"I have been waiting patiently for the perfect moment to make my grand entrance. The final act belongs to me!"

"Hershel Layton... I hope you are prepared to play your part!"

Overview:

Jean Descole first debuted in “Professor Layton and the Last Specter” for the Nintendo DS in 2011, the first game of the prequel trilogy of the Layton series, where he appeared as the main antagonist. Since then, he has appeared in all the subsequent Layton games minus “Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney”. Descole also appeared as the main villain in the Professor Layton movie, “Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva”. To name all of his evil works:

  • Last Specter: Works with Misthallery’s corrupt police chief, Chief Levin Jakes, to prevent Professor Layton from interfering with his plans in Misthallery. He also orders Chief Jakes to alter Evan Barde’s will to Clark Triton instead of giving it to Arianna Barde, his daughter.
  • Last Specter: Kidnaps Doland Noble, the Triton family’s butler, and disguises as him in order to fool the Triton family. Brenda Triton, Luke’s mom, gets suspicious about it, so Descole kidnaps her as well. Clark Triton, Luke’s father, eventually finds out, but Descole blackmails him to keep quiet. Layton later exposes Descole’s Doland Noble disguise.
  • Last Specter: Uses a large, excavating machine to destroy Misthallery in order to find the Golden Garden.
  • Eternal Diva: Works with Oswald Whistler, a musical director, to help him transfer Melina Whistler's (Oswald’s deceased daughter) memories to another girl
  • Eternal Diva: He is revealed to be the master mind behind the game of eternal life (watch the movie to understand how the game of eternal life unfolds because it would require a long explanation on my part). He wanted to help with Melina’s memory transfer because he knew Melina was the Ambrosia queen reborn (Layton concludes this by the end of the movie, but it can be safe to assume Descole figured it out first), and her voice would be required to bring forth Ambrosia
  • Eternal Diva: Uses another large, excavating machine to destroy the surrounding island in order to unearth Ambrosia after failing to use Melina’s voice to do so
  • Miracle Mask: Writes a letter to Randall Ascott telling him that Henry Ledore married Angela Ledore, Randall’s girlfriend in his teenage years, and stole the Azran wealth Randall technically found first. The thing is, Randall had amnesia at the time of the letter, and Descole was actually lying to him about that (not knowing the actual truth behind Henry and Angela Ledore’s relationship). Thus, Randall bought into Descole’s lies.
  • Miracle Mask: Uses Randall Ascott to terrorize Monte d’Or by having him dress up as the Masked Gentleman and perform “miracles” that Descole helped pull off as well. The final miracle would have destroyed the city so that Descole could easily find the Nautilus Chamber (Infinite Vault in the UK version) of Akbadain.
  • Azran Legacy: Works with Layton to find the five Azran aura stones for most of the game in order to create the single Azran keystone that will be used to find the greatest Azran Legacy. Once the keystone is created, he steals it.

Descole initially appears to be a cold-hearted, psychopathic scientist who only seeks destruction and glory, but as it later turns out, he is only doing everything he can to uncover the secrets of the Azran civilization, an ancient and highly advanced civilization that lived eons ago before humans in the Layton world came into being. The reason he is going all out in uncovering the Azran’s secrets is to avenge Targent, a criminal, militarized organization that is after the Azran’s greatest legacy, for taking away his parents when he was child and killing his wife and daughter in his adulthood years. It’s because of this he is very desperate for revenge (hence why he resorts to destruction to find an Azran secret).

And for those that want a more detailed backstory about his tragic past:

Want to know what’s even more shocking? Layton and Descole are BROTHERS! Yes, if Descole were to be in Smash Bros, Mario and Luigi wouldn’t be the only brother duo to be playable. You might be asking, “If Layton and Descole are brothers, why are they at odds with each other?” To understand this, we’ll need to take a deeper look at Descole’s.

Layton and Descole were originally known as Theodore Bronev and Hershel Bronev respectively. They lived with their birth parents in a rural village in their childhood years, and their father (and supposedly their mother as well) was an archeologist who heavily researched the Azran. One day, however, things took a tragic turn. Their parents were kidnapped by Targent for their Azran research, leaving Theodore and Hershel as orphans. Some time later, an old couple named the Laytons heard about the situation and wanted to adopt the child named Hershel. Knowing this, Hershel and Theodore switched their first names on the last second so that Theodore could live a happy life while Hershel would continue studying the Azran on his own to eventually beat Targent to the Azran Legacy. Thus, the original Theodore Bronev became "Hershel Layton".

Jean Descole (left, formerly Hershel Bronev) and Professor Layton (right, formerly Theodore Bronev) when they were children and lived together

Eventually, the new Theodore Bronev would be adopted by a new family, and he would be given the name “Desmond Sycamore”. As Desmond, he continued to research the Azran in the following years. After a while, he became a professor and was considered as the authority of Azran research. He eventually met Raymond, his butler who would accompany everywhere with him since they first met, and Desmond later had a wife and daughter. However, Targent eventually returned; this time, to recruit Desmond. Desmond declined, and as a result, Targent killed his wife and daughter.

At this point, Desmond turned into the alias we all know him as: Jean Descole. It was also around this time he learns his birth mother, Rachel Bronev, died in captivity years ago, and that is birth father, Leon Bronev, is now Targent’s leader. Thanks to the events that just transpired, he despises his birth father and wants to beat Targent to the Azran Legacy even more than he previously did. As for Professor Layton? Truth be told, he does care for Layton a lot, evident with the events in their childhood. He’s just mad at Layton because he knows he will get in his way in uncovering the Azran secrets.

It should be noted that Descole does appear as Desmond, his true self, during the majority of Azran Legacy. This is because he realizes he needs to work with Layton in order to take down Targent at this point, and he knows Layton will eventually realize Descole’s true intentions (Layton doesn't even remember his childhood past until Descole reminds him of that late in their adventure when they are forced to team up within the Azran Sanctuary). Because Layton has never seen Descole unmasked, Descole could easily appear as his true identity without Layton noticing. Desmond represents the man’s hope because he is calm and righteous, while Descole is the man’s despair because he is angry and desperate. Both aliases, however, still carry a noticeable hatred for Targent.

Descole's Chances for a Smash Bros fighter inclusion

As of right now, Descole's chances to appear as a playable DLC fighter are very slim. Why? Simply put, Professor Layton has the higher priority for getting into the roster. Professor Layton is the main star of his own video game series, and going off of third party inclusions in the past, the star character of that third party series will be the one to join Smash Bros. Professor Layton also has far more support for a Smash Bros inclusion, while Descole's support for Smash Bros is very minimal.

It seems like things are looking grim for Descole's chances for a Smash Bros inclusion, but does that mean we should abandon all hope? NOT AT ALL! Even if his chances are that slim, it is still possible to generate support for this character, which is one reason why this thread was created. In fact, Ryu's inclusion into Smash Bros slightly opened the doors for him. How so? Even though Ryu and Megaman are from different video game series, Ryu became the second Capcom rep on the roster. Thus, it has opened the doors for third parties to include at least two characters from any of their games. That in mind, if we were to look at Descole only for the fact he is third party, then Professor Layton and him would not only represent the Layton series but also the Level 5 company as a whole.

Now for the second Level 5 rep (if this happens), Descole has major competition with Jibanyan, another popular pick for a Level 5 rep. However, even amongst this dark situation for Descole, Descole does have several things going for him for a possible Smash Bros inclusion:

Let's first establish why the Professor Layton series could have two character slots on the Smash roster. For starters, Level 5 and Nintendo have a very good relationship with each other. The Inazuma Eleven anime, a Level 5 work, appeared on the Nintendo Anime Channel in the past. More importantly, Nintendo is in charge of licensing all of the Level 5 games for the international audience, so the Professor Layton games are Nintendo games to a certain degree. The Layton series has also been one of the Nintendo's flagship series for the portable consoles (the DS and the 3DS). Sales were especially strong for the series with the first four games, but not so much with the last two. However, Miracle Mask was the best-selling 3DS launch title when the 3DS was first released in Japan. Keeping all of this in mind, one can see why there is some chance the Layton series could have two reps. Now, we'll move to other important reasons as to why Descole could be worth the Smash Bros inclusion.

1) Descole is a major character in the Layton series, being the main villain of the prequel trilogy games and the movie.

2) Because he is a major character from the three most recent Layton games, he is a current video game character that newer players could easily recognize. Examples of characters that got into the recent Smash roster because of the fact they debuted fairly recently include Greninja, Shulk, Robin, Lucina, and any other characters that debuted in 2010 or after. It should also be noted that two of the franchises that included newer video game characters also had older characters of their franchise participate as well: in Pokemon’s case, Pikachu/Charizard/Jigglypuff/Mewtwo are old school reps because they came out with Pokemon’s debut, while in Fire Emblem’s case, Marth is the old school rep because he was released with the Fire Emblem’s debut. In the Layton series case, Professor Layton would obviously be the old school rep (in addition to being the series icon), while Descole would be a new school rep.

3) Many smashers highlight the lack of villains in the Smash Bros roster. Well, guess what? Descole is a villain who can really fight! The more villains on the roster, the better! Furthermore, almost none of the villains on the roster are tragic villains (Mewtwo is the only exception, but that's only if you consider that Mewtwo to be the one from the first movie). That being said, Descole would be the first true tragic villain on the Smash roster.

4) Descole is shown to be an incredibly capable fighter in the prequel trilogy and the movie. In Eternal Diva and Azran Legacy, we learn Descole is equipped with a sword and is a very capable fencer. In Miracle Mask, we learn that he is a capable brawler too (even if Descole easily got kneed in the gut because he whiffed a punch, we still saw Descole’s fighting potential).

Descole and Layton having their fencing duel in Eternal Diva

5) Descole is shown to be a brilliant inventor throughout the prequel trilogy. In Last Specter, he built the Mecha Specter, a robotic, excavating, digging machine used to smash through Misthallery in order to find the Golden Garden. In the movie, he builds another excavating machine called the Detra-Gigant in order to find Ambrosia by destroying the island surrounding it. In Miracle Mask, we don’t see any sort of “gadget intelligence” for most of the story. However, in one of the first Japanese trailers for the game, we see a clip from a cutscene that didn’t appear in the final release where Descole uses a mechanical rope in order to latch onto the rising Azran walls (pictured below). In Azran Legacy, we learn that Descole built the Bostonius, a high tech aircraft with flight and fighting capabilities. Why am I mentioning all of this? It’s because one can come up with an original moveset for Descole where Descole could use various gadgets to demonstrate his scientific genius from the games, similar to how Bowser Jr. had a largely original moveset created in order to highlight his connection to high tech inventions.

Descole using a mechanical rope in a cutscene that appeared in the very first Japanese trailer for Miracle Mask but doesn't appear in the final game.

6) Descole is also shown to be very knowledgeable about the Azran civilization. The Azran were particularly advanced in technology and science, creating many inventions that demonstrate just that. For another unique spin, Descole could use Azran artifacts/weapons in his moveset to highlight his intelligence with the Azran history, which would also highlight his archeological side.

7) If there's anything that Descole is a parallel to the original Layton trilogy's villain, Don Paolo, it's his excellent ability of disguise. In Smash Bros, we are yet to see a fighter that can transform into someone else, and Descole is one of those characters that can be capable of that. This would give him another original aspect to his moveset. Though my moveset idea for Descole you'll soon read didn't incorporate this concept, one can find a way to make this idea possible in Smash Bros.

The two times in the series when we saw Descole masterfully disguise as someone else.

8) Out of all of the main characters in the Layton series aside from Professor Layton, Descole is the only character that is seen as a true fighter. Characters like Emmy, Grosky, Don Paolo, Anton, and Clive only have one sort of fighting skill, those being limited to brawling, fencing, and inventing/using weapons respectively to that character. Characters like Luke, Flora, Chelmey, Barton, Granny Riddleton don’t have a distinguishable moveset to come up with right away since they demonstrate no fighting abilities in the series. Descole, on the other hand, is capable of the three main fighting styles: brawling, fencing, and weapon-use (through his gadgets). Being capable of all three of them, he can be a very unique fighter in Smash because of his diverse moveset (Yes, Link is similar in that he can use all three fighting styles as well, but the thing is, the only physical moves Link has are his Neutral Air, Back Aerial, Forward Throw, Back Throw, and Down Throw). As you’ll see, my moveset for Descole puts all three fighting styles together and tries to even them out to demonstrate his diverse fighting style.

Descole demonstrating his brawling capabilities in Miracle Mask
9) Did I mention he's got an amazing theme? Well, have a listen! The one on the left is the Last Specter version, while the one on the right is the live version which has been used since Miracle Mask (and it's my personal favorite of the two). You are probably going to like Descole more after hearing both versions!

Descole and Smash Bros

"Well now, I believe the time has come!"

Costume Ideas:

In addition to the default color, Descole would also have the following seven costume colors, all of which are based off different characters from the Layton series that share some sort of relationship with him:
  • Raymond Color
  • Leon Bronev color
  • Targent uniform color
  • Leonard Bloom color
  • Masked Gentleman color
  • Doland Noble color
  • Aurora Color
And now for one appealing gimmick: You can also play as Desmond Sycamore (pictured below), Descole’s true identity, as an alternate costume as well!

Desmond has the same eight costume colors as mentioned above, bringing the total to 16 costumes for Descole. Yes, this is supposed to be exactly like the Little Mac treatment, where the normal Little Mac has eight costumes and the alternate costumed wire-frame Little Mac has the same eight costumes like the normal Little Mac has.

As Desmond Sycamore is an alternate costume for Descole, they both share the same movesets entirely. However, one thing that will make him unique from other characters is that his alternate costume will have different idle animations, taunts, and victory animations. The reason for this is meant to highlight the difference in personalities between Descole and Desmond. In the games, Descole is described to symbolize “the man’s despair” and desperation for revenge, while Desmond is meant to represent “the man’s hope” and calm approach. Of course, there are a few minor differences between the two, but those minor differences usually come with the aesthetics of their animations. Luckily, I will explain those minute differences just to be safe.

Rather than calling him "Professor Sycamore" as he is called in the games, I have decided to use his first name for Smash Bros because there is another Professor Sycamore in the video game world, the one from the Pokemon X and Y (except he is named "Augustine Sycamore" and not "Desmond Sycamore), and he just so happens to already have a trophy in Smash Bros 4. Thus, to avoid confusion, it would be best to refer to him as "Desmond." Plus, you'll get to see the similarities b/w him and Descole based off their names (note they both begins with "Des").

Moveset Ideas:

Basic Animations:

Entrance: Descole is seen riding on the back of the same miniature airplane he uses to escape The Nest in Azran Legacy. Just like in the games, Raymond can be seen piloting the plane, and Descole hangs on to the edge of the back seat just like when he flees from Layton in the Azran Legacy. The plane flies from the top of the screen much like the Arwings do in Fox and Falco’s entrance animations, except the difference here is that Descole is not inside the plane. When the plane is close to the ground, he jumps off and lands gracefully.

Descole riding his "escape plane" in Azran Legacy while carrying the Azran Keystone (take a good look at it because I will talk about it later on). How you see Descole riding the plane would be how his entrance animation begins.

Standing: He stands casually like he does in the games with a slight smile on his face. In addition, if you are playing as Descole and not Desmond, his cape covers most of his body just like it normally does in the games. However, if you are fighting on a stage where there is a lot of wind (like Corneria), his cape will blow with the wind and reveal the rest of his body. Of course, in his other animations like jumping, falling, helpless, side-stepping, etc, his cape will flow in respect to whatever movement makes his cape move.

Descole standing

Walk: He walks casually just like he does in the games. However, he has one of the faster walks out of all the fighters.

Run: He dashes just like he does in Miracle Mask when he tries to dodge all of the bullets that are gunning him down by Targent (a.k.a, his body hangs low and forward as he sprints, similar to Marth’s running animation; the difference here is that Descole has his arms open to his sides when he does so. He has one of the faster dashes in the game, just as fast as Greninja's to be exact.

Descole running during this scene in Miracle Mask is how his running animation would look like in Smash Bros

Jump: Descole performs a high jump into the air. He has one of the highest jumps in the game, rivaling that of Falco’s. The reason why he has such a high jump is to reference to the scene when he escapes Layton and co. after he is exposed in Miracle Mask (takes place before the credits). With his second jump, he performs a vertical flip into the air very similar to Link, Marth, and Lucina's second jumps, except Descole’s version goes higher.

Fall: His fall animation looks like his fall after performing the high jump in Miracle Mask, where he has both arms sticking out in a Y formation, and one of his legs sticks out while the other sticks in. His falling animation is pretty fast, but just a tad bit slower than Layton’s because Layton is supposed to be heavier.

Falling

Helpless: Descole sticks both his arms and legs out wide open. This is supposed to match his giant leap from the Nautilus Chamber of Akbadain during the ending of Miracle Mask.

Helpless

Crouch: Descole bends down to the point his body is almost curled. One knee is bending while touching the ground, while the other knee is bent upward while his body leans on it. One arm has the hand on the ground, while the other arm hangs over his bent upward knee. As Descole, his cape covers his entire body while crouching, but you can find out how his body position for the crouching position if you play on a windy course like Corneria. As Desmond, you will be able to see his entire body when he crouches regardless of the stage because he doesn’t wear a cape.

Crawl: Descole crawls in the same fashion as Zero Suit Samus does, having the same crawling speed as she does. Just like his crouching animation, Descole’s cape covers his entire body unless there’s wind involved. If you are playing as Desmond, you will always see how he crawls.

Shield: Descole grabs one side of his cape, slightly turns, and holds it over half of his face for the shield animation (the other arm is held over his chest). As Desmond, it’s a similar animation, except without the cape; he simply holds one arm over half of his face with his hand held as a fist, while the other arm is still being held over his chest.

Rolling: He does a rather generic roll behind the opponent

Side-step: Descole steps back and briefly throws one of his arms to the side to let his cape loose before grabbing it with the same hand again to return back to his shield position. In Desmond’s case, he simply steps back and sticks out whatever hand was shielding his face and throws it to the side before returning back to his shield position.

Dizzy: He stumbles from left to right very similar to other fighters’ dizzy animations; except here, he holds his head while doing so.

Sleep: His position is much like Captain Falcon’s sleeping animation. When playing as Descole, his cape will be behind his back this time around because he extends both of his arms before falling asleep.

Idle Animations: In one animation, Descole pulls out one of his arms and adjusts his hat, very similar to one of his normal animations during dialogue in the games. In another, he nudges his mask at its bridge. He can also hold his hand and change into a thinking position.

In Desmond’s case, two of his idle animations are very similar. Like Descole’s, he changes into a thinking position for one of his animations. In another, he adjusts his glasses the same way Descole adjusts his mask. Desmond's only new idle animation here would be him changing to the same “battle ready” position. This position is supposed to match the same pose he makes when he confronts Bronev at the Obsidian Tower in Azran Legacy; the difference here is that Desmond would have a slightly angry face, not a complete-rage one like he makes towards Bronev.

Swimming: As Professor Layton would swim the breast-stroke, Descole swims the butterfly stroke.

About to Drown: Looks the same just like the rest of the fighters for this animation.

Drowning: Looks exactly like the majority of Smash fighters' drowning animations. If you are playing as Descole, you will be able to see his suit as he drowns because the way his cape moves when traveling down water involves physics.

Screams: When he is launched far, Descole let’s out a scream similar to the one right before he jumps off the Nautilus Chamber in Miracle Mask, except the difference here is that it would sound more pained than determined. When he is KOd, he lets out a pained grunt that sounds just like when he is tossed aside by Bronev in the same game and when he is “dying” in Layton’s arm after revealing his true identity to him. His occasional KO scream, much like what other fighters have (example: Pit sometimes saying “I’m done for” when KOd) would be him saying a dramatic and angry “no!” that sounds similar to when he says exactly that after his Mecha Specter shuts down in Last Specter, except the difference here is that the “no” wouldn’t be said as long.

With Desmond’s case, he would scream a pained “Aagghhh” when launched far. One of his KO screams would be a simple “Guuuuugghhh” that would be similar to the grunt Descole gives out, except this grunt doesn’t begin with a vowel. His occasional KO scream would be him saying “How vexing!” This is one of his puzzle incorrect quotes from Azran Legacy, except the Smash Bros version would sound more pained and fading instead of normal toned.

Screen KO: Descole would smash onto the screen head on. Upon hitting the screen, his arms would be shaped in a “square-Y” shape, and one leg would be bent while the other would be straight. With Desmond’s case, he has the same position, except here, you’ll see his pained face in more detail. Specifically, it mirrors his “surprised/angry” face from Azran Legacy (hard for me to describe what scenes trigger that face, but if you played the game, you’d know what I’m talking about).

Star KO Scream: This would be an original scream because the only other star KO scream I can think of is when he falls off the Detra-Gigant in the movie, but at the time, Descole had a different voice actor, hence why I think there should be an original scream for his star KO. However, his Japanese voice will use that same scream from that very scene in the movie because his Japanese voice actor doesn’t change at all during the duration of the prequel trilogy. Desmond, on the other hand, would have a much different star KO scream. In fact, his wouldn’t be a scream at all. Instead, he says, “What unfortunate luck!” with a fading, injured voice as he flies through the sky.

Basic Attacks:

A: Delivers a quick punch that deals a small amount of damage.

AA: Delivers a quick roundhouse kick (using whichever leg matches which side of his body that delivered the punch) that deals slightly more damage than his first jab. He lowers his leg instead of spinning around upon finishing the double jab.

AAA: Quickly pulls out his sword and delivers a quick diagonal slash that deals a bit more damage than the second jab. It cannot lead to a multi-hit jab like Greninja’s and Robin’s jabs, so Descole’s jabs are supposed to look a bit similar to how Shulk executes them.

Dash Attack: Performs a diagonal slash with his sword that works exactly like Marth’s/Lucina’s dash attack, except Descole’s version always deals 10% damage and has no tipper effect.

Tilt Attacks:

Front Tilt: Descole pulls out his sword and performs a quick swipe using it. This attack looks very similar to Marth’s, Lucina’s, and the Mii Swordfighter’s forward tilts, except Descole’s version is a tad bit quicker and deals 11% damage.

Up Tilt: Descole holds the end of a long, robotic arm that has stylized hand at the other end shaped in a way like it’s going to slap someone and swings the arm in an an arch. It does moderately strong damage and launches the opponent slightly upward like other up tilts.

Down Tilt: Descole holds the end of a long, robotic leg that has a stylized shoe at the other end, pointing upwards, and he pushes the leg forward while crouching. It’s also pretty strong, easily spammable, and has good reach for a down tilt.

Aerial Attacks:

Neutral Aerial: The Azran Keystone suddenly materializes right in front of Descole in an Azran-style fashion. As it does so, the keystone splits into five separate stones, or “eggs” so to speak because that’s how they look like. The five aura stones separate in a fashion where they look like you could draw a pentagon by connecting the dots, and after that, the five stones join as the single Azran Keystone again before dematerializing in an Azran-style manner. As the Azran Keystone separates, Descole slightly opens his arms to the side as if he is receiving something magical. The entire animation for this attack is very fast, and it deals moderate damage. It’s supposed to mimic Greninja’s neutral air, so you can imagine this attack is great for leading into combos.

Front Aerial: Descole delivers a frontal aerial kick that is moderately strong, similar in strength and reach to Greninja’s front air. Upon finishing the kick animation, he spins his body around to return to his falling animation.

Back Aerial: Descole performs a drop kick just like how Luigi performs his back air, except Descole's hits harder, has more knockback, and has slightly more reach. This is a great KO move at high percents.

Up Aerial: Descole swings his sword that mimics Marth’s/Lucina's up air, except Descole’s version does 1% more damage than Lucina's and does not have the tipper effect.

Down Aerial: Descole swings his sword that mimics Marth’s/Lucina’s down air, except Descole’s version does 2% more damage than Lucina’s, has no tipper/meteor effect, and has less ending lag.

As I based Layton’s throws around the various puzzles he solves in the game, I based Descole’s throws around the various Azran secrets that appear throughout the prequel trilogy. Again, Descole is obsessed with the Azran civilization, so in order to highlight this further, I decided to base his throwing moveset around that.

Throws:

Grab: Descole throws a mechanical rope (previously explained under the "Why Descole for Smash Bros" section) forward that can catch the opponent very much like Link's Grappling Hook, Lucas's snake, and ZSS's Plasma Whip (the mechanical rope has the same reach as the Plasma Whip too). You can also use the mechanical rope for tether recovery much like the listed three "rope grabs".

Pummel: Descole knees his opponent.

Forward Throw: Descole throws his opponent onto the ground. Upon throwing the opponent down, it deals 3% damage. When the throw animation begins, a circular, ancient sun tile appears beneath the opponent. It’s supposed to be the same Azran tile that appears in Puzzle 146 of Azran Legacy where Luke must step on all of those Azran tiles to reach the end point (occurs while Layton, Luke, and Descole team up while inside the Azran Sanctuary). When the opponent is thrown onto the ground, he/she lands on top of the Azran sun tile. Once he/she lands on the tile, it illuminates just like it does in Azran Legacy, except this time, the opponent bounces off the tile and receives 6% more damage. Bouncing off the tile launches the opponent forward instead of upward. In Azran Legacy, the sun tile doesn’t actually have a bounce effect, but I decided to use one to give an original spin to it.

Back Throw: Descole let’s go of his opponent, but when he does so, four ancient, Azran-style fans pop up from beneath the ground and are arranged in a circular pattern around Descole. As Descole let’s go of his opponent, he/she finds himself trapped by the winds being emitted by the fans. The opponent appears in his/her tumbling animation at that instant, and he/she is thrown around in a circle like a whirlind thanks to the unique wind patterns the fans emit. Descole simply stands still and watches with amusement as the opponent flies around him in circles. In fact, the opponent flies around Descole for two quick circles before Descole performs a side punch that throws the opponent behind him. This is one of the stronger back throws in the game, being second to Ness’s in terms of damage and knockback.

The back throw is a reference to the events in Hoogland, the wind village, during Chapter 4 of Azran Legacy. Upon first arriving at the village, Layton and co. (and remember, Descole is with them at this point in the game while appearing as his true self, Desmond Sycamore) endure a mysterious whirlwind that ends up destroying a small portion of town. After witnessing a mysterious marriage following the event, the crew must solve the mystery as to where the whirlwinds are coming from and the mystery behind the marriage. They are eventually led to an an Azran ruin where there are several ancient fans operating, and Layton must solve a puzzle in order to shut them off and retrieve the aura stone that is inside. It turns out the fans were an Azran contraption that allowed the Azran to control wind patterns within a given area (I’m not kidding about that; play the game and you’ll see it states exactly that), hence why there were whirlwinds in Hoogland. The fans that appear during Descole’s back throw resemble the Azran fans that appear at that point in the game, and the opponent getting flung around in circles is a reference to the destructive whirlwinds in Hoogland before the fans are turned off.

Up Throw: Descole let’s go of his opponent, but at that instant, he/she is suddenly trapped by a two ancient locks that pop up from beneath them and hold his/her feet in place. Descole then crouches down as if he notices something on the ground. Indeed, if you pause the match and zoom in, you’ll see an Azran-style contraption has suddenly popped up from beneath the ground in front of the two ancient locks. The contraption has four buttons that form a circular formation, and for a one-second animation, Descole touches two of those buttons, triggering an Azran wall to emerge from the beneath the ground that launches the opponent upwards. This attack does moderate damage for a throw yet has high knockback that is between Kirby's/MetaKnight’s and Mewtwo’s up throw. The wall also acts as a brief frontal shield for 2 seconds before disappearing.

The up throw is supposed to be a reference to the Nautilus Chamber of Akbadain from Miracle Mask, as the buttons resemble the ones that appear in the final puzzle in the game (the ones Layton and Angela, who is really Descole disguised as her during this moment in the game, step on), while the wall is dark blue in color and has Azran writings that appear on the actual chamber in the game.

Down Throw: Descole throws his opponent onto the ground as a miniaturized version of the same seal that covers the entrance to the Golden Garden from Last Specter (pictured below) suddenly arises beneath his/her feet. When Descole throws his opponent onto the ground, it does 3% damage. The opponent then finds him/herself lying on that seal, and Descole then performs a very small, somersaulting jump over the opponent. As he is about to land from the jump, he kicks the top of the seal (where the opponent’s head is). The kick does 7% damage, and the opponent is thrown upward, behind Descole in a way that looks much like Diddy Kong’s down throw. The seal also moves a very short distance following the kick before disappearing afterward.

The seal that covers the entrance to the Golden Garden in Last Specter

Smash Attacks:

Side Smash: He pulls out the Azran Keystone right in front of him as it delivers a large frontal blast that is exceptionally strong. When he charges the side smash, he holds the keystone underneath his arm before holding it outward when delivering the attack.

Up Smash: He pulls out the Azran Keystone and holds it up as it delivers a large blast that is just as powerful as his side smash. When he charges the up smash, he has one arm extended upward with his hand opened wide while the other arm is bent, held low, and carries the Azran Keystone. When delivering the attack, the two arms switch in terms of which is held high and which is held low.

Down Smash: He holds a miniaturized version of one of the Azran statue heads that shot him when he saves Luke from one in Azran Legacy. After charging it, the statue releases two quick, medium sized lasers from its eyes that shoot diagonally downward on both sides, delivering strong damage and knockback but not as much compared to his side and up smashes.

Special Moveset:

Normal Special: Robotic Pound

Descole pulls out a robotic arm that extends a short distance. The arm is the same one from the Mecha Specter (the smaller arm) he uses in Last Specter. The attack is chargeable; he will slowly raise the arm as the attack charges. The longer you hold, the higher the arm moves. The attack will reach maximum power after 3 seconds. Descole will let go and the hand part of the arm crashes down, delivering high damage and knockback depending on the charge time; it can also bury opponents for a brief amount of time if they are directly under it.. After the attack is finished, Descole will be immobile for 1 second by holding onto his shoulder .
  • Custom 1: Robotic Punch - Descole uses the arm as if it were a punch rather than crushing the opponent like the normal version (for a better visual, think of DK’s normal special but without the charge factor). It would deal decent damage and knockback; it is not chargeable, but it does have slightly farther range and no ending lag compared to the other two variations.
  • Custom 2: Robotic Slam - Descole uses the larger arm from the Mecha Specter in Last Specter, but smaller in size. This version has a longer charge time (6 seconds to be exact) and has the same power as Ganondorf’s Warlock Punch at peak power. Of course, the power version can also deal damage depending on how long you charge it. However, at full power, the attack has more ending lag, as Descole will be immobile for about 2 seconds.
Side Special: Acrobatic Assault

Descole flies a small, angular distance into the air. As he does this, he extends one leg out and the other in. If it catches someone, the opponent will be stunned, and he will lightly back flip into the air (directly above the target as he does so), then crush the fighter with both of his feet. If the opponent was stunned on the ground during this attack, the opponent will end up buried into the ground. If the opponent was stunned while in the air (which is possible), the attack will end up being a meteor spike, and Descole will bounce lightly off the opponent in both instances.
  • Custom 1: Fast Kick - Descole only uses the kick part of the attack, but the kick would deal more damage than the normal version.
  • Custom 2: Damaging Somersault - This would be similar to the normal version except the kick would be weaker and the somersault would be a lot higher and stronger, but Descole will have an even smaller bounce upon finishing the attack compared to the normal version.
I got the idea of this attack from Miracle Mask and Eternal Diva. The kick part of the attack is the same move Descole uses against one of the Targent officers in the Miracle Mask ending; he kicks the officer in the face with one foot, then steps on his face before jumping towards Bronev. However, the difference here is that instead of just jumping off the opponent, Descole performs a somersault into the air. The somersault looks very much like the one Descole does to dodge Layton’s attack when the two had their fencing duel in the movie.

Descole's somersault from this scene in Eternal Diva, during his duel with Professor Layton, served as the inspiration for the second part of Descole's side special.

Up Special: Eagle Wings

Descole performs a quick spin, and at the end of the spin, his cape transforms into a pair of eagle wings for a short time (in Desmond’s case, the spin ends with the wings suddenly opening up behind his back, like he made a suit that can create wings just for Smash bros). This attack is exactly like Pit and Dark Pit’s up special. The custom versions of this attack are even similar to theirs.
  • Custom 1: Piercing Soar - It is very much like Pit and Dark Pit’s “Striking Flight” (being that the angle of flight is restrained but can damage opponents along the way) except it would deal 10% damage, have slightly more knockback than Dark Pit’s version, and the strike effect would be colored black instead of blue/green.
  • Custom 2: Propelling Soar - It is very much like Pit and Dark Pit’s “Breezy Flight” (being that it has less distance and a “push-away effect”) except the main difference here is the aesthetics: Descole has a propeller on the front, back, and tips of each wing. The propellers would be smaller versions of the ones used on the Bostonius, his cruise ship he designed himself. In all three version, the wings disappear with a feathered “poof” sound, and Descole is then rendered into his helpless animation.
The Eagle Wings attack is based off the events from Miracle Mask; at the beginning of the game, the Masked Gentleman flies through Monte d’Or by transforming his cape into a a pair of eagle wings. The main difference here is that Descole doesn’t trigger this by reducing his cane, and the wings are colored dark gray instead of white/black. I remember reading on the Professor Layton wiki a while back that the “miracles” performed by the Masked Gentleman were not actual miracles but rather elaborate tricks performed by Descole. This makes sense considering that Descole and the Masked Gentleman team up throughout Miracle Mask, and I honestly believe that the Masked Gentleman’s cape was one of Descole’s inventions. After all, Descole is seen as a brilliant inventor throughout the series.

The Masked Gentleman's wing-transforming cape served as the inspiration for Descole's up special

Down Special: Sleep Bomb

Descole throws a sleep bomb at his opponents, and it travels for a small distance. The sleep bomb looks exactly like the ones Descole (or really Desmond at that point in the game) used against the Targent officers during Chapter 5 of Azran Legacy (when Professor Layton and co. are storming up Obsidian Tower to reach Bronev in order to retrieve the final Azran egg). The attack deals a very small amount of damage (about 4% to be exact), but it puts the opponent to sleep for about 2 seconds if it hits. This is a good attack for easily landing an attack on the opponent.
  • Custom 1: Smoke Bomb - This attack would involve a smoke bomb instead of a sleep bomb, and the smoke bomb works exactly like the smoke bomb item in the Smash Bros games (coincidentally, the Masked Gentleman used smoke bombs against Layton during the chase scene in Miracle Mask, and Raymond also used them in order to catch the Targent officers off guard during the final cutscene in the game). Considering that Descole used sleep bombs in Azran Legacy, I wouldn’t be surprised it was Descole who provided the Masked Gentleman and Raymond with smoke bombs).
  • Custom 2: Grenade - This attack uses a Grenade instead, and the grenade would very much work like Snake’s grenades in Brawl (even doing the same damage too), but the only difference here is that Descole throws the grenade instantly and can not hold on to it for a few seconds.
The grenade is more of an original concept for Descole, but I chose to go with such an idea for a custom move because of its close relation to the sleep and smoke bombs.

Final Smash: Mecha Specter

Descole pulls out a remote with a single button and presses it. As he does so, he says, “I’ll have my fun by destroying every single one of you!” (if you are playing as Desmond, he’ll instead say, “Looks like it’s time for the grand finale!”) The Mecha Specter from Last Specter (the smaller one is used for the Final Smash as partially pictured above, not the combined one) jumps onto the stage, and Descole then hops into the control seat of the specter (he is invincible during the beginning the initiation of the final smash). Upon the first landing, the Mecha Specter can bury opponents that were directly underneath the Specter and it can deliver huge knockback to fighters that were close to the Specter when it landed. In both instances, the landing deals lots of damage.

From there, the Specter can walk (using the control stick), jump (using the jump button), and attack (using the normal attack, special attack, and throw buttons) in various ways. It has very slow walking movement and can’t damage when doing so, so you are probably going to jump with it most often. The Specter can jump high and slightly far. Upon landing, it deals very high damage and knockback; it also buries opponents that are directly underneath it. The jumps, however, are slightly less strong compared to when it first lands on the stage. In addition, if you jump off the stage, you can KO yourself very easily, so you want to be careful with how you jump.

It’s main attacks involve its two arms. Pressing A (assuming you are using the Gamecube controller) causes the Specter to use its bigger arm. The bigger arm will immediately crush the floor beneath, and this delivers just as high knockback and damage as when Descole first lands on the stage. If you press the B button, the bigger arm will bury into the ground and pick up a piece of concrete. Then, it will throw the concrete for a decent distant. It is close to a OHKO on anyone that gets hit by it. Pressing the Z button lets it use the smaller arm on its back to grab opponents close to it and hurl them. The throw deals moderate damage but very high knockback and has a high chance of a KO at around 75%.

The entire Final Smash lasts 15 seconds. Once there are 5 seconds left, the Specter will start flashing just like what happens when time is running out when using the Landmaster. When time is up, Descole will hop out of the Specter, and the Specter fades into a blueprint model before disappearing (kind of like how the Landmaster final smash ends). Just like Fox, Falco, and Wolf’s Landmaster, you need to make sure you end the Final Smash when you are on land or if land is directly below you, because if you finish it when there isn’t any land beneath, Descole can KO himself.

Taunts (as Descole):

1) Puts his hand on his chin and evilly chuckles. His chuckling for this taunt would be used in Smash Tour when a Mii picks him up while traveling across a board.

2) Throws his arm to his right to make his cape float for a bit on one side and puts. As he does all of this, he says "Teh, child's play!”

3) Pulls out a small Azran artifact (the one that Leonard Bloom tries to steal in the third chapter of Azran Legacy), throws it into the air, catches it. As he does all of this, he says, "The Azran Puzzle is mine to solve."

Taunts (as Desmond)

1) Adjusts his glasses as they suddenly glint towards the end of the animation. As the glint animates, he gives a firm “Hmph!” This “hmph” would be used in Smash Tour when a Mii picks him up while traveling across a board.

2) Points to his opponent, then changes his point to a fist. During the duration of the taunt, he says, "You won't get away!”

3) Holds his hand to his forehead, closes his eyes, and nods it in a negative way. For the duration of the taunt, he says “I’m reminded of Targent just by seeing you."

As for Descole's victory music, it would be the last 10 seconds of his theme, but remixed to sound slightly faster. It makes sense to give Descole a different victory theme considering the puzzle correct melody wouldn’t be too fitting for him, at least in my opinion). Desmond would still share the same victory melody as Descole has as well.

Victory Animations (as Descole):

1) Laughs uncontrollably, starting with a small chuckle as he looks downward and walks slightly backward, then changes to a stance that makes him look like he has all the power power where he laughs very menacingly.

2) Swings his cape with his arm as he turns to his back and says, "This has been a pleasure. Many thanks." He looks behind when he finishes his statement, and once the announcer says his name, Descole performs a sky-rocketing jump to the point he is nowhere to be seen for the rest of the animation (similar to how Meta Knight uses his Dimensional Cape to vanish for his victory animation once the announcer says his name). This is supposed to pay homage to Descole’s departure in Miracle Mask (before he is confronted by Targent).

Descole's high jump to escape Layton in Miracle Mask. This would be used for one of his second victory animation, and his first jump being very high is a reference to this.

3) Pulls out the Azran Keystone from within his suit, holds it out in front of the camera and says "You aren't even worthy of the Azran Legacy!”

For his clapping animation, he doesn’t have one much like Mewtwo’s. Instead, he looks downward with gritted teeth, looking very angry over his loss and vibrating his head almost as if he is trying to contain his anger. When this entire animation is shown during the “No Contest” situation, you can see he is also holding fists being at both sides of his body, and much like his head, his arms vibrate in order to contain the anger.

Victory Animations ( as Desmond):

1) He does his puzzle correct animation from Azran Legacy (pictured below) as he says, "Logical thinking is my essential line of work.”

A still from Desmond's Puzzle Correct animation

2) He holds his mask from his Descole costume, and the camera first shows the mask up close. The panel then changes to a view of Desmond from a slightly low angle (only showing his upper body) as he says, "My beloved wife and daughter... know that this victory was for you (he closes his eyes as he says this).” The announcer would say Desmond’s name after Desmond says “daughter”, and the rest of the quote would be finished after the announcer’s line.

3) Desmond looks to the sky with a bright expression on his face. The camera then lowers. We see that about a few feet behind him, Raymond calls for Desmond, bows, and says, “You’ve done extraordinarly well, Master.” The camera switches angles, and Desmond turns to him with a smile and says, "Was there ever any doubt?”

As he has different victory animations than Descole, Desmond would have an actual clapping animation instead of trying to contain his anger. Desmond's clap is a bit slower than other character's, and he has a smile on his face as he claps.

Other Smash Bros ideas for Desmond:

This section is devoted to additional Smash Bros details for Descole, such as Boxing Ring titles, special victory quotes with Layton (which I personally think will likely happen considering Professor Layton will obviously be the first to make it in before him), Palutena's Guidance Conversations (though very unlikely to happen at this point, it's still fun to come up with one if Descole did get a conversation), Professor Layton codecs (another concept not very likely to happen, but still fun to toy around with nonetheless), Kirby hat ideas, reveal trailer ideas, etc. You can find some of my of ideas for this to get you started.

Descole: Destructive, Tragic Genius

This is meant to sum up Descole in Nutshell

Desmond: Mad Scientist or Secret Hero??

This is meant to show the differences in his personalities that are raised once we read Desmond's bio in Azran Legacy, as well as the gamer's reaction when he/she learns about Descole's true motives behind his villainous deeds.

Since Descole only real chances of joining can happen once Professor Layton gets into the roster, I thought it would make sense for Professor Layton and Descole to have some special victory quotes with each other. Professor Layton would have a different thing to say to Descole or Desmond depending on who he beats, while Descole and Desmond would both have different words to say to Layton in order to reflect the personality difference. Below are some of my ideas.

For Professor Layton’s special victory quote, his first victory animation from my Layton moveset idea (where Layton adjusts his hat and then gives a thumb up) would be used. Instead of saying “A true gentleman leaves no puzzle unsolved”, he says the following depending on who the opponent is
-To Descole: “There is no way I can let you do that, Descole!”
-To Desmond: “That was quite the excellent match, Professor Sycamore!”

For Descole’s/Desmond’s special victory quote, their second victory animation from my Descole moveset idea would be used. Instead of saying “This has been a pleasure. Many thanks” (as Descole) or “My beloved wife and daughter, know that this victory was for you” (as Desmond), he says the following to Professor Layton.
-As Descole: “You’re out of luck, Layton. Victory is mine!”
-As Desmond: “Please forgive me, Layton. *Announcer says Desmond’s name, then Desmond finishes his quote* I didn’t mean to inflict any harm.”

Pit: "This guy grinds my gears so much! He’s just so evil that I can’t even stand him, not to mention that mask and cape makes me suspicious. Seriously, who is he?"

Palutena: "That's Jean Descole, Professor Layton’s first main enemy.”

Pit: “Gee, that name sounds odd. I think I’ll call him 'Silly-Mask'".

Palutena: “Well, that aside, he is a fighter you need to watch out for. He has a sword equipped and is capable of hand-to-hand combat. He is also a brilliant scientist and can use various gadgets against you. One of them to look out for is the Robotic Pound. In this attack, he’ll use a large-sized robotic arm to crush anyone in front of him.”

Pit: “No wonder Silly-Mask is so irritating! To me, he is like some sort of monster who can’t be destroyed!”

Viridi: “You know, there’s a reason why Descole is like that."

Pit: "Hmmmm?"

Viridi: "He has a very tragic backstory.”

Pit: “Really? I’m curious.”

Viridi: “Are you sure you want to listen, Pit, because you’re probably going to cry like a little baby if I told you.”

Pit: “No I won’t, go ahead.”

Viridi: “Well, long story short, his birth parents were kidnapped by a criminal organization when he was child, and that same group later returned to recruit him when he was a adult. He declined, and so they killed his wife and daughter.”

Pit: “*sob* *sniff* That’s horrible!”

Palutena: “No time to grieve, Pit. You need to focus on the battle ahead, because Descole could easily overwhelm you if you become emotional. We can give you his full backstory later.”

Pit: “Gee, this guy sure looks classy.”

Viridi: “I see you are marveling at Professor Desmond Sycamore, another famous archaeologist and the authority of Azran civilization research.”

Pit: “Seems like professors like coming here for some reason."

Viridi: “Well, here’s another fact I should share with you: Mr. Desmond Sycamore over there is Jean Descole’s true identity. That’s how he looks like without that mystifying costume!”

Pit: “What? There's no way!”

Viridi: “Are you serious, Pit? Didn’t you notice the similarities? The shoes, the voice, the hair, and the fact the same butler drops him off on his plane? They all give it away!”

Palutena: “Not to mention that he fights exactly like Descole as well.”

Pit: “Now that you mention it, I do remember feeling like I’ve seen him before, but he doesn’t look so evil now.”

Palutena: “That’s because Desmond is supposed to be represent his hope and calm nature, while Descole represents his despair and vengeful desire.”

Viridi: "Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Mr. Desmond here is also Professor Layton’s biological brother.”

Pit: “Seriously!? Then how does that tie in with his backstory?”

Palutena: “We can talk about that later, because it's quite complicated. For now, stay focused, Pit.”

Viridi: “But let’s get one thing straight: that man has the most handsome figure, and those glasses make him look him so smart in the best way possible. I’d love to invite him over for a tea session!”

Pit: “Oh great, Lovebird Viridi again…”

Luke: “Good gravy, Professor, look who it is!”

Professor Layton: “I have the same reaction, Luke.”

Descole: “What, surprised to see me again, Layton?”

Professor Layton: “Descole, you should know that back when we departed the Azran Sanctuary, I thought you died!”

Descole: “Really? How amusing of you to think that. I only faked my death so that you would forget about me and move on with your life, but even you with your incredible intellect should have figured out it was only a ruse, Layton!”

Professor Layton: “Then what brings you back here?”

Descole: “Back when we finally laid the Azran to rest, I decided to embark on a new adventure, but I wasn’t sure where I would go. It wasn’t long before I heard about a tournament named ‘Super Smash Bros’ and heard about all of its splendor and glory that I figured it would be my new adventure I longed for.”

Professor Layton: “That’s rather interesting to think that.”

Descole: “But when I witnessed all the fighters that participated in it, I saw each and every one of them as dull and pathetic, so I’d figure I would go back to this persona to strike fear in their hearts and make them realize how one should really fight. I even managed to manipulate a famous racer into working with me in a plan to take out a fighter destined to join this tournament.”

Professor Layton: “I think you are taking it too far.”

Descole: “What, does it matter? In this tournament, it’s all about showing what you are truly capable of. And that being said, you should already know how I fight, Layton.”

Professor Layton: “Yes, Descole, I already know, but even then, I will solve the mystery behind this dark and vicious tournament, because I fear there is a much greater force that is controlling us like we are pawns in some sort of death match."

Luke: “Good gravy, Professor, look who it is!"

Professor Layton: “I have the same reaction, Luke.”

Desmond: “Professor Layton, what a pleasant surprise!”

Professor Layton: “Indeed, Professor Sycamore. What brings you here?”

Desmond: “I was getting a little tired of my whole ‘Descole’ act, so I’d figure I would act like every gallant hero fights in this tournament.”

Professor Layton: “I fear that you will probably return into that familiar persona at any second, especially when you did so when we reached the top of Obsidian Tower.”

Desmond: “Don’t worry, Layton, I won’t. For now, I just want to have another splendid battle with my own brother.”

Luke: “Brother!? Professor, what is he talking about?”

Professor Layton: “Oh my, seems like we forgot to talk about that, Luke. We can discuss that once this battle is over. It would require a long explanation on my part.”

Desmond: “And I hope you haven’t forgotten how I fight, Layton.”

Professor Layton: “Don’t worry, I haven’t. *Thinks to himself* Perhaps this battle will be one step closer to solving the grand mystery behind this dark tournament."
