Honestly, I think 4th party rep should be limited to Goku and Shrek - a package deal, if you can't get one, don't get the other, and no more after that - I feel that'd make the most sense as a "once-unrealistic dream comes true" scenario and appeal to two different audiences well.

I'm opposed to James Bond because I'm opposed to non-SoT Rare content in general. Even if he isn't Microsoft property and therefore not taking away a proper Microsoft rep's chance, and Goldeneye is probably the only non-monkey-based Rare game I'd call legitimately important to gaming as a whole and not just Nintendo, let's not base a ton of content on what is ultimately a random Microsoft C-team subsidary in the grand scheme of gaming history.

I’m still sticking to Popeye as my ideal fourth-party rep; I’d rather Smash not have any fourth-parties at all, but Popeye (technically) leading to the creation of Donkey Kong gives him a greater stake in gaming history than pretty much any fourth-party character out there (aside from ET, for all the wrong reasons).

Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Rare is kinda a strange case in that they absolutely were a huge deal in the grand scheme of Nintendo's history. Like they were literally the life of the party when it came to the N64 library, it's a huge factor into why the N64 lineups on the old Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles have always felt so empty, to the point where it's being addressed on NSO with the inclusion of Banjo-Kazooie and GoldenEye, with hopefully more to come.

I suppose debates like these show that Smash Bros. is in bit of a crossroads in terms of what its identity is: Nintendo history vs. Gaming history. It was originally exclusively about the former but now it's been a bit diluted since Brawl with the inclusion of characters like Snake, Cloud, Sephiroth, Kazuya, Joker, etc. I've said this before, but the Banjo & Kazooie vs. Steve wars that lasted from 2018 to mid 2019 were basically a microcosm of such debates, and if Smash actually were to start including non-VG content, arguments about James Bond (or even Popeye) vs Goku/Shrek/Spongebob/whatever would feel the same way.

Perhaps things would feel less difficult/confusing had, at the very least, Rare and Nintendo never parted ways like they did, and thus Banjo and other Rare characters wouldn't feel as "out of place" to certain folk considering they wouldn't exactly be guest fighters. But it doesn't exactly change the fact that they were a big deal in Nintendo's history.
