Roy is not a deserving character, but I won't get into that.

I wasn't really talking about doubting a character because they are NOT a safe bet, as Sakurai has shown us that nothing is a safe bet anymore, rather people tend to look at unconfirmed/not Sal Leak newcomers rather than the confirmed/Sal leak characters. Chorus Men and WFT are suddenly safe bets.

It's annoying.
Why is Roy not "deserving"? I am at a loss on that one, sure there are more "deserving" characters; however, that does not automatically alter his relevance to Smash or the notion that he is highly requested (which equates to a desire from a significant portion of the fan-base).

While it's not something I particularly want, I would welcome Chorus Men with open arms. I mean, for me, 4 out of the 6 reveals for me have been completely bonkers. I never expected Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, or Greninja. I feel like there could be more to come. And I'll be fine with the decisions Sakurai makes, since I haven't been upset yet.

If Roy was one of those characters who was in works to return, then yes he does deserve to be back. Let's not forget to mention that him and Mewtwo are highly requested to return. If there's DLC, I'm all in for that

Neither of those mean that a character is "deserving".
Dr. Mario was in Smash at one point, so that automatically makes him a deserving character?

Roy hardly has any significance in Fire Emblem, even. He is largely irrelevant. He isn't a new lord anymore and he hasn't starred in multiple games like Marth and Ike. He continues to be popular but there are simply better choices.

Factor in that he was essentially thrown into the game for advertisement purposes (I'm normally okay with this, but not when the game isn't even out yet), so nobody even knew who he was. Yes, I know he was chosen because Sakurai found him unique, but that doesn't cover up the fact that he is one of the biggest cash-ins in Smash history.

Well, it might be because he's a clone. On the same level as Young Link, Pichu, and Dr. Mario.

Like you said, though, he's relevant to Smash in the sense that he debuted in it (before FE6), and he's the most popular of the Melee clones. But does that mean anything in the long run? He's not like Chrom.

Well, we witnessed the day Wii Fit Trainer got a roster slot before K.Rool, Ridley or Waluigi.
E3 is going to be one hell of a show.
Hm. You're right, but Wii Fit atleast moved units. That may or may not matter, but I don't even think Rythmn Heaven is that popular. Correct me if I'm wrong.
One of these is not like the others.
I still believe Waluigi couldve been upgraded to a character spot. It may've been a stretch, but I would've liked to see it.

It would definitely be a stretch. The guy's another spin off character, the only separating him from Daisy is mild popularity and prominence in exactly one game. He definitely isn't on the same level of Ridley and K. Rool.

Edit: Not to say your opinion is wrong, sorry. Just saying Waluigi is definitely a character I would shake my head at getting in, probably in the same way with you and Chorus Men.

From what I searched, Rhythm Heaven is more popular in Japan than anywhere else.

If we are using the dictionary definition of deserving; which as you know, I am incredibly fond of the dictionary.

Probably, more so than most candidates. I would say that it has less to do with his relevance to Smash, and more to do with the notion that there is a desire for him to return. Unlike Young Link, Pichu, or Dr. Mario.

I did not insinuate that Roy was a prominent Fire Emblem character, I did; however, assert that he was an important Smash character. Recency has nothing to do with whether or not a character is "deserving." So Roy not having recency is immaterial in this specific context.

He may be the biggest cash in, but that is not really pertinent to the discussion at hand. I feel as though I have a more thorough understanding of why you do not want him. But again, that is subjective. It does not radically alter why the character is deserving.

Well, it might be because he's a clone. On the same level as Young Link, Pichu, and Dr. Mario.

Precedent dictates that you can be "deserving" and a clone. Roy is actually one of these established precedents.

Although, this is really a subjective thing, what does make a character "deserving" for you?

Because Roy's a pretty deserving character in my eyes.

Btw, he wasn't solely added for advertising purposes. It was more like an unintentional side bonus.

Whether a character is "deserving" or not is open to interpretation.

However, it is my interpretation that Roy is not "deserving" (since my interpretation delves into the importance within home franchise) but he'd still be welcome.

Due to the fact the he was a clone of Marth in Melee, I would be fine seeing him as an alt. costume for Marth.

I just looked, and I was thinking about a completely different game lol. Sorry for the confusion. I was thinking of that one rhythm game with 3 guys in suits or something.

It's cool. I do agree Waluigi should be in more prominent roles (and I hope he is in the future) before he deserves a spot. I really just want him for fanboy canonical fights with Luigi lol.

I suppose my opinion is merely derived from the objectivity that Roy has already proven himself as a deserving character once before. The notion of "deserving" is not necessarily stagnant, obviously he is not nearly as prominent as he once was. It just feels as though if he was in Brawl, as he was originally intended to be, we would not be having this discussion.

I agree with your sentiment though; more often than not, I decide based on their importance within their own franchise.

Essentially this. I like Roy, I just think that people overrate his importance by a long shot.

And if he was in Brawl, deserving or not, most would see him as a shoo in.
But he wasn't.

If Falco was cut from Melee, for example, I wouldn't really want him back. He's a clone and Star Fox is relatively small, and could be represented fine with Fox and Wolf.

But he wasn't, and Roy was.

To be honest, I don't see Roy taking precedence over the more recent Fire Emblem characters from Awakening. I'm not necessarily opposed to his reappearance, but as I've already explained in one of my lengthier posts, I imagine Sakurai would be more inclined to bring in more unique characters over taking the time to declone characters that were already included in the game. That said, if Roy somehow does come back, I would personally love to see him with the design he has in the FE: Awakening DLC.

A design such as this could provide some opportunities for Roy to be decloned since here his character model is drastically different from the one he had in Melee, which essentially was a copy of the armor used for Marth's model.

Awakening Roy or bust for me. That design is too good to pass up.

Ouendan or EBA?
They are effectively the same game, but with different songs and character designs.
Ouendan got a sequel in Japan, whereas EBA did not.

That was honestly one of the few Awakening designs I really did like...

Needs more belts! You can never have enough belts! Roy's illustrator also did the character designs from The Last Story, among others.

But yeah, I'd personally would love this design or loosely based on it, or as an costume. Though, I'd expect Roy's design to be similar to Melee/mix of different things.

But Ike really needs his sword arm design as a costume. :awesome:

What's the deal with Anna besides being female and a classic, yet obscure, Fire Emblem character? I'm not hating on the character, I just want to see what you people see in her.

It is probably less about Anna, and more about having a character that is not Chrom. I am just making an inference, I would also be interested to see what people actually see in her.

Anna is seen as the mascot of Fire Emblem by the creators.

Anna is also like the Nurse Joy of Fire Emblem, having tons of recurring incarnations as a shopkeeper throughout every FE game since the original. Fire Emblem Awakening was the first game to have her as a unit.

She's not exactly obscure to those who've played the games, but I imagine those who've only gotten info on FE from Smash Bros will not recognize her.

I'd say Anna is recurring enough to be an AT at least. (it'd be the Awakening version, obviously)

It has a game that sold over a million in Japan alone. That is very rare.

From my understanding, she's in more games than any other character. And people would find something other than your typical lord/sword-wielding class more interesting.

For those who don't feel like reading Fire Emblem hogwash, skip this post.
About Fire Emblem, I think the main reason people cling to other characters is mainly because people want something other than Chrom. Especially on Smashboards. I see it here more than anything else.

Anna only just became playable and is an optional character, too. That doesn't exactly give much to her merit or all-star status (?). Chrom has the perfect merit and an all-star status, is the main character of the best selling FE game, the most recent and popular game, and actually has material to draw from. Mascot is Mascot, but Mascots aren't always the all-stars. That's like instead of having Rise Kujikawa as a playable character in Persona Ultimax, we got Jack Frost every single game and spinoff. I love Jack Frost, but it would get old. Fast.

And sometimes even the Mascots are slightly obscure compared to the actual characters. More people would recognize Chrom then Anna. He'd represent a game better than Anna, whose constant appearances as a recurring character are just that. She's never had a major role, and her unit status isn't even required. She shouldn't hold much merit over others. Or would we all like Nurse Joy as playable instead seeing how she appears in every Pokemon mainline game, unlike Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Pichu, Jigglypuff, Ivysaur, Squirtle, Mewtwo and Greninja, who are far more recognizable but haven't appeared in every Pokemon game?

Main Point: Appearances < Importance to general plot, story, series, etc, especially in Fire Emblem. Optional characters/recurring characters don't take importance or value as much as the playable characters.
Marth = The original Lord. Contributes to being iconic and attains status as the first.
Ike = Popular American Lord. At least until Chrom came around, Ike was a well liked Lord, especially in America.
Roy = Popular Lord who bridged the game generation gap as the first "modern" Lord (from GBA era which got three games). Unintentional recency/advertisement bonus.

I'll admit Anna has merit, but she's not getting in above a Lord or Tactician.

You're right. But I think marketability is a major reason why Chrom is getting included.
