Real Men Use Items: Sakurai Explains the Friends List on Brawl

Today Sakurai explained a feature we were already aware of, but for some reason he felt the manual we would eventually get with our game wasn’t enough. Of course Sakurai is not without his unique sense of humor.

<p align="center">This is the layout of your friend’s list. You’re name, friend code and other info at the top and a list of available players online.</p>

<p align="center">Putting your friend code in is as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4… well, it doesn’t take long to say the least.</p>

Everyone out there in real life has a comment for everything and this is no exception in Brawl. You have four comments you can use while in battle that you can customize before going on to WiFi.

<p align="center">After this point, it should be pretty simple to go in WiFi and find yourself a match.</p>

You can see those who are online and avilable for play. The small colored circle on the right of each friend indicates connection strength. Sakurai said blue was the strongest, but was more specific about what the other ones entailed. I am assuming it’s much like battery power or other games with similar connection colors: Red: Crappy; Orange: Manageable; Yellow: Average; Green: Good; Blue: Excellent. Of course, this is purely speculation, but it pretty much fits what most games do.

You can check the status of who is hosting a game. I’m assuming by the status, “Seeking Brawl” means that person is hosting, while those with “Brawling” are in the midst of a game and “Online” means they have no yet made a decision on whether to host or join and have just connected.

Either way, it was just interesting the see teh whole thing worked....

Ugh.... awesome Dec 3rd update Sakurai. I'm sorry i appreciate everything but this is getting ridiculous. I don't need to know this kind of stuff until the day it comes out.

I never hated friend codes so i like this update
but im geusing where getting alot of pissed of comments

Lol, this update epic wins just for the sh*tstorm it caused here.

That image of the sweating Dylan-Goku with the Nate comments flying everywhere was probably the funniest thing I've seen in a few days.

It's starting to seem like a better thing every day that I stopped anticipating updates so I can actively debate as soon as they're up.

Anyway.

We got ourselves a new meme.
In fact, when I read that "Real men use items!" line, I was totally flabbergasted because I thought I already heard it on the forums? Then again, I probably confused it with "Real men use Peach."

Lol, you think Sakurai and Nate play each other on WiFi?

I can see it now... Nate will do another press interview for Brawl, showcasing the online mode. He'll go into his friends list, and "Skrai" will be online, hosting a room for 2. They'll start a match, and Sakurai will taunt, with the comment, "Hello America! Do you like my game?". Then, as they fight, he'll knock Nate off the stage, and Sakurai will do another taunt, saying, "You must recover!". Finally, Sakurai will win with a Final Smash, and just before he uses it, he will taunt a third and fourth time, saying "You have no time to ponder" and "For I have just grabbed a Smash Ball!", and he'll unleash it.

Oh yes, it shall be glorious...

Hohoho. Man, this update was just a depressing reminder that I'll have a lot of 12 digit numbers to enter when the game comes out. Ah well. I'll just be happy there is online.

Even though I'd be upset, I would've lolled quite a bit if that were the case. It would've been genius.

I find it hilarious that anyone expected some sort of apology update. We're not the most important region in the world and we're not the only one that gets updates. I'm staying off GFaqs except to see if it is as bad as I think it is right now.

That being said, Meh, it was okay. We did get to see Mario's Pwnage Taunt as well as Peach's taunt that was so much fun to spam when you were winning. There was also some humor in the update too.

I actually did see this update as a sort of apology update...

"Look, I know we delayed the game, but come on, now you have a functional online mode and stuff! Would you prefer a rushed game without a functional online mode? I wouldn't prefer a rushed game without a functional online mode."

Wow, this sucks.
I mean, it isn't like Smash Bros. Brawl is the FIRST system to use this method of getting online. To me (and maybe a few others), this update is says one thing "this is how you get online". Which is a horrid topic nonetheless. Great, I was setting myself up for something huge!

This was... disappointing, to say the least.

Depressing up date... i was so eager to look on there today, just to see that.

Jeeze i've never been so wrong on what i expected from a update.

The only thing i can think of is maybe he wants to wait till 2maro for a big update.. I mean since the 3rd is the shipping date and we wouldn't have been able to get brawl till the 4th.

I was about to get up at 3 in the morning for this pile of crap update.

Just shoot me now... Tomorrow we get "the importance of lives"
