Being free and open source (aka FOSS) makes it pretty awesome. Skype is also pretty bloaty.

What are you even on about, mate? =S People use it as a more convenient and versatile alternative to regular IRC clients, and not for voice chatting.

That's on me then I guess. In all my experiences with it, I have tried using it for voice chat with rather poor results. I had no idea that it was being used as an IRC alternative.
Goes to show you shouldn't post without knowing all the facts. :D

I'll say one thing though, I tried voice chatting online with a friend in mumble while playing and it was crazy hard to keep focused.

There's not enough link access for more things than just communications among players via smashboards or facebook on even greater scales so thread will probably be renamed (or remade since I can't figure out how to rename it) as a link database for all communications and links from youtube to twitch channels
