Today’s a semi-double update with The main focus on Target Test, but with a second, almost off hand announcment that I know is going to make many a Smasher cheer, as Smash can now be recorded! Read on for more!

It’s another Stadium update, with Break the Targets making a welcome return, with a fair few changes to tradition. Most obvious is the recolouring of the Targets, but the fact that the Target stages have been reduced in number. Rather than each character having it’s own stage, there’s now a total of 5 stages of varying dificulty.

Items also make an appearence in BTT, wether they’re pre-planned items, or random spawns aren’t known, though I can imagine people are hoping they’re planned. Spent ages working out how to get the quickest time posible, then have someone break your record by having Unown or Beedril fly across the stage and kill em all? Annoying.

Oh, and the other change is that these all take place outside. You know, outside? The area outside that glass thing? Yeah.

Recorded Replays

Yes, you heard right. Something many a Smasher had been hoping would be included ever since (and before) Halo 3 had it included. You can save “around 3 minutes” of footage, which can then be reviewed and sent to fellow Wiis. Wether these can be sent to PC’s is unknown though.

the time of “around 3 minutes” is most likely due to space on the Wii’s HD, but as seen below, the SD card is an option, so being able to save directly to an SD card is posible.

Still doesn’t stop us wanting some sort of HD addon, Nintendo.

While I can't help thinking that the wording was rather ambiguous and could also mean 5 stages per character, it's still a fantastic update.

Did anyone else notice the target colours reflect the difficulty level?

Hmmm, Mic I actually have a question on that. Is it only five BTT or Five per character. I though it was five per character but your idea would make more sense. Though if it is just five in total then the smash olympics is a must!

But yeah I did notic that random guy.

I'm glad Sakurai was able to get the replay function to work.

I think the main reason for the small record time is because Nintendo's network is the weakest of the 3 consoles, and they know that EVERYONE will be sending replays to everyone they know showing off how they unlocked a WTF character or how they overshot the stage in the Home-run Contest.

Edit:

Wow, nice find! Personally I thought the grassy one with the water was a throw back to green hill (green hills and gold "rings"). But thats makes a lot more sense.

Target test returns albeit with modifications. Different difficulties and better aesthetics are a plus. However I can hear the moans as it seems that the stages aren't unique to each character and the fact that the items are there. I'll admit I'm dissapointed that the stages aren't unique to each character, but I don't think it ruins the mode that much. Finally the items. If you want to make this a test of your skill, don't use them. Simple as that. No biggie.

Now for Board the platforms to return in all it's glory!

if you look at the placement of the targets, they aren't in very Character Specific places. They seem to be accessable to all characters. This leads me to believe there is a total of 5 levels in the entire game. Not 125+ levels like some people think will happen.

I so wish you could have a "Break The Target Level Editor" I would make some cool levels.

Woh, I just realized something! One of the crates has a flammable symbol on it, the one in Samus's picture. Dose this mean we will know when something is going to explode? and if so, dose that mean we can turn them off?

^ Yep. Flame=Explosion.

No one knows if we can turn them off in Target Test, in multiplayer you probably can.

whoa another 1P mode update mode today. Wait a second Sandbag/Homerun contest was revealed last wednesday right?

I'm glad he's letting us know about single player mode now.

Break the Targets look good too, with 5 different difficultiues. It was kind of sad there being only one set of Break the Targets for each character. Got very old and boring.

As for replays. I hope there's a button you press or you activate it in the pause mode. Because how would you know say in a stock match when would be the perfect time to record. For all you know a fluke could come after you hit 0:00.

Anyway Replays are great. I loved them in F-zero GX, and I hope they're just as good here. It be great too if you could make your own videos from Smash Bros. and sent them around on the net to youtube... or ...... Smash Tube. Like someone said. lol

I swear i'm going to need like 10 SD cards once i'm done with this game. And that's just for the photos, and replays. Who knows what it'll be when it comes time for Stickers, trophies and even Game space and such.

I might have to get rid of every other game on my Wii Memory. Could it be worth it though.

Sakurai now has too much writing on this game, he'd better not stuff it up.

But a much better update today. And i'm glad to see Break the Targets return, gives me hope for event matches. And replays should be good too.

But for some reason I reckon most of the replays will overflow with Mario vs Sonic moments.

Man, I can already see the practical applications of having items in the Target Test.

That Crate in the middle left is a sliding crate. From Meta Knights position, you can easily drop down and kick the sliding crate into the Target, leaving you free to drop down and take the two below it.

This should open up some very interesting strategies. (I am of course assuming the items are preset, but it's a reasonable assumption.

Quick question, I don't know if this has any value or can be confirmed, but has anyone noticed that the 10th of the month seems important? Notably, Sonic's announcement and Brawl's release date?

I wonder if we can use this to predict large and important updates in the next few months.

...Hey, I just noticed something in MetaKnight's screenshot. To my knowledge, this is the first time the game is shown being played with Gamecube controls.

I believe you are correct!
Nice Find! :chuckle:

I'm pretty happy that we can now record games. 3 minutes doesn't seem like a lot, but i'm sure the smash community will find a way to make do. :)

I believe he was probably talking about in-game, not just around the Menu.

All-in-All though, neat update. The 5 stage thing may be a drag, but oh well. We'll get over it, right?

...right?

The screenshot I posted was in-game...

And I agree. It doesn't really matter if it's 5 stages or more. As someone else pointed out: We still have to do those 5 stages with all the characters, so it's still a lot of Target Breaking.

Sakurai always plays the cube controller.

Anyway, cool update, I like how different difficulty makes the targets bigger or smaller and a matching colour. Although the intense targets don't seem like they will be that much smaller if you look at the ones currently shown. And they are red as well. So intense=red targets= old size?

I quite liked this update, I personally enjoy the fact that the scenery to break the targets is outdoors...I LOVE IT!!!

Anyway, imo I think the 5 levels things is for each character, it seriously doubt there will be 5 stages alone.

Finally, with the recording thing, i think it is exactly like it has been said in a couple of posts around the forums, you play the stage and then after you may review your footage and choose which segment you wish to save.

I don't care as much about BTT as I do the new replay option! I wonder how it will work. I sure hope that you can save more footage on an SD card, as that would give me a good excuse to buy one. X) Anyway, my idea on how it will work is that after the match ends, you can review the replay. Then you could choose the point that you wish to record. To me, that would make the most sense instead of pausing in game and pressing the button. I also think it would be cool if they did something like Halo 3 did, where once you take a replay you can go back and rotate the camera, and do lots of weird stuff to it. That would rock.

I'm going to piss glass if you can upload the videos to PC.

As for the targets, I've always loved Break The Targets so, I'm looking forward to Board The Platforms.

Hey look, that one guy's name is "Nookway"!
ZOMG TOM IN BRAWL CONFIRMED :p

But seriously, I like this. Weird that there's only 5 stages altogether. Also wierd that we have items now. I wonder how this will play out? Unlock a character by beating a certain stage in a certain amount of time? Or Unlock a character by beating a certain stage with every character?

Pretty cool update. I like the fact that Break the Targets is returning (though I had no doubt it would be) and there's more than one stage! Hopefully for different characters.

What I'm most overjoyed about in this update is the video! A great feature I've been waiting for, even though it's only 3 minutes it looks like we can use an SD card.

Yeah the targets are colored according to difficulty... then why on earth is meta knight doing only normal? lol aside from personal character opinion this update is great, especially with the replays. Makes you wonder if you will be able to record actual matches, hmm? and what happens when you record a BTT with an unlockable character and send it to a friend that doesnt have that character? :laugh:pacman ftw?

I'm friggin' excited. Just the other day in Melee, I knee'd somebody out of my partner fully-charged Samus blast in teams, but I wasn't recording. Now, if something amazing happens, I can save it and record it later. 3 minutes isn't always enough to record a full match.

Reading the update has me wondering does it literally mean there is only 5 different BTT in the whole game, or does it mean 5 different levels per character?

Can't really take anything literally because people thought that 'but only once' for the Smash Ball update and thought it ony meant once per a match.

Pretty awesome update, and we can record 3 minute videos? Wonder if we can record multiple 3 minute videos.
