yo

so I'm SmashBro and I sort of moderately exist in other places
and I also have a name that's probably going to be easily forgotten considering this is Smashboards
but oh well

... Alright, ever since the Melee documentary I had the vague idea of joining Smashboards. I guess what's been holding me back was being intimidated a bit? The community here is absolutely massive, and every other forum or guild I've been a part of has been relatively small. I guess I was a little nervous of being swept away under the wash, becoming just another blank face in the sea of users. Slowly but surely, my idea of becoming a part of the community here grew more into a plan. Watching events like the Smash 4 Invitational, the Smash Bros. tournament at San Diego Comic Con, and Nintendo's own Treehouse streams, as well as more "independent" endeavors like YouTube channels and Twitch streams of competitive Smashers... it helped me get a little bit of confidence in finally jumping into the water. From what I can gather a lot of you seem to be very friendly and welcoming of new players, and I guess I finally decided I was ready to "take the risk" per se.

I'm just going to say up front that I'm also mainly here due to Smash 4. Before, Smash Bros. was sort of a casual passion, a hobby. Sure, I really enjoyed Smash Bros., but on the same token I also really enjoyed Mario Kart and Pokemon. And F-ZERO. And Custom Robo, for the four of you out there who played the one for GameCube. I still enjoyed playing the games, I just wasn't crazy about them. To be honest, neither game really grabbed my attention on a competitive level. Melee is incredibly technical, but I feel it's a little intimidating for a newcomer. Core mechanics like L-cancelling, wavedashing, and teching aren't explained or hinted at in the game, you just kind of have to "get" it. It's not nearly as bad as, say, Street Fighter... but it's still sort of there. At the same time, Brawl went a little too far into the casual side of things. It's still fun to load up with friends and play a few rounds, but after about 20 minutes you really start to feel the clunkiness of some fighters' moves and the dominance of others. Things like pratfalling and -- we can't forget this one -- the Pity Smash... those don't help much either. If the Smash Ball is enabled, sure, give the guy who's bad at Smash Brothers a free Mario Finale or Triforce Slash or what-not, but if I have items turned off that shouldn't be happening.

Smash 4 sort of captured the perfect "middle ground" for me personally. There's still teching from a tumble and things like the pivot cancel, but all the game's inputs are incredibly easy to learn and to use effectively. Tilts feel smoother, smash attacks really click when you charge them, the hitstun revamp leads to feel-good combo hits... I don't know, something about Smash 4 really lights a spark for me. Like, it's not just Smash 4, it's more than just simply being a fourth Smash Bros. game. Don't get me wrong, it's still Smash Bros., but it's a new spin on the Smash Bros. experience. Maybe this is just the hype talking. Maybe I'm just bad for being scared by Melee and not being thrilled with Brawl. Really, I have no idea. I'm just gonna end with saying "Smash 4 feels incredible and I'm anxiously awaiting the stateside release" and leave it at that.

Really, I'm just looking to have a good time and maybe meet some new friends, possibly get into the competitive scene. Smash 4 sort of made me suddenly gain a huge interest in playing competitively; multiply my excitement tenfold if we get a tournament ladder that supports custom special moves. My main back in the days of Melee used to be Dr. Mario, but after I went back about two weeks ago and played the game over again, I'm really digging Sheik (those crispy aerials) and Ganondorf (after maining Brawl Ganondorf, the Melee version was satisfyingly faster in comparison).

As for Smash 4, my "main" (if I can even get away with saying that before release date) is looking to be Bowser. Even back during the first ever E3 video one and a half years ago, the Bowser buffs made me scream in delight. Friends of mine can tell you all about how I was gushing over "those sexy Koopa thighs"... and after playing the Smash-Fest event at Best Buy, Bowser feels phenomenal. Regrettably I can't recall his name, but I was eventually matched with one person from a group claiming to be Smashboards regulars. We tried fighting it out, but after we recognized one another's skill we spent the rest of the time match farming KOs off the other two players. The match came to a close, or so we thought -- here comes SUDDEN DEATH. After a few dodges and shield blocks, I manage to grab his Pit with a Koopa Claw and slam down for the win. Bowser's increased speed, modified and revamped moveset, the addition of super armor at low percentages... aaaaahhhh! I lost my mind over Bowser all over again, just like I had done a year earlier. I can hardly wait to get cracking with the Koopa King in Multi-Man Smash and the new Classic Mode.

Alright, that's enough ranting from me. I'll probably forget to post again immediately, but I definitely anticipate stopping by here from time to time just to check up on things until Smash 4 officially drops. Thanks for reading, and to perfectly sum up why I finally signed up for an account here... I guess I wanted to have as much fun as these guys:

(if I knew how to spoiler this, trust me -- I would)

Very nice intro! I really enjoyed reading through all of this :) We are indeed a massive community here at Smashboards (and still growing), but I love it. Over time, when you really start getting into the discussions with the community here, I'm sure you'll love it even more.

Like you, I'll also be using Bowser a good deal. My main will be Shulk (love Xenoblade Chronicles) while my secondaries will be my two favorite Nintendo villains, Ganondorf and Bowser. Hope to see you around the Bowser sub-forum!

Anyway, welcome to SWF! Enjoy your stay.
