This actually came up in my head when a certain QQQQQQQ7777777 said the Following:
And the boardgame mode, and the Kid Icarus esque betting game thing and all the other stuff in the trailer. Now it didn't specifically say it was 3DS specific, but considering the only version shown in the trailer was the 3DS version.
So I've taken the liberty of bundling those together and seeing how it would work with Classic Mode.
Let's Begin.
STARTING UP:
Choose a Character, Stock, Difficulty, yadda yadda, onto the real fun.
Then, "the KI-Esque Betting Game thing" shows up.
This is where you can bet Hearts/Smash Coins/Whatever on how easier or more difficult you want your already set difficulty to be--higher risk, higher reward--, so you can have a 0.0 Easy, the Wimps way, or a 9.0 Intense, THE MANN'S WAY, or a 0.0 Intense, 5.0 Medium, 2.5 Hard, ect., ect..
Then, the player enters a Mario Party-esque Board.
Alright, time to make your way to Master Hand, choosing the paths you want to take and fighting anyone with your way. with games like Board the Platforms, Break the Targets, Snag the Trophies and even Home Run Contest. More Characters you unlock, more paths you can take. Heck, they could even take a page from Mario Sports Mix and add secret routes that lead to Alt. Costumes, certain New Challengers (like you could find Sonic on a Hidden Path, beat him n' unlock him.), and even some Customization Parts for the Character you're playing as, like Scalding F.L.U.D.D. and Super Lightweight Shoes for Mario, but the higher difficulty you play on, the better/more Powerful the items will be.
Winning, and Losing.
If you got to good old Master Hand in one piece, you can then duke it out with him (And maybe Crazy Hand, if you're good) to claim your prizes, beat Classic Mode, and you get what you came for, with a few bonuses here and there. (NOTE: You probably have to beat Master Hand in order to claim your Characters/Alt. Costumes, it's only fair.)
LOSE ALL YOUR STOCK, HOWEVER...
Half of your Collected Items will be lost. Characters and Alt. Costumes will always stay--unless you choose not to countinue--, but Trophies, Stickers, and even those precious Custom Parts might leave you at any time if you lose all your stock. You can choose to get up, but it will cost you some Hearts/Smash Coins/Whatever, and it will decrease the difficulty a bit, like from 9.0 to 8.0, which means the rewards you managed to hold onto will be better then the other things you obtain further on in.
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU BEAT CLASSIC MODE!
Here you get to do the good ol' SSBB shooter Minigame, where you shoot the Characters, Items, Assist Trophys, Trophy's, ect. to get even more money back (because you probably got alot from Classic Mode itself), then claim your Character's Precious Trophy. Now unlock some more Characters, jump back in there n' get the tools to make your Character do a 0% Damage Run of 9.0 Intense Classic Mode.
Have fun~

It's a good idea (and one I had as well) but they can't call it classic mode then since it, well, differs so heavily from the classic mode.

I want this but I know I will be dissapointed because it probaly wont happen but on the other hand it does seem possible.

I hope it's true because it sounds waay more fun and simple to unlock characters instead of doing a 1000 matches or beating everyones target test IMO. However when I first saw this I had this mind, an adventure mode:

Adventure Mode:
Step 1: Choose a character,stock and level.
Step 2:Do the coin betting thing excactly what you said
Step 3: You enter a mario party like map with different paths. Here's where its getting crazy.
Depending on the path you choose, you get a sidescrolling stage like the subspace emmisary, but this time the maps are based on that franchise, or even a level from that franchise remade. The items you see in that stage are from that franchise only. At the end you get a boss battle also from that franchise.
We'll take Mega Man for example. You go trough Dr Wily's castle with megaman enemies and at the end you fight Mecha Dragon, since in Mega Man 2 the boss in Wily Castle was the Mecha Dragon.

Not all franchises have these, and some franchises have multipile of these.
The franchises that don't have these will have a different way of unlocking them, honestly IDK.

Step 4:There's only one path like that everytime you play.(That path is the path at the end) and it's always a random one. The other paths go to 1v1 battles, Home Run Contest, race to the finish etc.

Step 5: After playing that special path, you either unlock that character or one of the characters from that franchise, or if already played coins and smash run upgrades or some trophies.

(It will never happen, but yea that was my idea.)

I'm hoping this is a new mode along the lines of what you two said. Honestly it sounds like it's a great idea and I'd LOVE an adventure mode. Based on the footage I'd say you guys have the right ideas in mind. I saw the logos of Star Fox, Pokemon, and Mega Man on the map part. I think Zelda, Stage Three and the Defeat a Single Opponent things all add to your points being made highly plausible. I highly doubt it's some kind of new spin on Classic Mode, but it's definitely new and it looks highly interesting. Anyone else notice Mario's animation change with the difficulty? I'm betting everyone does that to. I really hope this new mode ends up as interesting and fun as it looks to be. Don't know why we haven't heard of it before.......

Wait.
Just recently.
Sakurai posted about a new mode called Trophy Rush.

A long time ago, in a galax- Why am I quoting Star Wars? Anyway, a while ago Sakurai actually foreshadowed Smash Run with the extremely vague caption "Where am I?" plus the photo of Mario standing in the forested area of Smash Run on Miiverse.

I bring this up because Sakurai said he'd keep the details of Trophy Rush secret for now. We might just now be getting a look at some gameplay of it. And nobody judge based on title, because if Smash Run was judged based on it's title, we'd have gotten a boring on-foot racing minigame with no depth or special attributes at all. (in other words, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING)

Maybe what we saw with Pikachu was only a glimpse of one of the substages? Our Pika-pal looked like he was going for the High-Score.

First Bold Quote Response:

...that sounds horrible for someone who spends most of their time collecting stuff. If Nintendo does that I can expect tons of people rage quitting.

Second Bold Quote Response:

The reward better be worth it. You don't expect people to do something on the scale of Battle Toads' difficulty and get nothing do you?

Do not get me wrong, this idea is beyond fantastic and I love it. The problem is that I don't want it to be Classic Mode because it isn't classic(Thus the name Classic Mode). But an alternative game mode? Hell yes.

I kind of like the idea of unlocking alternate costumes by beating Classic/Whatever Mode with whatever character you want to get alt costumes for.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure we're really gonna get a lot of Alternate Costumes.....At least, not enough to need to unlock any for any purpose besides having something as an unlockable.
For some reason I remember reading at tons of places that there will be 12 alts for each character.

Props for the correct (or close enough - admittedly, we haven't seen everything yet) guess! :p I'm really hyped for this mode, to be honest.

While this looks really fun I still really hope at the very least there is an actual classic mode on the Wii U version it just wouldn't be the same without it.

I do wonder how the alternate paths will work though. Maybe some routes will actually require you to increase the difficulty to take.

I don't want to be that guy, but I thought it was pretty obvious this was how it was going to play out ever since the Direct where they flat out showed these things.

That said, I always loved the idea since they showed it, but I agree with some others that it doesn't really feel "classic" so much as its own mode, but I'm super pumped about this.
