Is this a useful technique?

Let me start by saying that I am bad at this game, so keep that in mind when reading this.

I was messing around as Ike in training mode, trying to figure out the best way to dash > turn around > side-B, when I accidentally used neutral-B instead. Ike dashed a short distance in one direction, turned around and started Eruption, then glided forward and finished the move. It looks exactly like when you dash neutral-B, but with the dash > turn thrown in. I tried to replicate this, but succeeded only rarely. I did confirm that this is not simply perfect pivot > neutral-B, as the sliding distance is significantly larger.

Is this a known technique? If so, what are some of its uses and limitations? And...does anyone know the exact button timings needed?

It's known. It's called a B-reverse. If you pull back shortly after using a special, certain specials reverse your momentum. It's not that useful for Ike's eruption, because while it's not too difficult to hit, it's pretty weak uncharged with a guaranteed punish if the opponent can react in time.
