Cant stick proximity mines to the tip of grab-able of ledges?

When i'm in the air coming towards a stage and attempt to stick a mine (item version) on the very tip of their grab-able ledges, the mines just fall away and disappear in the bottom death boundary.

I realize this might be intended as some sort of "anti-cheap" mechanic, but i just thought it was weird.
