I must say, B-sticking (AKA Wavebouncing) seems to be quite effective with gunner. Most of his special moves gain huge momentum reversals when B-sticking is used. It has a great effect on flame pillars and bombs, and can be used to really push him back and keep him safe all while applying projectile pressure on opponents.
He's probably a better B-stick character than Lucas was in Brawl, and he was the one most notorious for using it.
I advise you to set your C-stick to specials at least once to try it out, mostly for flame pillars and bombs. I feel like there's a lot of keepaway potential to be had here.
