Holding L and R and selecting Wario on the result screen Crashes

I was trying to activate Wario-Man and held down L and R and selected Wario. The screen froze completley but the music continued, although it changed to a fragmented version of the Brawl main theme, so it wasn't a complete crash but it was still unresponsive.

I'm on homebrew on an actual wii

Was this on the Character Select Screen or the Result Screen (after a match)? Did it freeze right as you pressed start?
