a mediocre OP imo

too much spent on the lore of socal regionals and almost nothing on specifics that will help convince would-be attendees that it's worth showing up

here are questions i have about any tournament:

1. who is organizing it?
2. how much is it?
3. what's the schedule? doubles, singles, pools?
4. how many TVs do you have?
5. what, if any, top players are expected to attend?

personally i am always extremely skeptical of any tournament featuring two or more games. help convince me that melee will have enough TVs, space, and attendants to ensure a high-quality tournament experience.

It's probably not going to be as enjoyable of an experience if you don't really enjoy the FGC games. I follow the scene moderately for there to be enough interest in going beyond the realm of Smash.

In terms of quality smash time, I'd say you'd get less than the typical tourney. However, if this is in fact an Evo qualifer (and Melee is part of the line up), then there should be quite a few top players (AZ, Norcal, Washington, and perhaps a handful of the big five?) to come around.

^ that would be the key

makes me wonder if arian talks to the top players across the country before making his regional posts. if he doesn't he definitely should.

the first post is key. huge difference in prospective hype if you can say "SOCAL REGIONALS feat. Mango" vs "SoCal Regionals."

oh yeah, cap numbers for every event:
Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition ver. 2012 – 256
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 -256
Super Smash Bros. Melee – 256

King of Fighters XIII – 128
Street Fighter x Tekken ver. 2013 – 64
Soulcalibur V – 64
Soulcalibur II HD Online – 64
Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate – 64
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 – 64
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown – 64
Divekick – 64
Skullgirls – 64
BlazBlue: Chronophantasma – 64
Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Full Boost – 32 Teams
Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus R – 64
Persona 4 Arena – 64
Mortal Kombat – 64
Injustice: Gods Among Us – 64
Killer Instinct – 64
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo – 64

better show up in full force, because Melee's been given the same cap as the two traditional main events
then again this is SoCal, so meh shouldn't be that hard

1. Level-Up. Team OXY is running the melee side of things.
2. $35 venue, $10 singles if you register online before Feb 16th at www.socalregionals.com
3. You can view the full schedule, for all games, at socalregionals.com

Friday:
10AM – 1PM Pools 1-4
1PM – 4PM Pools 5-8
4PM – 7PM Pools 9-12

Saturday:

10AM – 1PM Pools 13-16
1PM – 3PM Top 32

Sunday:

top 8 finals (time TBD)

We'll be taking on-site registration for doubles after singles ends on Saturday.

4. TBD. Our space allocation isn't completely finalized, but we'll only be using 8 for tournament; whatever else we have space for will go toward friendlies.
5. From what I can tell, all of West Coast's finest are planning to come. I can't gauge the OOR interest quite yet.

Its a different type of event. Socal Regionals is about bringing gaming communities together for a massive Fighting Game tournament. There are tradeoffs to this; we won't have round robin, and maybe fewer friendly setups than we're used to, but thats what Super Smash Sundays, Kings of Cali, etc type of events are for. This is its own spectacle, and a great opportunity for the Melee community to show our game off to a wider audience. The spectator experience will be top-notch, and with so many competitors in-house, we'll have top level play, for every game, going on in every corner of the room. I'm sure many of our attendees will stick to the Melee corner, but for those who don't, they'll see the sights and sounds that the venue and production have to offer.

We're getting the same treatment as SF IV and Marvel; we'll have top 8 stream time on the main stage, and constantly be shuffled onto the major streams on Friday and Saturday.

Sorry for the lackluster OP; its pretty much a c&p from the shoryuken thread. With the way smashboards has been up and down, its not been the most reliable service for promoting our events. However, I'll update the thread with more as I get the chance. :)

thank you. that seems fair.

i have no problem trading off increased cost for increased professionalism/organization, increased hype, decreased friendlies, and increased talent

why isn't this getting more attention?
For the record, Kings of Cali 3 only had 24 responses to its Smashboards thread, and ended with 200+ entrants. West Coast doesn't use smashboards as much as it used to, unfortunately.

Our registration is going smoothly. The facebook event has ~600 confirmed, including a lot of smash names. Tournaments still a ways out, so its difficult to say, but the Melee community has a habit of stepping it up.

do you have pre-reg numbers for Melee though?
(we better have passed KoF by now, we were behind at one point)

edit: we're behind SFxT now, that means the numbers are bad because that game has a 64 player cap

49 is the latest number, I think venue fee goes up tonight although there is door reg. Kinda sad though, I wanted another KoC type of tournament to watch but I'm sure more people will sign up later.

that's literally <40% of Blazblue's numbers, and they've hit their 2nd cap
