Mario Video & Critique Thread

Out of a decent amount of requests, I've decided to make a new video thread which will house tournament videos as well as user videos. All types of videos are allowed, including For Glory matches, as long as it contains Mario. This will be formatted by character, and then by date. There will be a separate section for team battles and will be sorted solely by date. 3DS videos are allowed, but it will be noted if it's recorded off-screen.

This will be frequently updated as users post new videos. I understand that there's a lot of scattered Mario videos out there, but I'll only be adding what has been posted on this thread and what I personally find. If you feel a certain video deserves to be put on the list, just post it here and I'll add it.

Keep in mind this is also a critique thread, so don't hesitate to ask for advice as well!

Note: Format for all matches are Player(Mario) vs Player(Character) [MM/DD/YYYY] [Friendly/Tournament/For Glory]

Tournament Videos
This list will be for videos that have been specifically recorded during tournament play. This means no friendlies. If you want your tournament video here, just post it and I'll add it.

This will be categorized by player. This is so fans of a specific player can easily find their videos.

Hey guys, been wanting to do this for awhile, finally went to a tournament and they were recording video of the higher matches in the tournament. Would love to hear peoples thoughts on my mario gameplay. The good, the bad, the ugly, the awesomesauce. So please, critique away :D

These are the two uploaded videos so far, I should have two more videos once they're uploaded, and I'll post em once I see that they're uploaded!

vs Rog Game 1

Note: You can N-air Diddy's Up-B safely. This is the most effective way of gimping him, and that could've been done within the first 10 seconds of the match.

You played this game quite well. Right off the bat though, I would say your corner pressure is pretty weak. There were no attempts to scare Rog into getting smashed off the stage, or grabbing him. You almost always got yourself hit because you attempt to bulldoze through via Dash Attack. Combined with Edgeguarding, Mario's corner pressure is when he at his highest advantage. Do not let go of stage control by being too offensive.

On Diddy's second stock, you started getting hungry for the kill. Don't do this. Mario's U-Smash is fast and pretty damn good at killing. It'll come naturally, just continue keeping your advantage and not getting hit.

Beyond that, you fought well. You used your aerials well and your platform pressure was extremely solid (So many U-airs), I only suggest going for grabs more, as they're efficient at dealing damage and putting your opponent in very bad positions.

That Up-B kill was extremely sweet.

vs Rog Game 2

I'll get this out the way: You SD'd a lot in this game. If you didn't, you probably would have 2-stocked Rog.

Going to again note that you can N-air Diddy's Up-B safely. There were four times where you could have gimped Rog and he couldn't have done anything about it.

Don't use F-Smash until your opponent is ~80%. It's not worth using at low percents, even for damage. The follow-ups you get from your aerials or grabs are much more efficient than F-Smash's damage. Even worse, F-Smash constantly leaves you open for attack. It's just not safe to use as freely as you were doing so that match.

I'm very surprised D-Smash killed Diddy. Rog's DI was pretty bad.

vs JKBUK Game 1

Remember when G&W had a 70:30 Advantage? Those were the days...

Good use of F-Smash in this game, got an extremely early kill on him when gave a significant advantage, but that was ripped away when he gimped you at 2:37. You can use N-air to break through the projectiles, or you can cape them back, but it's almost always a bad choice to hang back like the way you did. You basically wasted your second jump to stall in place, and made yourself completely free to G&W. Don't do this. Taking damage is better than losing a stock.

Note: G&W's U-Smash makes it's head invincible. Do not challenge this. I wouldn't even attack G&W while Mario is above him, it's just not worth that risk. Instead, wait for G&W to use it, and then punish. F-Smash is probably too slow for this, so I would suggest just using U-Smash.

My last suggestion is to use fireballs more liberally. Yes, G&W can bucket them, but it has to see them coming. If it buckets one, the recovery takes so long you can literally get a free F-Smash off of it.

Otherwise, you played the game pretty well. You just have to learn about G&W's perks.

vs JKBUK Game 2

@6:58 B-Throw would've killed G&W.

Otherwise, Game 1 analysis applies here.

vs JKBUK Game 3

@10:21 :eek:
That's something to look into.

Game 1 analysis also applies here.

vs JKBUK Game 4

Mario's N-air beats Shiek's U-air. You can't U-tilt lock Shiek at 0%. She needs at least 11% damage.

Otherwise, there's not much to say about this match. It's obvious JKBUK didn't have much experience with Shiek considering how hard you bodied her. Solid work here. My only suggestion is to use aerial fireballs to approach while avoiding needles. Caping them isn't very effective.

Overall? Your Mario is solid. I would prioritize working on your corner pressure and DI, and then working from there. I look forward to seeing your Mario more in the future.

I got a For Glory match against a D3 couple days ago that I uploaded:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39572HMWlZs

EDIT: My bad didn't see the format you wanted

Teb (Mario) vs Player (D3) 12/7/14 For Glory
For Glory Johns aside...

There's not much to say about the D3 player, so I'll keep this on your general style. Fireballing isn't a good camping tool, but it's good to use to force your opponent to react to something, which you did pretty well. However, good players will often just shield this, and continue on.

The best use for Fireballs is to set up traps. When your opponent is in the air, they can't shield. They either have to take the hit, air dodge, or cancel it with an aerial. This allows you to set up an offensive maneuver that will give you the advantage. When the opponent is grounded, you mainly want to use fireballs to mess up their movement. If they have to shield, they can't move. This allows you to maintain stage control.

I enjoy your use of D-air, particularly @2:38. Keep that up.

Thanks for all the details in your analysis mystic! Can't say i know all of the matchups terribly well, so mentioning things like being able to nair diddys recovery is really good to know. I'll try to work on my corner pressure, any specific tips on that? also, for corner pressure, do you just mean when they're near the sides of the stage or when they're on the ledge specifically?

I'll work on less f-smash and more grabbing early on for damage, makes sense. Do you know specifically how DI works in this game? I had it down pat perfectly when it was vectoring before the 3ds 1.0.4 patch, but i haven't been entirely sure how its worked since the change. I've just been holding toward the stage and down still, except for when im in multihits i hold to get out of the combos.

as for JKBUKs matches, also pretty unfamiliar with the matchup so was learning while i go kinda thing. definitely shoulda taken the bacon hit rather than the gimp like you said, i hadn't realized till this fight that G&Ws upsmash makes him invulnerable, so i tried testing it once more and got smacked for it just as hard lol. The bucket lagging g&w enough to get a free smash off is good to know, wasn't aware it had the delay.

Throw def would have killed in game 2 there, and for 3 i know marios up b hits have really high knockback on light chars except for the last one, prob woulda killed him on a platform XD As for the sheik matchup, it suprised me he went to it. He was complaning G&W was "such" a bad character, i was like, why don't you swap to a better char you know if he's so bad? so he swapped to sheik. I have a friend who although they can't fight me very well plays sheik, so i actually know shieks moveset pretty well which helped, and as you said he didn't seem to be a shiek player.

Having said all that, thanks again for the analysis! the other 2 videos are up now, so I'll link em below. My cousin who I get most of my high level practice with is the pika match, we usually tend to have a "flow" of sorts where one of us one ups the other repeatedly till it flips, mario v pika/yoshi are too matchups i know really well 0.o Definitely still post anything you guys see, as its always possible im missing some awesome thing i just need to be informed of! :D

I'll answer this with Game 1 of yourself vs Sethsational.

I'll answer the DI question first since I believe that's more important. Lets look @1:08.

Captain Falcon's Raptor Boost sends Mario straight upward.

With Falcon's position in the picture, the correct way to DI this is: :GCDR: (Right + Down)

If an attack sends you straight upward, you always DI away from the character (using DI toward them won't do anything), and holding downward would force the arc to go downward since you have horizontal trajectory. I use this as an example because your first stock was lost to a Raptor Boost that could've been survived with DI.

Horizontally works similarly, but also more variant because you can use DI to avoid getting combo'd (by holding :GCUL::GCUR:). For example, holding away when Diddy D-throws you forces Diddy to follow-up with F-air, because U-air will miss.

Now for the corner pressure question: The answer is both when they're on the ledge and at the corner of the stage, but it's more significant when your opponent is specifically on the ledge because their options are limited.

Imagine first starting a match. Mario and Captain Falcon are at neutral spots. Both are able to move freely and make their actions without worry. Both have equal amounts of the stage to move around.

Now look @2:16

Captain Falcon is at the ledge, and Mario has full control of the stage. Falcon cannot move around freely, and keeping grip of the ledge gives him limited options. He can do a regrab (which allows Mario to do a Dash Attack stage spike), stand up, jump up, U-air onto the stage, Side-B onto the stage, or roll.

Significant Note: Each option available to Captain Falcon is a risk. If he whiffs U-air, Mario can punish. If he Side-B's, Mario can Cape/FLUDD, if he gets up, Mario can grab, if he jumps, Mario can do an aerial, etc..

Now this risk was minimalized because you more or less just run up to the ledge Leeroy Jenkins style. This means Captain Falcon was able to just get up on the stage and regain stage control, along with his options.

Ally does a good job showcasing Mario's corner pressure (ignore the commentator that doesn't understand this). It's all about keeping stage control.

This is an excellent example of corner pressure. (2:13 to 2:49).

Hope that helps explain some things. I'll come back and analyze the rest of your games once I finish watching them.

-------------

Jesus.

That was you the entire set.

Fortunately you fixed the issue with this on the final match, which you played splendidly.

There's a rule that the Competitive Forum made up, and it makes a lot of sense, so I'd like for you to apply this.

Grab > Shield > Attack > Grab.

It's a Trinity rule that I've been following for Smash 4. Mario, being the balanced character he is, is perfect for this. Pikachu for the majority of the match shielded a lot of your attacks, then grabbed right after to gain stage control. What's the natural retaliation to this? Grabs. You did this in your final match and suddenly you bodied Pikachu. Seriously, the end of Pikachu's first stock made me stand up and do a fist pump in satisfaction with how you handled that.

I unfortunately don't know too much about Pikachu, and you already know that you can punish Pika's F-Smash and D-Smash with Mario's F-Smash, so there's not much else I can say. I personally learned more from that match than I expected.

Great job at your tournament. You've made these Mario mains proud. Keep up the good work, and hope to see more of your Mario in the future.

For a punish for Pika's blocked Dsmash at zero, see if Fair -> Jab combo is quick enough to connect. It it is, that's 23% I think.

At high %, I think you can afford to sit in shield a bit more against Pikachu, to an extent. Don't just always stay in shield because you'll get grabbed, but I think that's a better alternative to Pikachu reading your roll or spotdodge and smashing you instead.

If Pikachu isn't in immediate range to punish you after you whiff something, just look at him and wait for him to do something. If he runs at you, jab/grab, or just run away and see if he commits to something.

Forgot to mention that your Mario is impressive. Keep up the good work.

I found this tournament match (Grand finals) of Ally's mario playing against Will. This video was uploaded today.

If Ally had used fludd at 12:06 he would not only cancel Will's ledge attack, but won the set right there.

Any veteran mario main would had taken advantage of that situation. Overall, Ally's mario is good.

I just started using mario 2 weeks ago but I just can't get enough of his fireball set ups and best of all, his fair.

I still don't use fludd or am very good with the cape though. Also I usually don't like to post my foe's name if it's for glory so bare with me here.

Looking for some feedback on these videos. Things I've learned so far other than the timing for meteor smashes is mario's dsmash. It's pretty good to use after shielding and to punish rolls as it's pretty quick and strong. It also sends them flying horizontally, perfect to do a delicious meteor smash.

First off, welcome to the Mario boards and I hope you'll stick around.

I decided to watch all the videos before critiquing and I pretty much saw a common theme. I decided to check one of your Ganondorf videos and immediately saw you were more intuitive (and therefore, better) with him. The biggest reasoning behind this is because with Ganondorf, you attempt to use the best of his moves for the right situation. You Down-B to punish camping, you U-air to combat aerial opponents about you, you Side-B to punish shielding, etc, etc.

With Mario, the most common theme I see here is you love F-air. So much that you approach with it, and that leaves you completely open. In Smash, a character tends to not have a best move for every situation. Each ability within a moveset has applications that is more suitable than another. So it's best to build a gameplan around Mario's moveset in it's entirety.

So let's say... your gameplan is to use F-air to spike people as much as possible. What's the best way to do this? Well first, you have to get them off the stage. Frankly, F-air isn't the best way to get them off the stage. However, the rest of Mario's toolkit is. U-air, U-tilt, B-air, Jab, Grab... those are all more suitable choices.

Once your target is off-stage? F-air becomes more viable. Will you continue to make that your goal, or will you opt to change options and use Cape, FLUDD, B-air, or N-air?

My advice is to practice utilizing all of Mario's options and get a feel for what is best in a given situation.

Thanks for the reception, reply and for watching my ganondorf vids too, I really have fun playing as him.

Anyways, I've been trying to do nair more often as well as dodging and then throwing people away for those juicy fairs. I've started to practice with flood and the cape in training mode, but I'm still rubbish at the timing of the cape and fludd usually sends them flying upwards, which makes them cpu have an easier time recovering. I got the game for wii u a week ago and fair has saved me alot from losing to pretty skilled players as well as spammers like link and greninja, both of which are more present than in the 3ds version.

I'm still gonna go for fairs for characters with predictable recoveries, but I'll practice fludd and cape for characters with big damaging ranges on their recovery, like sword weilding characters.

^With FLUDD, you want to shoot people mid recovery moves, when they're retreating to a ledge, or whenever they miss a ledge sweetspot.

If someone is camping you, you can also use FLUDD to push them off of the stage, giving you a free approach. They either jump to avoid going to the ledge, or they get stuck on the ledge.

So I was watching Ally vs. M2K from the come up and noticed that Ally seems to use FLUDD at seemingly random times. Does anyone have an idea of what he's going for?

Another online match, actually from the NDJ Ladder. One mistake I made is how I dealt with the little koopa mecha bombs because caping is really ineffective and I didn't realize till after the set. FLUDD actually shoots them away airborne while the bomb tanks fireballs if I remember correctly. Anyways here it is,

Teb (Mario) vs TopShaf (Bowser Jr.)

I just finish watching your match moments ago. Impressive as always, Teb. Nice fludd kill set ups as well.

You could of got your first kill at 1:28 w/jab canceling: Jab > D-smash. When I notice that, my jaw drop and I said "Aww man, bro had a easy jab cancel there" lol

Overall I enjoy watching your game.

@ Vinylic. Vinylic.

Watching your matches against FOW, your general theme is a lack of stage presence. Megaman was in control each match from beginning to end, and is mainly because you constantly got plastered by projectiles while recklessly running in. By the time you get to him, your damage is too high and he can effectively knock you away and reset the situation.

There were also moments, particularly in the first match, where you would sit in your shield for basically no reason when you gained momentum. You don't need to do this. WiFi Johns aside, you can keep Megaman on the ropes through fireballs and D-air, and grabs.

Speaking of Fireballs, there were way too little of them. This is the main reason why FOW had so much control. Fireballs are weak in damage, but they're very versatile and highly necessary for Mario to gain and maintain control. Mario's fireballs could have saved you quite a number of times from Megaman's U-air, and they could have also challenged his spacing when he was firing pellets and razors.

Overall your issue with those matches were you played FOW's game and not yours. All those games were his to lose. You have to gain control of the game, and the best way to do that against Megaman is challenging his spacing through fireballs and keeping as much stage control as possible. Megaman's weakness is below him, so U-throw, D-throw, and U-tilt are solid options against him. If he drifts to the side, chase him. If he drifts off the stage, edgeguard through B-air and fireballs. Just be careful not to get bladed.

I can tell in this game you never really had a chance to show your real style, which is why I can't critique your style, but rather your fundamentals. Once that is handled, we can delve deeper into your personal style.

I'll watch the rest of your matches and others in a bit.

----

Watching the rest of your matches, the issues are more or less the same. Generally, you have to start using fireballs more. The only character you should be using them sparingly is against G&W, and even then you should still be using fireballs to trap it into using the bucket and giving you a free F-Smash.

You were also unfamiliar with the match-ups against Luigi and Shiek. While you got wrecked pretty badly by Luigi (you need to respect his aerials more. They're straight-up better than ours), you did pretty well against Will's Shiek, which speaks volumes because he has KirinBlaze to practice against. Just keep in mind N-air stops a lot of Shiek's aerials.

My advice for now is to just focus on using fireballs. Use them when recovering, use them at neutral, and use them when your opponent is recovering. Integrate them in your playstyle and I assure you that your control of the game will be a lot more consistent.

@ Watulio Watulio

Your Mario has improved. You're utilizing his toolkit more and leaving yourself less open, which is a good thing. At this point you'll have to work on your pacing. On the match you posted, you use D-Smash a lot. At first it seems right. D-Smash gets your opponent away from you. However as Mario, you want to stay close to your opponent and rack up as much damage as possible. Grabs, U-tilt, and Jabs are a good way to damage your opponent while keeping them near you.

Could someone record my replays for me? I'll eventually be getting some made for sure, there are a lot of match-ups there that will be shown.

Not through your friends list. I haven't yet tried seeing what I can do with an SD card though.
My SD Card Reader died on me, so I can't connect my sd card to my pc, but I can to my laptop. There probably is something you'll find on an SD Card

I've been losing faith in my Mario as of late, and it's weird because I think he's better than he was in brawl and I stuck with him then.

This isn't me, but Byron has a good Mario so I'll link it anyway.

He didn't know the Pac-Man MU, but who does? I told him he can cape falling hydrants right after the set, but Pac-Man can bait that and still dodge.

You can't put replays on SD cards either, unless the option isn't in the replays menu.

@ BSP BSP your Mario is still impressive and one of the best I've seen. It's cause of you that I use the fludd a lot more now. Don't give up on him! :)

While you're not a titan like Ally, your Mario is still one of high caliber. Your matches against Luigi and Kirby show you have a strong understanding of the character.

My only real suggestion is to not spam smash attacks so much. While U-Smash has little end lag, it still leaves you open to be punished. Even when they're at kill percents, it's okay to just hang back and space out your opponent until you find a golden opportunity.

Byron's Mario is really good too. I particularly enjoy his hard F-Smash reads at the ledge. It's such a threatening position.

Ok. Was your set vs. Mr CC recorded?

I won't. I practiced him some yesterday and began to realize I wasn't abusing his speed to its fullest extent, nor am I edge guarding at top capacity. Once I fix those, I'll be good to go again.

I wish we had some throw -> KO move like Luigi though.

I got a ladder match against a duck hunt (I win). I beat his siddy and I had a lot of good punishes and pivot grabs, but I didn't save replay, cause my wiimote got all weird and went straight to the css :/
