A Custom Experience in Brawl Controls

In an interesting update to start out the week, Sakurai describes how the customizable controls we’d heard about in the <a href="http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamemode/various/various02.html">“Names”</a> update work.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/various14_071126b.jpg" alt="The Four Control Types" /></p>

The first thing to do is pick your name. All custom control settings are saved under then name, and each name can save a setting for each of the four different control schemes.

Once you begin customizing, you simply select whichever button you want to edit, and select the command you want it to do.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/various14_071126c-l.jpg" alt="Editing the GameCube controls" /></p>
A few other features were also revealed in this update. The first of which is the <em>Tap Jump</em>. This handy little feature toggles whether or not your character will jump when the control stick is pushed upward. This feature will please those who always found attacking upwards with Strong Attacks was a inconvenience (myself included).

Our other move was the <em>Shake Smash</em>. Exclusive to the Wii Remote + Nunchuk setup, this move allows a quick Smash Attack to be performed in the direction you shake the controller. Like the Tap Jump, this can be toggled on and off.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/various14_071126f-l.jpg" alt="Tap Jump and Shake Smash" /></p>
Once you’ve customized to your heart’s content, you can test your new setup in a simple training zone before saving.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/various14_071126g-l.jpg" alt="The Training Zone" /></p>
Your customized setups can also be saved and taken with you wherever you go, courtesy of the Wii Remote’s internal memory. Simply press the + Button on the names list to open the menu, and once there, old 1 + 2 to save your name to your Wii Remote.
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/various14_071126i-l.jpg" alt="Transferring" /></p>
The name stores your preferred control settings with it, so simply transfer the name back to any other Wii Console and get to Smashing with your favourite settings.

EDIT: Eagle-eyed poster Chi's Finest has noted that in a previous screenshot from the "Tourney" update, there is an option to pull a name from the Wii Remote at the name entry screen:

whoever says: "this update stinks! lets yell randomly!" deserves a pwning.
because we now know that controller configs have been set to attatch to controllers...or whatever its called. all i know is its good for tournaments.
i know theres a subtle clue in there somewhere...but where...

Wow. I hate to say it, but we really have thought of everything.
there we go. Begin the speculation!

also......6th post....dang

Somewhere, most likely existent
I wonder what else will be saved to the names? Also, random idea: I wonder if you can choose what character you play as in the "Test" thing. Same for Wi-Fi's smack Sandbag while looking for people thing.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Shake Smash is incorporated into the game.
It's a pretty important feature if you use it: If they make it too touchy, then your character might just smash attack out of the blue, and there'd be a lot of frustration and people screaming, "That was SO unfair!! I deserved to win!" If they make the Shake Smash hard to set off, then people will have a hard time launching the attack. And finally, if the attack is too vague, then people might do a d-smash instead of an f-smash.
It's a good idea, but they have to pull it off right.

I told someone today a good joke is to when your friend gets up to leave when playing this (lucky if the friend is gone long enough), change the control scheme to something really strange.

So, you can save your name and all the data that falls under it onto your wiimote?
Or does this just work for your personalized control scheme?
Anyone?

i might change the c stick to somthing els, because Gimpy fish said that with bowsers fire u can controll it using the c botton whether u want to aim it up or down and that would seem hard 2 do on a gamecube controller i might make it y. i think the general idea of it is amazaing but i prob wont change nything or much

IMPORTANT !!!!!!!!!!

EXCUSE ME

sakurai did NOT think of EVERYTHING!!

notice the nunchuck wiimote combo---there is no application of the - and + buttons! why not!?

B would function much better as the jump button and let the - button be for special moves. it would feel similar to the motion one makes from the A to B buttons on the gamecube controller ; just slide ur thumb down. and then the B trigger could act as jump instead of the UP directional which is quite difficult to reach.

anybody else see what i mean?

ummmm i do agree with your idea of B for jump, but it seems you overlooked jumping on the C button on the nunchuck. So really the default layout isn't all that bad

This is MAJOR to the pro scene, so many pros will be using that.

And you cannot say that this update sucked, if so, you suck.

Finally, we can make our controls around our styles instead of the other way around. Out with the barely used, in with the awkward mega combo.

...Everything, you say? Close. But not truly everything, Good Sir, until I see a penguin dressed like Henry the 8th.

...Hm...They even threw in a hammer...

For the same reason that the Start button on the GC pad isn't mappable. By default, there needs to be a pause/menu button, and this is always +/- on the Wiimote.

Well, since I haven't really had a problem with Tap Jump, I'll probably leave that on, it'd be too awkward without it, and I can't wait to see how that new Shake Smash system, or, anyway, the Combo setup period (it seems to be the only suitable one besides the GC controller and arguably the Classic the controller, at least it seems to be), but I think I'll still use the GC setup.

Thanks for the Tap Jump turn-off. Now we can do up tilts faster.

I also like how the C-stick says "Smash". Is it safe to say the camera control is gone from First player modes?

This is great for people who want to try different configurations. Personally, I'm just going to play with the same GC controls that I use in Melee.

However, there's no doubt in my mind that I'm turning "tap jump" off.

I think this is a pretty cool update, actually. Definitely going to consider replacing the "jump" function on the "X" button for... something. This is going to be fun~~~

The real control config option that they need to implement is the ability to switch the positions of the D-pad and the left analog stick on the Classic Controller.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed with this. I was hoping we'd be able to map really specific actions to buttons, like binding X to dair or something (I have trouble reaching the C stick sometimes), but it looks like you can only make assignments in terms of what the buttons already do, like making X behave like A or something. It doesn't seem to useful to me, since there's not much I can think would improve the GCN control scheme anyway (though it might help with some of the other controllers, I guess).

What I'm REALLY hoping for is the option to change the C-stick from smashes to tilts, but I don't really see that happening anymore from the looks of things. Oh well...at least we'll be able to turn tap-to-jump off. Accidently jumping before a Spin Attack causes at LEAST one death every two games for my poor Link. Come to think of it, that will probably help with up-tilts too. Forward-tilts were always the worst for me, though...
