(Oh cool my first thread here)

So as all know, Metaknight is a punish character. Part of punishing involves taking advantage of fundamental opponent mistakes. Perhaps someone took big of a gamble and threw out a laggy move. Maybe they misspaced something. But sometimes you have to get creative and help faciltate this poor actions.

Myself personally, I am a player who enjoys baiting and mind gaming people in general. And then I got curious about how other Metaknight players bait opponents. So I'm curious as to what tactics you guys utilize.

I tend to do the following:

Dimensional Cape Autocancel - With the RCO on this move being eliminated, Cape became a much more useful movement tool. As it autocancels, it can be a potent tool for getting somoene to chase you.

Mach Tornado Autocancel- Sometimes I like to chase floatier characters in the air with this move and if I miss then I will back off. I see a lot of opponents attempting to chase me after this and get tunnel vision so the AC is useful here.

Drill Rush - If there's a platform close enough, sometimes I will use this move and crash down into the ground for that jump back. Many people will not realize what is going to happen and they will have to make the decision to do nothing or try to punish you immediately. If they chose the latter, you can often react to this scenario.

Waiting for Airdodges from Up Air Strings - This is pretty fundamental for getting more Mach Tornados but nonetheless deserves a shoutout.

Forward Smash - So many people underestimate the cooldown of this move. It's great. Sometimes I'll use another one just to see what happens. Other times I will for the Down-Tilt. If you're smart you can illicit some kind of response from the opponent if it hits their shield.

What kind of tactics do you guys use that find effective?

Playing KOF XIV
I dash towards them into shield then foxtrot away, if they threw out an attack I dash attack or dash grab.
Foxtrotting is usually my main 'take the bait' tactic, MKs dash attack has a burst speed effect and his inital dash lasts for years.

Like if you press any attack before MKs wings tuck away you can still dash grab or dash attack. Against certain characters that are super defensive I simply walk back and forth, maybe ftilt their shield and take advantage of MKs silly burst speed moves..

For me, the most common bait trick i've managed to take advantage of is when recovering from Air to Ground. Usually people try to set up something (Smash attack, Special attack) and leave themselves unable to block. And away with the cape and KO.

Tends to be the best use i've had for it so far.

Does D-air camping count as baiting? Aside from dropping down to tornado I usually mix it up with a tomahawk dash grab.

I use F-smash and Tomahawking as well. I don't know if this counts as baiting but I do dropping Tornadoes to. I need to add Auto cancelling dimensional cape though.

Mind explaining these terms to me? Tomahawking and the Auto Cancelling dimensional cape?

Couldn't agree with you more on the F-Smash bating part, I recommend for you other MK mains to try it out sometime if you aren't already. I've come to find out that it's really good for baiting out counters and can usually net you a grounded shuttle loop for the KO if spaced correctly.

@ Kyzael Kyzael , Tomahawking is basically an empty jump baiting your opponent into thinking you're going to attack, thus resulting in them in popping out their shield to which you can follow up on by grabbing them. I'm not too sure on auto canceling dimensional cape as I've yet to see it, but I believe it's when you dimensional cape and buffer something such as an F-Tilt out of it if your opponent chases you to punish you.

A dimensional cape auto-cancel is a technique in which Meta Knight uses dimensional cape to teleport to a certain height and then falls to the ground just before entering his helpless state, resulting in no landing lag. You can find out more on the beginners guide/data thread.
