He also helped introduce the west to Fire Emblem in the first place via Smash, so I can't help but feel Roy is somewhat important at least in the context of Smash and it's history.

In regards to Roy being a very similar case to Corrin(both blatant marketing characters for the latest Fire Emblem game) Roy's addition took very little time, and was more of an extra akin to the clones of Sm4sh...you also didn't have to pay extra for him.

Corrin, whilst cool(and he is cool; chainsword and dragon transformation? Rather nice moveset admittedly) was a character nearly no-one was requesting during a period that was promised to be pure fan service with many holding their breath for characters they have wanted for many a year.
Roy, whilst seemingly a peculiar choice, was highly requested in Japan(2nd after Mewtwo at one point even).
Heck; he's Japan's favourite Lord overall as voted in a recent poll and was the lord of the game that first saved FE as a series in Japan during a declining interest in the series. The second lull being just before Awakening.
