Rapier that specializes in shield damage.

:GCR::GCA:: Backhand Slash:
A reverse lunge with the Silver Sword that trades the shield damage and frontal arc of forward air for sheer poke range. This gives the player a lot of incentive to learn RAR (reverse aerial rush). It can be angled like a tilt/smash, too, making it even more technical.

:GCU::GCA:: Ascending Stab:
An incredibly quick poke upwards that can easily be used over and over in succession.

:GCD::GCA:: Abyss Toss:
Throw a wind blade from the Wind Sword downwards into the abyss as a projectile that launches upwards.

Dash Attack:
Lunge forward with your Silver Sword, similar to Eliwood's unpromoted attack animation.

Throws:

:GCL:: Sigurd/Eliwood toss their foe forwards.
:GCR:: Sigurd/Eliwood slash through their foe with the Wind Sword, which detonates into a wind explosion that sends the foe backwards.
:GCU:: Sigurd/Eliwood slash their foe away to the skies with their Silver Sword.
:GCD:: Sigurd/Eliwood throw their foe donwards to pop them up. Not a combo throw like the mounted version.

Taunts:

:GCU:: The Knight Lord raises their currently equipped weapon to the air; it shines from its tip, no matter the weapon.
:GCL::GCR:: Sigurd/Eliwood do the beginning of Eliwood's unpromoted critical.
Buffering a side smash during this will increase its power.
:GCD:: Sigurd/Eliwood bow to their foe, due to being some of the most honorable characters in Fire Emblem and aspiring knights.

@ Lord-Zero Lord-Zero 's idea on Eliwood using axes and differentiating the two:
That's why I suggested the axes; he'd be a blend of the FE6 and FE7 Eliwoods. It'd create an interesting situation regarding Roy. While Marth and Lucina are very distant relatives, their styles are very similar while Eliwood and Roy, having a much closer relationship to each other as father and son, would fight very differently from each other. There's also the fact that Eliwood becomes the "finest knight of Lycia" (And there we have his title "Lycia's Finest Knight" or "Lycia's Blazing Knight" as a reference to Durandal) as said by the game when you begin his story in FE7 and it's referenced by Lilina in her supports with Marcus in FE6. He could use the Wind Sword, Light Brand and the Runesword While Roy brings his talent for short-range combat, Eliwood would bring his skill at managing multiple weapons to keep opponents on their toes. His moveset would also incorporate references to other mounted classes from the Fire Emblem games. Yes, that 500 character limit can be annoying. Also, yes, an English VA to empathize FE7's role as the first localized FE.
Final Smash:
Sigurd/Eliwood summon their horse, which heals to full HP, and they bring out their own legendary blade. For Sigurd, he pulls out Tyrfing. For Eliwood, he pulls out Durandal. They let loose on the battlefield, with several signature moves which are very powerful. They have super armor for the entirety of the Final Smash, and their horses cannot lose HP.

Potential Attacks:

Possible Palettes:
4 palettes apiece:
Sigurd: Default, Seliph, Leif, Dierdre/Diadora.
Eliwood: Default, Hector, Lyndis, Ninian.
8 palettes apiece:
Sigurd: Default, Seliph, Leif, Diedre/Diadora, Eldigan, Alvis, Finn, Oifaye.
Eliwood: Default, Hector, Lyndis, Ninian, Pent, Sain, Kent, Fiora

Sigurd Amiibo?!

Even better. But one would be welcome.

Potential Render Poses for Future Content:

Why Sigurd and Eliwood together?
Sigurd is the main character of the first generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. Despite being a Japan-only game, it sold exceptionally-well, with Eliwood's game in Japan not too far behind. Many strategy RPG enthusiasts know Sigurd, including those without statistics to count who emulated his game due to it being a Japan-only title and having multiple translation patches out there. With the many translations of FE4 out there, there is clearly western interest in playing it, to the point where just one translation just isn't good enough. However, the problem with Sigurd is that he is a Japan-only character with lesser appeal to overseas gamers. This is where Eliwood comes in.

Eliwood's game also sold well, ranked second on this list, almost topping a million sales. You can also see Sigurd's climb in sales over the past few years in comparison to the other chart, and how it even manages to contend well with overseas releases in the series. Eliwood is the main character of Fire Emblem, the seventh title of the series, the first Fire Emblem game to come overseas, and possibly the most overall discussed and celebrated Fire Emblem outside of Japan. He has a very similar build and the same class as Sigurd, being the only unit in the series after Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War to boast the title of "Knight Lord."

Why Sigurd when it comes to Jugdral?
He is one of the most prominent characters in his own game. Being the main hero from the get-go, he stays the main focus of the story until Chapter 5. Even beyond that, the second generation is about carrying on his legacy and visions of peace, where he still makes a direct appearance at one point.

Seliph isn't as much of a main focus as Sigurd, and doesn't appear until after halfway through the game. He does cameo in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, though it is incredibly brief. Aside from that, he doesn't match Eliwood in build as well as Sigurd, but I would love to see Seliph as an alternate costume on Lucina, both being wielders of an evolved form of Falchion and the only second generation lords in the series.

Leif's role is minor in Holy War, and Thracia 776 doesn't boast the popularity or praise of Holy War. Despite this, it is one of my absolute favorite Fire Emblem titles. However, I would love to see Leif become a fighter, at least something more than a palette on Marth. He has an incredible amount of moveset potential with the Light Sword plus Thracia's unique blend of swords, and the weaponmaster potential of being a Master Knight from Holy War, which features much more potential than Sigurd+Eliwood. However, he wouldn't work with the Sigurd+Eliwood bundle idea that would boom incredibly well, and he already has Awakening DLC, so he doesn't need Smash inclusion as much as the other two to become Fates DLC.

Levin/Lewyn is my #1 choice for Genealogy, being a main character in both generations and far from a conventional weapon user, with wind magic having massively untapped potential. However, he wouldn't work for the Sigurd+Eliwood bundle idea. I strongly support his inclusion, and I occasionally throw in ballot votes and feedback for him, but I don't feel like I can actively run multiple support threads at once, as evidenced by how my MegaMan.EXE topic was too much for me to handle during my Roy support days, and how I let at least a few people down by abandoning that thread. If you do feel for me here, throw in a vote real quick if you want.

Why Eliwood when it comes to Elibe?
He is the game's main character and objectively its most important, being the most focused-on and developed character throughout the game. The story revolves around his struggles specifically, even in Hector Mode. Lyndis and Hector are there to support him, as secondary and tertiary lords.

Lyndis is already an Assist Trophy. Making her a fighter would cut that content from the game. Furthermore, while she is the game's first lord, she is not its main character by any stretch. Her Assist Trophy role fits her, as she serves as a supporting character once the first stretch of the game ends. Many use the argument of her being unique compared to other swordsmen, but she is just as much of a conventional swordsman as Eliwood, and blade+bow combat is already utilized via Link, Young Link, Toon Link, Pit, and Dark Pit. There are no Smash characters who use lances or mounting and dismounting as mechanics, while several characters already wield the only weapon combination Lyndis does. She's stuck in the position of adding either another sword+bow user or another pure swordsman. I wouldn't mind her playable, but only after several other more unique Fire Emblem fighters make it.

Hector is also talked about at times. I don't find him as unique as Eliwood, and I didn't even find him as unique as Roy's declone potential. Ike already exists as a slow movement, slow attack fighter with a lot of power, so Hector's role feels a bit redundant. Axes can go a long way, though they don't have as much as lances compared to swords in terms of how much unique stuff could be done in Smash. On top of that, Eliwood has the mount/dismount mechanics available, even a permanent mount would boast more unique attributes than Hector. Hector himself is FE7's tertiary lord, and fails to take a main lord role from anything other than a gameplay standpoint even in the optional Hector Mode, which is only unlocked when Fire Emblem is completed once in Eliwood Mode. I don't like the idea of Hector in Smash at this point, but it could go well in a future Smash title if Eliwood, Lyndis, and Hector are brought in as a Pokemon Trainer deal if FE7 is ever remade.

Alongside that, there was a previous Eliwood support thread for Smash 4 which received nothing but praise on the idea of Eliwood as a character being playable.
http://smashboards.com/threads/father-of-a-veteran-eliwood-for-smash-4.362155/

Why a 6th Fire Emblem rep? We have enough!
Sakurai does not mention once in his four criteria (mentioned earlier, which Sigurd+Eliwood go above and beyond in) that representatives of series have "earned it" or "are too many" or stuff like that. It's all a mental block created by the Smash community, which has no relevance or place as an argument for or against characters. If you really want to balance out series representation and such, you can start by supporting threads of those series rather than trying to shut down requests for other characters. Fire Emblem is my #1 favorite series, so I will always welcome the idea of more Fire Emblem characters in Smash. Many love Sigurd and Eliwood, so they will support the idea of them being playable, or at least Fates DLC and Eliwood for Project M.

Besides, Fire Emblem being represented more wouldn't be without merit.
Fire Emblem is currently going strong. With Hoshido and Nohr coming overseas to the 3DS with over 300,000 sales in Japan in its first week, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem coming to the Wii U, Roy's DLC in Super Smash Bros. doing incredibly well, and the revival of the TCG hitting the trading card market, Fire Emblem is currently one of Nintendo's largest franchises.
Besides the current state and the future of the series, Fire Emblem also has strong roots. The series spans back to the 90's with over a dozen games across multiple generations of Nintendo platforms, featuring hundreds of unique characters, each with their own backstory, personality, and stats. Is it really bad that only five of those characters are represented?

If you truly do not want these characters as reps in Smash, you are still free to support their inclusion in Project M, future Fire Emblem content, or even future Smash titles, which have support methods near the beginning of the thread.

Are these guys even relevant?
Very much so.
They were featured as Bonus Box fighters in Awakening, as free content for throwbacks and recruitable units to previous games in the series.
Not only that, but they had items titled "Eliwood's Blade" and "Sigurd's Lance" which could be found, forged, and used, and the characters themselves had many appearances on the DLC maps with unique dialogue.
Eliwood was featured in the original Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem trailer. With that, he is also the father of Roy, a recent DLC character who has amassed incredible popularity since his sm4sh debut.
Sigurd is a popular figure to fans of SRPG's, and he could be used alongside localization of his game for strong relevancy for both.
More DLC is coming to Fates, and Sigurd and Eliwood are likely candidates for it. This thread only aims to boost their chances further.

More will be added to the thread as time passes. For now, I'd like to see who is interested in the playability of these characters, or at least their DLC for Fire Emblem: Fates, potential inclusion for Project M, and potential inclusion in future Smash titles. If this thread has sold you or at least interested you on the possibility of these characters, I hope you decide to stick around! :grin:

CLINGING TO ROY'S PERFECT BICEP
Lovely OP, Ream. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this definitely did not disappoint in the slightest!

The mounted/unmounted moveset is an interesting idea. The idea of the horse having its own health bar too is a cool gimmick-- kinda like Luma to Rosalina, just... way bigger and not a puppet-like character... basically, it has a health bar. Neat! Splitting up the movesets between mounted and unmouted gives a pretty big range of weapons to showcase, too-- there's so much that Fire Emblem has to offer in that department. Heck, even swords can vary pretty crazily from sword to sword, so...
Also, I was curious about the grabbing. Glad to see the use of the chained javelin/tether as inspiration for at least the mounted grab, because I was specifically thinking something like that would be really cool. (Also happy about all the other callback animations to their games in the movesets.)

Between the two though, Sigurd. Sigurd is the bae.
Well, Eliwood is too. Both of them are.
But Sigurd.
The fact that him, Eliwood, and even Hector were left out of Awakening's fancy DLC even is a travesty. Well, maybe not a travesty, but you get the point. I'm happy that Sakurai at least gave Roy a nice Eliwood palette swap scheme in Sm4sh, though.

Not to mention, the thought of Seisen no Keifu potentially getting an official localization if something like this happened is enough to make me jump on this support train faster than Sigurd on Deirdre (which is pretty fast). It would be great to see some increased interest in the older FE titles, even before the GBA ones, and Seisen no Keifu is totally deserving of some localization love. v-v
continues to prod about eldigan. will never stop prodding about eldigan. i'm sorry, i just really like eldigan.

Another impressive read. I was a little unsure of how a horse would actually work within Smash, but your idea sounds pretty good - and dismounting shows off another less well-known FE mechanic, so what's not to love about it? Nice selection of weaponry, too; magic swords don't come up too often, so those would be interesting to see, and lances automatically beat out the "no more swordsmen" argument. I love the moveset too - if we got that, I'd main it no matter how overpowered or underpowered or whatever-powered it ended up being, even if only to see some HD versions of those awesome GBA attack animations.

also, if this would mean a Sigurd amiibo and/or an official FE4 localisation, that alone is reason enough for me to support it :p I always found it odd how Sigurd and Eliwood missed out on the Awakening DLC party (though in Sigurd's case, Seliph does seem to be the more popular of the two in Japan, if the quantity of fanart for him is any indication) - so time to fix that! :p

One little slip-up I spotted was, under "dismounted moveset", you have the down-B listed as "dismount" again - I presume you meant "remount"?

So, guys. I want to get this thread out there more to the Fire Emblem and Smash communities. What do you suggest for the most success? I'd at least like to see its potential to bring Eliwood to Fates+PM and Sigurd to anything possible realized.

Nice to see more Eliwood support! I voted for him on the Smash Ballot too. I wrote about how he could wield a variety of weapons, leaving Durandal for his Final Smash and maybe even include Ninian as part of his Final Smash as a nice reference to the final chapter. Bringing a variety of weapons as well as a horse, he'd be nothing like his boy, Roy. I thought of that Eliwood/Sigurd combo too. They'd be great additions. Special attacks could be named after Ninian's rings, maybe even with some reference to their effects.

I'd like add a little contribution to the move set by adding axes and a hammer into the mix.

Also, for more Eliwood palettes: Nergal, Marcus, Lowen.

I like the axes idea since he uses them in FE6. I plan to add this to the op once I have more time to truly dig into it.

Left this on the ballot, would have included so much more if there wasn't a 500 character limit, including what he could use (axes and more elaboration on "special blades" and what differentiates lances/javelins)

Some want Roy to see a full declone or English VA, but it’s best to keep Melee roots. Some want a truly unique FE debut, one with a lance or new mechanics. Why not add a similar character to Roy, his dad? There’s lots of reveal potential, & the two can differ incredibly. Eliwood can be what some wanted on Roy or an FE debut. He is the main character of our 1st overseas title, our most popular besides FE13, which has 2 fighters. Eliwood can use lances, javelins, special blades, and maybe a horse.

He could use the Wind Sword, Light Brand and the Runesword. While Roy brings his talent for short-range combat, Eliwood would bring his skill at managing multiple weapons to keep opponents on their toes. His moveset would also incorporate references to other mounted classes from the Fire Emblem games. Yes, that 500 character limit can be annoying. Also, yes, an English VA to empathize FE7's role as the first localized FE.

Thanks for letting us know. Go vote, people! One more month before the ballot closes!
Another thing before I forget: >Air or f air: Hammer Strike. A downwards hammer strike with its sweetspot being in the hammer's center causing a Meteor Smash effect. Since hammers are classified as axes in the FE world and with him having a C level in axes, he's quite able to use them as weapons.
