This is a stage from the Pikmin series, and it's pretty elaborate. Here it goes:

The Brawl starts out above ground in a scenic setting from one of the areas of Pikmin 2, the Awakening Wood. Potted flowers could be used as platforms and small ponds could work similar to the water in The Summit or Delfino Plaza. Stage hazards include enemies like Fiery Blowhogs that would walk in and attempt to burn players. Pellet Posies could grow over time, and when fully grown the pellets could be knocked down and eaten for health (the numbers, being rarer as they increase, would be 1, 5, 10 and 20 like in the games and heal that same amount).

Then, after sixty seconds or so, a hole will appear in the ground. This is a cave entrance hole. The screen will start to scroll downwards, so everyone must try to get into the hole. Once they do, they sort of disappear for a few seconds until the stage finishes scrolling downwards to the cave's first sublevel. If a player fails to reach the hole in time, they fall off the top of the screen and die.

Then everyone will drop down into the new setting: a dark underground cavern. Here, there are new stage hazards and even new music to fit the tone. Enemies could include Mamutas that would pound players into the ground like the Pitfall item. Honeywisps could glide in and out of view, supplying players with Food from their egg sacs like the Shy Guys on Yoshi's Island. And possibly even a Gatling Groink, which is invulnerable from the front and shoots explosives. Every now and then another hole would appear and force the players to go deeper underground. This could continue for two or three sublevels until...

The final level. Here players would encounter Empress Bulbax. She would constantly roll from side to side, squashing players (again, leaving them stuck in the ground like the Pitfall). Players would have to avoid her the whole time. Finally, a geyser would show up, and everyone would have to reach it before the stage scrolls rapidly upwards back to the above-ground setting. Rinse and repeat.

I could see this working as a Subspace level, with the Empress as the boss at the end. I've never played Pikmin, but it sounds pretty interesting

Hmmm...This could be a great stage for the Subspace Emissary. Maybe each level of the cave could be very long and have the hole at the end. Maybe even have more that jut two levels as well.

Oh another idea. For whatever stage they do have, they could have Pellet Posies on the surface that grow over time. Then, after they bloom, the pellets can be knocked down and eaten for health.
