The problem occurred after I added in some custom stages I found in this thread: http://smashboards.com/threads/complete-stage-list.336248/

The ONLY changes I have made are as follows:

Replaced these original stages from PM: http://imgur.com/aZn6oSB
with textures/remodels in the thread above.

Replaced these images in system/common5.pac and menu2/mu_menumain.pac: http://imgur.com/DZa0MhR
with the appropriate images in the thread above following the exact instructions in the Spoiler from this post:

I absolutely know I replaced the correct files.

In the rules menu, I can freely view and toggle the stages in the random stage select screen.

I can play as every character except Pokemon Trainer in Subspace Emissary.

Yet for some reason, my Wii freezes with that awful beeping sound whenever I try to enter the character select screen in Brawl, Special Brawl, Classic, All Star, Event, Stadium, Training.

Where should I start?

It could be your common5 might have gotten corrupted or didn't save properly. Try loading vP:M and see if it still freezes.

Clearly that is going to work.

I'm currently considering replacing my common5.pac and mu_menumain.pac and adding the images back in, assuming this is the problem.

Also, though not directly relating to P:M, I also installed the snes9x emulator and adjusted my bootmii config so that it would load homebrew immediately when I turned my Wii on. I doubt this has any effect on Project M, however it is worth noting that it is a change on my SD card, if that somehow affects P:M.

Yesterday, I used my friend's hackless loader to play P:M and tried replacing his SD card with mine after the game loaded. The game worked perfectly. The only difference was that the images on the SSS and random stage select were not the images I had put into my common5.pac and mu_menumain.pac. The stages and textures loaded just fine, along with the music on my SD card.

I'm going to test if My Music works tonight, since stage select icons are there too.

I also tested with his disc, with my SD card - freeze. His Wii with my SD card - freeze. I'm FAIRLY certain I have isolated the problem, but I would still appreciate instructions on the ideal directions to fix and prevent this freeze.

you may have reached the filesize limit on a file within common5.pac. try decreasing the quality of the images you used to replace the stage previews.

Thankfully, you have done a ton of testing which saves a bunch of time in trial and error troubleshooting.

Try downloading the Project M zip file and replacing the common5.pac on your SD card with the one in the .zip you downloaded. If it works, Strongbad's suggestion about reducing image quality on stage previews should allow you to have your edits. You don't need to butcher the quality all the way down, but the Wii only runs at around 320p and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you lowered it a little bit.

If that doesn't work, attempt vP:M and further isolate the problem by cycling through your edited files.

What is the file size limit on common5.pac? It must be really low since I didn't add anything, only replace.
Is there a file size limit on mu_menumain.pac? If so, what is the file size limit?
Is there anything useless in common5.pac or mu_menumain.pac that I could delete to reduce its file size?
Thanks in advance!

Edit: According to kc-mm, the limit is around 12kb. I have about 5, which is is barely any bigger than the original: http://i.imgur.com/UqakcFM.png
