DGames Secret Santa!

What is DGames Secret Santa?

For those unaware what a Secret Santa game is, it is where a group of people agree to send one another gifts but the recipients of said gifts are chosen anonymously at random. You don't know who sent you a present until you open it! Some Secret Santas don't even show who sent the gift at the end, but for this one we will be doing so.

The gifts don't have to be extravagant, unique, or expensive but it is recommended they be thoughtful.

How do I sign up?

Send me a PM with your full name, address, and an e-mail address you can be contacted at outside of Smashboards. This will be the address that they send the gift to, so if you are going home for the holidays from college you should probably not put your dorm address and get a failed delivery.

Please also let me know if you would be willing to:

A) Ship outside the US / Europe / wherever you live (this can be more expensive); if you do not agree to this you will also not RECEIVE gifts from outside your country

B) Send additional gifts if someone gets the shaft

I will be assuming the answer is no if you do not respond.

Then in the same PM you put your likes / dislikes / pertinent information as seen below:

Sign up Format said:
Likes: Bazookas, Mafia, RPGs, flights to South Korea and Japan for two, fully functioning death stars

Dislikes: Rap music, skunk scent, tomatoes

Pertinent Information: I own a Wii and an Xbox 360, I'm allergic to kryptonite, and have a small kangaroo as a pet
That's it! You replace my silly Likes / Dislikes with your own. Please don't add any pictures and try to keep it simple.

While it's nice to know something specific when buying something for someone and it's always nice to just tell someone "I want this video game" and then get it that won't be the method we will be using for this Secret Santa. This can put some constraints on those without money during the holiday season (if I said "I want a new nylon string classical guitar", you're either going against my list completely or will go broke) and can make people feel like they've failed if they can't find or afford those specific items. List plenty of things so you can be surprised and be vague if you can!

Keeping it vague means that everyone gets to buy gifts of their own choosing, which means we should be sending and receiving more unique and interesting gifts than we may be used to from our family or friends.

Please take special note of the pertinent information section. Knowing what game systems someone owns or what their shirt size would be is nice and all, but knowing things like allergies is important.

What are the rules?

1) No Hydras. You sign up as a single entity and will be sending to a single entity; only one signup per-household unless you can prove to me you are two separate people in the same house.

2) All sign-up PMs must be sent completed; if the sign-up PM is missing information you will not be signed up until I get it all. Don't wait until the last day to sign up!

3) All gifts sent should be somewhere above ~$10 in value. If you're making something homemade that doesn't have a price tag attached to it that is fine, just please don't send a macaroni picture to someone who bought their giftee a T-shirt or Gamecube controller or something. If you think $10 is too expensive do not sign up for the gift exchange and I would suggest finding employment.

4) You must take a picture of the received gift to show off in the thread afterwards; it's part of the fun! You don't have to be in the picture, but it is encouraged. I'm sure someone you know has a camera.

5) Gifts must be SHIPPED by December 14th (this is less than 3 weeks from the signup cutoff). This is to ensure delivery by Christmas, or at least close to it.

6) You MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST TWO FULL GAMES and not been killed for inactivity. Please do not sign up if you are currently in your first game. If you think you are borderline, ask me and I'll confirm with you.

7) In the case of an odd number of signups, I will enter myself into the pool. This will ensure that everyone who gets to sign up will participate.

Secret Santas only work when people get into it and really try to send good gifts. It's about the giving, not receiving, and if I find out that someone signed up and just mailed out a snickers bar and a stick figure drawing as their gift hoping they'd just receive something awesome, I will personally ban you from every one of my games from all eternity and will encourage other mods to do the same.

DGames is a community, don't take advantage of that.

Signed up.

We should map plot everyone so we can get a Dgames demographic visual.

I can set one of those up.

By the by, if you want to sign up and post in here, go for it! You don't have to announce in the thread you are though, in case you want to remain anonymous until the reveal.

I'm definitely in. This is a good idea.

Talk to me about international shipping rate increases. I'm, in all likelihood, game. I just don't want to be paying an extra $60 to ship it to Japan, no matter how much I love Marshy.

You should also warn that if you fear giving out your address to someone in the form of a return address, then you shouldn't be sending gifts.

And for God's sake, write a letter. Even something small and funny with an anime picture that Xonar printed out, cut off, and pasted on would be nice. You've got a chance to do something fairly memorable, so do it.

Shipping can be alleviated quite a bit by ordering online. Sure, you don't have that extra flair of being able to write your own letter or anything... but it can save you lots of extra money.

If you are unsure about international shipping rates look them up. Go online and see. I can't confirm how much it will cost to ship anything, so do so at your own risk!

Just remember that those outside of the country will probably have to ship to the US if they are able to participate. It is unlikely that two DGamers from Japan or Nova Scotia will get each other randomly, for example.

I'm in. Like the idea behind this a lot. I normally wouldn't do this in any other online community but I'd probably trust my social with some of you.

Sent PM; excited for this. =)

I like Ryker's idea of writing a letter to go with it.

Even if you order stuff online, you can send a letter. Sending internationally from the US is only 1.05. Step it up.

Shipping to other countries can be a lot cheaper if you mail early (~2-ish week delivery)..paying for the faster service is what will spike the prices.

It would be really awesome if OS gave out his address to each person as the address they send their gift to.
Thought about it, followed by a "OS DGames Secret Santa MVP" and a "**** ya'll, I'm out", but the legal consequences would be pretty astounding not to mention telling everyone where I live.

I'll think about this. I have no qualms with paying extra for international shipping, however I know it's at least $20 for a package <2kg, which is essentially going to triple the cost for someone else, and I think that's a bit of a **** move.

Granted, I think this is a really cool idea though .

Get them dice
Overswarm is coming to run this town.

He records when you're sleeping.
And stalks you when you're awake.
He's projected your posting patterns.
So don't lurk for alignment's sake!

Will go long distance if extra long distance peeps are necessary. If it works out otherwise, I'd rather not. Shipping seems like it can get up to an extra $20.

I'm gonna try and commit to this but I'm really tight on money. I already explained the situation to OS before but I just want to give everyone a heads-up.

Yea. I'm kinda the same way. Christmas + getting married is pretty much a 0-death combo on money. I'm willing to shell out a bit for my Dgames bros though.

And with that, I have submitted my details.

Get at that submission folks, only a day left and I don't think OS is in the mood to hunt down people who expressed interest.
