I'm not sure if this has already been found but my brother and I found a glitch where you can have controller inputs functioning for player 1 and 3, and 2 and 4 at the same time resulting in the player controlling 2 characters at once ice climbers style.
We did this by putting controllers in ports 3 and/or 4. Then we go to any event or coop event. The game now reads your controller as player 1 and 2 instead of 3 or 4. Now end the event by losing or whatever. Back out of the single player section and go to versus (If you back out to title screen it resets the glitch so don't mash B too hard). In versus, controller on port 3 should now be controlling both players 1 and 3 and controller on port 4 will be controlling players 2 and 4.
This is actually a really fun glitch and i recommend getting a friend and doing some team battle controlling 2 characters at once.
