Should I tap jump? And if not, what should I do?

People find it easier to tap jump to do short hops, but I don't really use it, I'm more of a button jumper, jumping with the a button to jump out of shield to do a aerial attacks. It takes some getting use to to short hops with the jump button, but I find it better in the long run.

It's entirely preference. I find it easier to do literally everything without tapjump.

And obviously, if you choose not to tapjump, you should assign another button to jump. I recommend X, Y, or A (I use A to jump and X/Y to attack cuz I'm weird).

Thanks!
Also, OH MY GOD SOMEONE ELSE WHO MAINS MARTH IN SM4SH
I hop around so much on mains, but seeing as I played him in basically the rest of the series, it's hard for me to not still consider him my main. That said, if I didn't play customs-on I'd probably hit Random more often than not.

But more on-topic, Marth relies a lot on utilt and uair, so I definitely recommend not using tap-jump for him.

Despite what some say, it does make a difference. Using X/Y is better because you have more horizontal mobility in the air.

Well, more accurately, it's easier to have horizontal control, as your control stick isn't going to be pointed up from the jump. But just like how it's "harder" to do certain out-of-shield actions with buttonjump, it's really just a matter of practice and preference.

But you're absolutely correct. It's far easier to control horizontal mobility if you use buttonjump.

Personally I find it simplier if you use X/Y for jumping. Tap jump makes some confusion when I want to do an Utilt, Uspecial or Usmash, so I deactivated this option. I don't have any problems now. Also, you can use left stick for other things, such as horizontal moves, something pretty difficult if you use it for jumping too...

On top of what people are saying, it also depends on which character you use. Yoshi, for example, pretty much requires tap jump off because you don't wanna waste your flutter jump while tossing out SH eggs.
