This was something that was brought up in the Roster Discussion thread and I thought this would be a really good topic to get a larger audience involved with.

So, some of us have been talking for or against the idea that instead of releasing the two games simultaneously, one is released first and the second comes at some later time. What would happen in this scenario is that the Wii U version would come out first with the 3DS one at some later time. One thing I figured they could do with this is to make the 3DS version an updated version of the Wii U version with new characters that couldn't be added in time for the Wii U version - got to meet those deadlines after all. Meanwhile, a physical release of the update could be available on the WiiU online with a DLC option to either unlock the DLC with a bought key or to use the 3DS version to unlock the new characters.

What do you of separate releases?

If they were released at different times, the 3DS version would released first and be different from the Wii U version.
I don't like ports, I want them to be different.

There is no way the two games will get released at different times no game in history has ever done that. They are going to be cross compatible there is no reason to take that feature away by releasing them separately. Nintendo needs to release the wii u version ASAP because of its struggles hopefully they know that releasing the 3DS version without the other would upset wii u owners and further their problems.

Credit? I'm just saying that I think it would be in their best interest that if they can only release the game on either WiiU or 3DS and wait a while for the other, I would have it on WiiU. Everyone knows that 95% of the time, it's the console games that get the most hype. Then coming out with an enhanced portable release will keep the market momentum strong, especially if the first version gets updated to match the 3DS release.

Two words:
Animal Crossing
This is probably the most relevant example barring Pokemon. Dobutsu no Mori was originally on the N64. Come 2002, we got Animal Crossing on the Gamecube as an enhanced port of sorts. In Japan, the game was released as Dobutsu no Mori+ in 2001 and then an additional update to align with the American version's additions was released as Dobutsu no Mori e+ in 2003.

The two aren't really comparable. Smash Bros. isn't and wasn't a text-based game (therefore requiring tons of localization) that was released near the end of the N64's lifespan (GC was released November 2001 in US, Dobutsu no Mori was released April 2001 in JPN).

Anyway I see this as a fan's hope that a staggered release would mean more characters/their favorite character getting in. I don't think Sakurai is shy about pushing deadlines or settling for anything less than what he considers perfection, so I really wouldn't count on this.

I can see them doing this, but only if they can't meet a deadline or are having other development issues. With the Wii U basically being irrelevant, I'd focus all resources on that version if I were them. Otherwise no, I think it would be pointless to do this when they can release both and update both over time.
